Book excerpt: It was the mid-1940's. A time of war, a time of Peace. In a gold mining town in Northern Ontario, a group of semi delinquents struggled with both. Yet in their own hilarious way, they found a method of coping with lofty expectations, a dysfunctional school system, and unrequited loves. Their exploits blurred the lines of the law, sometimes above, sometimes below, and sometimes in between. The motley group of adolescents led by Mucker DelGuidice, Soupbone Southam, Ole Hansen, and Dink Knowles cluttered the front of Ross' Groceries and Everything Else store on Toke Street where they hatched the plots that changed lives, including their own. Their domain included Gillies Lake whose ownership they claimed by virtue of squatter's rights. Here their canoes plied the waters in summer and their skates sliced the frozen ice in winter. The new Hollinger houses on Cherry Street, and Patricia Boulevard, and the homes on Toke Street and Lakeshore Road were their shelters. Nothing could break their bonds or come between them except, Jeannie. Only the sharpest of men, a Toke street resident-lawyer kept them out of jail. Their travels led them to a legendary lady, whose own life was marred with tragedy. She was Princess Maggie Leclair, a Chippewa who lived on Kamiscotia mountain. A soothsayer. Little did they know that for many, a warm night in September would be their last night on the shores of Gillies Lake.

Download or read book Valued Environments written by John R. Gold and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-03-21 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1982. People care about places. Inhabitants demand more participation in the changes proposed for their local environments, activists urge greater protection of countryside and natural environments, decision-makers feel threatened by the antagonism aroused by their powers and plans. The essays in this book have been drawn together to discover what lies behind these expressions of concern and discontent. Valued environments are places for which people feel commitment and affection, places which support a sense of personal identity and well-being. The authors explore the character and constituents of valued environments asking how our experiences of environments may be enhanced. What is the impact of environmental change? How can the future be accommodated in both rural and urban environments without destroying their essential qualities? The reader will find substantive evidence from case studies of environments valued by inhabitants and outsiders which answer these questions. Examples are taken from wilderness areas, fenland, market towns and large cities, commercial streets and residential neighbourhoods, environments of the past and those imagined in science fiction. The essays are united in their focus on the meaning of places and landscapes. The subtle but highly significant role of valued environments is examined thoroughly in the book. It will be of interest to all who care deeply about their surroundings, reflecting perhaps some of their own experiences as well as conveying information about the environmental experiences of others. Students of geography, environmental planning and conservation should also find the book directly relevant to their interests in man-environment relationships.

Download or read book Left Bank of the Hudson written by David J. Goodwin and published by Fordham Univ Press. This book was released on 2017-10-03 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the late 1980s, a handful of artists priced out of Manhattan and desperately needing affordable studio space discovered 111 1st Street, a former P. Lorillard Tobacco Company warehouse. Over the next two decades, an eclectic collection of painters, sculptors, musicians, photographers, filmmakers, and writers dreamt and toiled within the building’s labyrinthine halls. The local arts scene flourished, igniting hope that Jersey City would emerge as the next grassroots center of the art world. However, a rising real estate market coupled with a provincial political establishment threatened the community at 111 1st Street. The artists found themselves entangled in a long, complicated, and vicious fight for their place in the building and for the physical survival of 111 1st Street itself, a site that held so much potential, so much promise for Jersey City. Left Bank of the Hudson offers a window into the demographic, political, and socio-economic changes experienced by Jersey City during the last thirty years. Documenting the narrative of 111 1st Street as an act of cultural preservation, author David J. Goodwin’s well-researched and significant contribution addresses the question of the role of artists in economically improving cities. As a Jersey City resident, Goodwin applies his knowledge of the city’s rich history of political malfeasance and corruption, including how auspicious plans for a waterfront arts enclave were repeatedly bungled by a provincial-minded city administration. In writing this story, Goodwin interviewed thirteen artists and residents, two businesses, three government officials, and five non-profits, civic organizations, and community activists. The book chronologically explores the history and business of the P. Lorillard Tobacco Company, its evolution into a bustling arts community, the battle to preserve the warehouse as a historic structure, and the lessons to be drawn from the loss and ultimate demolition of the building in 2007, as well as the present state of the neighborhood. Setting the facts straight for future generations, Left Bank of the Hudson provides an illustrative lesson to government officials, scholars, students, activists, and everyday citizens attempting to navigate the “rediscovery” of American cities.
