Book Tom Hughes QC

Download or read book Tom Hughes QC written by Ian Hancock and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jiawei Shen (b.1948, China, from 1989, Australia)Tom Hughes QC2004Oil on canvas, 167 x 167 cmCollection of New South Wales Bar AssociationPurchased 2004© Jiawei Shen_____________________________________For more than thirty years, Tom Hughes, a scion of a notable Sydney family of high achievers, was one of Australia''s top barristers, renowned, respected and sometimes feared for his dominating presence in the courtroom. Equally at home in all jurisdictions, his theatrical style, command of language and forensic skills filled public galleries, exposed witnesses, persuaded juries and ensured that judges paid attention. An icon of the Sydney and Australian Bar, he appeared in a raft of celebrated cases, became the subject of many media profiles and was, from the 1970s to the 1990s, the country''s most expensive advocate.Hughes has also been a wartime pilot, a politician, an activist federal Attorney-General, a grazier, and a racehorse owner. He survived a broken marriage, a spiteful sacking from ministerial office and a prolonged though not permanent loss of an inherited Catholic faith. He endured years of frustration before finding the right partner to replicate the perfect marriage of his beloved parents. Even in dark times, however, a thorough professional and a prodigious worker, Hughes remained focused on his first love, the law, always upholding its traditions and processes. In addition to published material, the book draws on a huge trove of personal records, including fee books, intimate diaries, autobiographical jottings and private correspondence, supplemented by interviews with Hughes, his family, friends and colleagues. Using these sources, the book provides insights into a many-sided character - telling the story of how Hughes and his immediate forebears embraced more of their English than their Irish heritage while becoming distinctively Australian. It also offers a personal perspective on several decades of Australian political, social and legal history.** Ian Hancock speaking on Tom Hughes QC - Many Sides to A Character, The Sydney Institute_13 July 2016 Listen to podcast...In the media...Tom Hughes on FIVEaa Adelaide, Afternoons with Jeremy Cordeaux _24 June 2016 Listen to interview...Hughes who''s who, Richard Ackland, The Saturday Paper, 18-24 June 2016 Read article...Tom Hughes on 891 ABC Adelaide with Ian Henschke, Barrister Tom Hughes_16 June 2016 Listen to interview...Tom Hughes on ABC Radio National, Breakfast with Fran Kelly, The remarkable life of Tom Hughes QC_8 June 2016 Listen to interview...Tom Hughes on ABC Radio Sydney 702, Mornings with Wendy Harmer_8 June 2016Tom Hughes on ABC Radio Canberra 666, Mornings with Genevieve Jacobs_8 June 2016Justinian, On the Couch interviews Ian Hancock, 4 June 2016 Read interview...Federal election 2016: Hughes sorry for Abbott ''lunatic'' jibe, Rosie Lewis, The Australian - National Affairs, 4 June 2016 Read article...Making ''lunatic'' Abbott Lib leader a folly, Hughes wrote to Turnbull, Troy Bramston, The Australian, 3 June 2016 Read article...Tom Hughes urged defeated Malcolm Turnbull to stay in politics, Andrew Clark, Australian Financial Review, 3 June 2016 Read article...Three ministers and a funeral, Australian Financial Review, 3 June 2016 Read extract...Tom Hughes sounded warning on switch from son-in-law Malcolm Turnbull to ''lunatic'' Tony Abbott in 2009, Fergus Hunter, SMH, 3 June 2016 Read article...UPDATED: Tom Hughes sounded warning on switch from son-in-law Malcolm Turnbull to ''lunatic'' Tony Abbott in 2009, Fergus Hunter, SMH, 3 June 2016 Read article...Malcolm Turnbull''s father-in-law sent him a letter warning Tony Abbott was a ''lunatic'' and if he became Liberal leader he would ''be like a bull in a china shop'', AAP and John Carney for Daily Mail Australia, 3 June 2016 Read article...PM''s dad-in-law apologised to Abbott, picked up by SBS, 3 June 2016 Read article...PM''s dad-in-law apologised to Abbott, picked up by AAP, 3 June 2016 Read article...Tom Hughes, dropping Tony a line, Katharine Murphy, The Guardian, 3 June 2016 Read article...PM hoses down another Abbott-related problem, Quentin Dempster, The New Daily, 3 June 2016 Read article...Election 2016: Turnbull dad-in-law''s sorry-not-sorry note to Abbott, Fleur Anderson, Australian Financial Review, 3 June 2016 Read article...From the Launch Speech by The Hon Murray Gleeson AC, QC (29 June 2016) "The New South Wales Bar for several years has had, on the wall of its Common Room, a fine portrait of TEF Hughes QC, one of its former Presidents. This book contains a skilfully written account of Tom''s life and, as well, a measured and just assessment of his contribution to the law and to politics. The Federation Press made an excellent decision that Tom''s story should be available to the profession and the community, and followed through with a handsome publication. ... Tom Hughes was one of the best and most successful advocates produced by the New South Wales Bar. The book conveys the enormous range of his experience and the extent of his achievements. Ian Hancock, no doubt assisted by Tom, has made an excellent selection of cases to bring this out, and his commentary on these cases is balanced and well-informed. ... Murray Gleeson has been described as many things, but his grim work persona gave him the label that stuck - The Smiler.Born in a small country town in NSW, Gleeson became the nation's top barrister and its leading judge. Book Strengthening Forensic Science in the United States

Download or read book Strengthening Forensic Science in the United States written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2009-07-29 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scores of talented and dedicated people serve the forensic science community, performing vitally important work. However, they are often constrained by lack of adequate resources, sound policies, and national support. It is clear that change and advancements, both systematic and scientific, are needed in a number of forensic science disciplines to ensure the reliability of work, establish enforceable standards, and promote best practices with consistent application. Strengthening Forensic Science in the United States: A Path Forward provides a detailed plan for addressing these needs and suggests the creation of a new government entity, the National Institute of Forensic Science, to establish and enforce standards within the forensic science community. The benefits of improving and regulating the forensic science disciplines are clear: assisting law enforcement officials, enhancing homeland security, and reducing the risk of wrongful conviction and exoneration. Strengthening Forensic Science in the United States gives a full account of what is needed to advance the forensic science disciplines, including upgrading of systems and organizational structures, better training, widespread adoption of uniform and enforceable best practices, and mandatory certification and accreditation programs. While this book provides an essential call-to-action for congress and policy makers, it also serves as a vital tool for law enforcement agencies, criminal prosecutors and attorneys, and forensic science educators.

Greiner's personal story is also unusual. Book Tiberius with a Telephone

Download or read book Tiberius with a Telephone written by Patrick Mullins and published by Scribe Publications. This book was released on 2018-10-29 with total page 547 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the 2020 Australian National Biography Award and the 2020 NSW Premier’s Non-Fiction Award. The oddly compelling story of a man regarded as Australia’s worst prime minister. William McMahon was a significant, if widely derided and disliked, figure in Australian politics in the second half of the twentieth century. This biography tells the story of his life, his career, and his doomed attempts to recast views of his much-maligned time as Australia’s prime minister. After a long ministerial career under Menzies, McMahon became treasurer under Harold Holt, and fought a fierce, bitter war over protectionism with John McEwen. Following Holt’s death in 1967, McEwen had his revenge by vetoing McMahon’s candidature for the Liberal Party’s leadership, and thus paved the way for John Gorton to become prime minister. But almost three years later, amid acrimony and division, McMahon would topple Gorton and fulfill his life’s ambition to become Australia’s prime minister. In office, McMahon worked furiously to enact an agenda that grappled with the profound changes reshaping Australia. He withdrew combat forces from Vietnam, legislated for Commonwealth government involvement in childcare, established the National Urban and Regional Development Authority and the first Department of the Environment, began phasing out the means test on pensions, sought to control foreign investments, and accelerated the timetable for the independence of Papua New Guinea. But his failures would overshadow his successes, and by the time of the 1972 election McMahon would lead a divided, tired, and rancorous party to defeat. A man whose life was coloured by tragedy, comedy, persistence, courage, farce, and failure, McMahon’s story has never been told at length. Tiberius with a Telephone fills that gap, using deep archival research and extensive interviews with McMahon’s contemporaries and colleagues. It is a tour de force — an authoritative and colourful account of a unique politician and a vital period in Australia’s history.

Book Ainsley Gotto

Download or read book Ainsley Gotto written by Ian Hancock and published by . This book was released on 2020-01-02 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1968 the new Prime Minister, John Gorton, appointed Ainsley Gotto, aged 22, as his principal private secretary. Ainsley became one of the most talked-about young women in Australia. Hitherto, no woman had been so close to the centre of power, and certainly none was known publicly to be so close. Ainsley refused to see herself as a role model for secretaries and said she could not understand what the Women's Liberation Movement was all about. She thought her performance in the job answered the senior public servants, conservative Liberal politicians and some business leaders who considered it inappropriate that 'a mere girl' should exercise 'power and influence'. In November 1969, when Dudley Erwin was dumped from the Gorton ministry, he memorably and wrongly identified the cause of his removal: 'it wiggles, it's shapely and its name is Ainsley Gotto.' Ainsley became a celebrity, renamed in the tabloid press as 'Miss Wiggle' or 'The Wiggle'. Leaving Gorton in 1972 Ainsley took several jobs in what she called her 'afterlife'. Remaining obsessively private, Ainsley was a great networker in a national and international setting, and her diaries are full of meetings with the rich, the powerful, the titled and the very interesting. Yet, although Ainsley's connections, sharp mind and social skills opened many doors, she needed more than her 'unique experience' of government to replicate the excitement and fulfilment of her years with Gorton. This book describes and explains Ainsley's rise from a typing pool and shows how the Gorton years provided her with many opportunities but ill-equipped her to take advantage of them and probably cost her lasting personal happiness.

Book Born to Rule

Download or read book Born to Rule written by Paddy Manning and published by Melbourne Univ. Publishing. This book was released on 2015-10-26 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Born to Rule is the unauthorised biography that unravels the many layers of the man who has just become the 29th Prime Minister of Australia. The highs and lows of Malcolm Turnbull's remarkable career are documented here in technicolour detail by journalist Paddy Manning. Based on countless interviews and painstaking research, it is a forensic investigation into one of Australia's most celebrated overachievers. Turnbull's relentless energy and quest for achievement have taken him from exclusive Point Piper to Oxford University; from beating the Thatcher government in the Spycatcher trial to losing the referendum on the republic; from defending the late Kerry Packer—codenamed Goanna—in the Costigan Royal Commission to defending his own role in the failure of HIH, Australia's biggest corporate collapse. He was involved in the unravelling of the Tourang bid for Fairfax, struck it rich as co-founder of OzEmail, and fought his own hotly contested battle for Wentworth. As opposition leader he was duped by Godwin Grech's 'Utegate' fiasco; as the most tech-savvy communications minister he oversaw a nobbled NBN scheme. And now he has assumed the leadership of the Liberal Party for the second time after wresting the prime ministership from first-term PM Tony Abbott. Will Turnbull crash and burn as he has before or has his entire tumultuous life been a rehearsal for this moment?

Book Barney Greatrex

Download or read book Barney Greatrex written by Michael Veitch and published by Hachette Australia. This book was released on 2017-09-26 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The incredible untold World War II story of Australian hero BARNEY GREATREX - from Bomber Command to French Resistance fighter. A school and university cadet in Sydney, Barney Greatrex signed up for RAF Bomber Command in 1941, eager to get straight into the very centre of the Allied counterattack. Bombing Germany night after night, Barney's 61 Squadron faced continual enemy fighter attacks and anti-aircraft fire - death or capture by the Nazis loomed large. Very few survived more than 20 missions, and it was on his 20th mission, in 1944, that Barney's luck finally ran out: he was shot down over occupied France. But his war was far from over. Rescued by the French Resistance, Barney seized the opportunity to carry on fighting and joined the Maquis in the liberation of France from the occupying German forces, who rarely took prisoners. Later, Barney was awarded the French Legion of Honour, but for seventy years he said almost nothing of his incredible war service - surviving two of the most dangerous battlefronts. Aged 97, Barney Greatrex revealed his truly great Australian war story to acclaimed bestselling author Michael Veitch. 'fascinating . . . Veitch brings the story vividly to life' Sydney Morning Herald Pick of the Week 'Veitch has done a wonderful job . . . a fast-paced and thrilling tale' Daily Telegraph
