Book Agenda Setting in a 2 0 World

Download or read book Agenda Setting in a 2 0 World written by Thomas J. Johnson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-07-24 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume explores agenda-setting theory in light of changes in the media environment in the 21st century. In the decades since the original Chapel Hill study that launched agenda-setting research, the theory has attracted the interest of scholars worldwide. Agenda Setting in a 2.0 World features the work of a new generation of scholars. The research provided by these young scholars reflects two broad contemporary trends in agenda-setting: A centrifugal trend of research in the expanding media landscape and in domains beyond the original focus on public affairs, and a centripetal trend further explicating agenda-setting’s core concepts.

Book International Media Communication in a Global Age

Download or read book International Media Communication in a Global Age written by Guy Golan and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2009-09-10 with total page 523 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume provides a comprehensive examination of key issues regarding global communication, focusing particularly on international news and strategic communication. It addresses those news factors that influence the newsworthiness of international events, providing a synthesis of both theoretical and practical studies that highlight the complicated nature of the international news selection process. It also deals with international news coverage, presenting research on the cross-national and cross-cultural nature of media coverage of global events, in the interdisciplinary context of research on political communication, war coverage, new technologies and online communication. The work concludes with a focus on global strategic communications: in the age of globalization, global economies and cross-national media ownership, chapters here provide readers with some of the most up-to-date research on international advertising, public relations and other key issues in international communications. With contributions from many of the leading scholars in the field of international media communication research, this collection presents a valuable resource for advancing knowledge and understanding of the complicated international communication phenomenon. It will be of value to upper-level undergraduates and graduate students in mass media and communication programs, and to scholars whose research focuses on global communication research.

Book To the Limit

Download or read book To the Limit written by Tom A. Johnson and published by Potomac Books, Inc.. This book was released on 2006 with total page 611 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Helicopter pilots in Vietnam kidded one another about being nothing but glorified bus drivers. But these "rotor heads" saved thousands of American lives while performing what the Army classified as the most dangerous job it had to offer. One in eighteen did not return home. Tom A. Johnson flew the UH-1 "Iroquois" -- better known as the "Huey" -- in the 229th Assault Helicopter Battalion of the First Air Cavalry Division. From June 1967 through June 1968, he accumulated an astonishing 1,600 flying hours (1,150 combat and 450 noncombat). His battalion was one of the most highly decorated units in the Vietnam War and, as part of the famous First Air Cavalry Division, helped redefine modern warfare. With tremendous flying skill, Johnson survived rescue missions and key battles that included those for Hue and Khe Sanh and operations in the A Shau and Song Re valleys, while many of his comrades did not. His heartfelt and riveting memoir will strike a chord with any soldier who ever flew in the ubiquitous Huey and any reader with an interest in how the Vietnam War was really fought.

Book Tom Johnson of Cleveland

Download or read book Tom Johnson of Cleveland written by Eugene Converse Murdock and published by University Press of America. This book was released on 1994 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A full-scale biography of Tom Johnson, the most famous municipal executive of the Progressive era. As mayor of Cleveland from 1901 to 1909, he made it the best governed city in the United States according to Lincoln Steffens. In that office, he became an outstanding social and structural reformer in the Progressive mold. Yet he does not easily fit into the ideological pigeon-holes created by Progressive historians. He was, argues the author, a true disciple of Henry George, the nineteenth century social philosopher, and George's single tax theories. The author views Johnson in the light of Progressive historiography, demonstrating that he is probably the outstanding example of a Progressive who does not meet the 'status' explanation of the origin of Progressivism.

Download or read book Law in Common written by Tom Johnson and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2019-12-12 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There were tens of thousands of different local law-courts in late-medieval England, providing the most common forums for the working out of disputes and the making of decisions about local governance. While historians have long studied these institutions, there have been very few attempts to understand this complex institutional form of 'legal pluralism'. Law in Common provides a way of understanding this complexity by drawing out broader patterns of legal engagement. Tom Johnson first explores four 'local legal cultures' - in the countryside, in forests, in towns and cities, and in the maritime world- that grew up around legal institutions, landscapes, and forms of socio-economic practice in these places, and produced distinctive senses of law. Johnson then turns to examine 'common legalities', widespread forms of social practice that emerge across these different localities, through which people aimed to invoke the power of law. Through studies of the physical landscape, the production of legitimate knowledge, the emergence of English as a legal vernacular, and the proliferation of legal documents, the volume offers a new way to understand how common people engaged with law in the course of their everyday lives. Drawing on a huge body of archival research from the plenitude of different local institutions, Law in Common offers a new social history of law that aims to explain how common people negotiated the transformational changes of the long fifteenth century with, and through legality.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Death is no longer a mystery. The magic of eternity has been found. I often hear people wondering if life carries on after death. It always makes me smile. That’s exactly what happens. And I used to think no one would discover the truth while they were alive. I was wrong. A sixteen-year-old boy just did. His name is Jonathan Powers and this is his story. Jonathan’s from a planet called Centurian, but that’s not where his story begins. It begins on Earth with the tragic death of a boy from London, Jonathan Prior. Jonathan Prior’s soul travelled from Earth to Centurian and became part of Jonathan Powers. That much is as it should be. Humans join the consciousness of other humans on a distant planet when they die. It’s what happened next that I don’t understand. Jonathan Powers entered the world of the dead, alive. I’m still searching for answers to how he did it and I’m supposed to know about these things. My name is Rose. I’m a little robin. You might have met me outside your house or in a local park. Don’t worry if you haven’t, you’ll meet me inside this book. I’m helping Jonathan find a way home. It’s one thing to go where only the dead have been, quite another to find a way back.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A National Book Award Finalist An Edgar Award Finalist A California Book Award Gold Medal Winner A dark, contemporary fairy tale in the tradition of Neil Gaiman. Jeremy Johnson Johnson hears voices. Or, specifically, one voice: the ghost of Jacob Grimm, one half of The Brothers Grimm. Jacob watches over Jeremy, protecting him from an unknown dark evil whispered about in the space between this world and the next. But Jacob can't protect Jeremy from everything. When coltish, copper-haired Ginger Boultinghouse takes a bite of a cake so delicious it’s rumored to be bewitched, she falls in love with the first person she sees: Jeremy. In any other place, this would be a turn for the better for Jeremy, but not in Never Better, where the Finder of Occasions—whose identity and evil intentions nobody knows—is watching and waiting, waiting and watching. . . And as anyone familiar with the Brothers Grimm know, not all fairy tales have happy endings. Veteran writer Tom McNeal has crafted a young adult novel at once grim(m) and hopeful, full of twists, and perfect for fans of contemporary fairy tales like Neil Gaiman's The Graveyard Book and Holly Black's Doll Bones. The recipient of five starred reviews, Publishers Weekly called Far Far Away "inventive and deeply poignant."
