Book Over the Top and Back

Download or read book Over the Top and Back written by Sir Tom Jones and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2015-11-24 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The long-awaited autobiography of legendary singer Tom Jones, following six decades of unparalleled experiences in the spotlight to coincide with his 75th birthday. Across six decades, Sir Tom Jones has maintained a vital career in a risky, unstable business notorious for the short lives of its artists. With a drive that comes from nothing but the love for what he does, he breaks through and then wrestles with the vagaries of the music industry, the nature of success and its inevitable consequences. Having recorded an expansive body of work and performed with fellow artists from across the spectrum and across every popular music genre, from rock, pop and dance to country, blues and soul, the one constant throughout has been his unique musical gifts and unmistakable voice. But how did a boy from a Welsh coal-mining family attain success across the globe? And how has he survived the twists and turns of fame and fortune to not only stay exciting, but actually become more credible and interesting with age? In this, his first ever autobiography, Tom revisits his past and tells the tale of his journey from wartime Pontypridd to LA and beyond. He reveals the stories behind the ups and downs of his fascinating and remarkable life, from the early heydays to the subsequent fallow years to his later period of artistic renaissance. It's the story nobody else knows or understands, told by the man who lived it, and written the only way he knows how: simply and from the heart. Raw, honest, funny and powerful, this is a memoir like no other from one of the world's greatest ever singing talents. This is Tom Jones and Over the Top and Back is his story.

Book George Berkeley

Download or read book George Berkeley written by Tom Jones and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2021-05-04 with total page 648 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive intellectual biography of the Enlightenment philosopher In George Berkeley: A Philosophical Life, Tom Jones provides a comprehensive account of the life and work of the preeminent Irish philosopher of the Enlightenment. From his early brilliance as a student and fellow at Trinity College Dublin to his later years as Bishop of Cloyne, Berkeley brought his searching and powerful intellect to bear on the full range of eighteenth-century thought and experience. Jones brings vividly to life the complexities and contradictions of Berkeley’s life and ideas. He advanced a radical immaterialism, holding that the only reality was minds, their thoughts, and their perceptions, without any physical substance underlying them. But he put forward this counterintuitive philosophy in support of the existence and ultimate sovereignty of God. Berkeley was an energetic social reformer, deeply interested in educational and economic improvement, including for the indigenous peoples of North America, yet he believed strongly in obedience to hierarchy and defended slavery. And although he spent much of his life in Ireland, he followed his time at Trinity with years of travel that took him to London, Italy, and New England, where he spent two years trying to establish a university for Bermuda, before returning to Ireland to take up an Anglican bishopric in a predominantly Catholic country. Jones draws on the full range of Berkeley’s writings, from philosophical treatises to personal letters and journals, to probe the deep connections between his life and work. The result is a richly detailed and rounded portrait of a major Enlightenment thinker and the world in which he lived.

In ten new stories, Jones introduces us to hard-luck fighters steeling themselves for battles they've already lost, doctors who fall in love with their illnesses, and a strung-out advertising writer who uses the hand of the devil to do the work of God. At the end of the day, the only ones still standing have gone head-to-head with the world's brutality--and remain ready, hopelessly potent yet irreversibly doomed, to battle all over again. Thom Jones has a wicked appetite for existential calamity and unflagging humor in its presence; his writing is mesmerizing, sometimes fevered, and impossible to put down. Cold Snap resoundingly confirms what thousands already know: Thom Jones is here to stay.

Book excerpt: Stockton, California experienced a high-voltage jolt of enthusiasm during the 1960s when a young basketball coach named Dick Edwards brought a city together. Hired by the University of the Pacific to coach its team, Edwards had an ability to go "outside the campus gates" and capture the support of the city of Stockton and the outlying community. He built a rabid fan base that became honorary Pacific alumni and they all turned an old opera house in downtown Stockton into a "capitol" of basketball. The enthusiasm of the city helped Edwards develop a nationally-ranked program that the University of the Pacific, the city of Stockton, the county of San Joaquin, and the core of California's great Central Valley would grow to give unconditional support and interest. Read how a fiery coach and a small group of dedicated assistants used a hardscrabble approach with a bunch of driven athletes to make Stockton and the University of the Pacific shine.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Elizabeth Taylor and Tom Jones: The Spring Ranche Incident takes place in Nebraska in the 1880's at a time when the Oregon Trail was the main freeway to Oregon and California. It guided the travelers in their quest for gold, land, and religious asylum. Nearly a half million immigrants of various nationalities traversed along the trail and suffered from many hardships, diseases, thievery, and violence to reach their goals. A fair number never made it. However, traveling to the west coast was never the intention of thousands who disembarked from the trail. Many followed their dreams that would take them off the trail hundreds or thousands of miles from Oregon and California. These were the pioneers who would become the farmers of the most fertile lands on earth. Their descendents, over the decades to come, would later be responsible for feeding the world. Amid the disappearing desolation of the central plains in the 1880's, life for the new residents was placid and one dominated by hard work. But in a small corner of Clay County, Nebraska, an emotional pot was brewing and about to boil over horribly. Armed with nothing but their dreams aspirations, and the grubstakes of the family, a pair of twins, a brother and sister, migrated to the U.S. from Wales and eventually to Missouri. From there, they took their vision of prosperity to the virgin lands of an area once known as the Spring Ranche Precinct, Clay County, Nebraska, which was originally settled in 1864. They arrived in Spring Ranche in 1870 and availed themselves of the Homestead Act of 1862. Land, at the time, could be purchased from Uncle Sam for $1.25 an acre. They laid claim to the maximum anount of land allowed by law. Elizabeth Taylor, who married a fellow Welshman, James Taylor, at the early age of 15 in 1869, was a woman ahead of her time. With the limited skills of farming and ranching that she had learned from her father, and with the help of her beloved twin, Tom Jones, her dream of becoming a successful rancher came to fruition. In a time when women were not much more tha unpaid servents, her path to success was understandably difficult. With her brother's help, she was able to cast aside the unspoken societal roadblocks that had always been set before a female and those that rose before her purposely. She was a woman who did everything within her driving nature to sidestep these barriers in reaching her goals. But during those times, which may seem unfathomable to our younger generations of men and women, Elizabeth Taylor and Tom Jones were not welcome to pursue their dreams and goals simply because of their strong wills, work ethics, and because of Elizabeth's sex. The means and underhanded actions that were directed at the twins by their neighbors to thwart their efforts were questionable and at best, unfair, unlawful, and brutally horrific.
