Book Togetherness Without Standing too Close

Download or read book Togetherness Without Standing too Close written by Torrie Nunnally and published by Page Publishing Inc. This book was released on 2022-11-03 with total page 115 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Torrie and Curtis were from different states in the United States. He was born and raised in George during the Great Depression. She was born and raised in Alabama during World War II. While education was encouraged in Torrie's community, sharecropping was given top priority in the rural area of Georgia where Curtis grew up. He was forced to leave school before finishing the fifth grade to work in the fields. Both Curtis and Torrie looked long and hard for ways to escape their challenging beginnings in the Jim Crow South. He found his way to New Jersey and from there into the military. After graduating from high school, she, too, joined the army. This move made all the difference for both of them. Their paths met in the military as next-door neighbors in Japan. They would go on to a shared path of togetherness for over half a century. It has been said that it is not so much where one starts out in life but where he or she ends up that makes the difference. The difficult beginnings of these two individuals turned into a success story that needs to be told. Curtis overcame his education deficiency and earned three college degrees, including an electrical engineering degree from the University of California in Berkeley where he completed a successful thirty-seven-year career. He also completed a career in the United States Army Reserves as a command sergeant major. He then became a successful real estate salesperson. While all this was happening, Curtis and his wife, Torrie, made time to become real estate entrepreneurs. Torrie, too, earned three college degrees and completed a thirty-four-year career as an educator. She retired from her second career as a captain in the army reserves then went on to became a holistic wellness practitioner. Today, Torrie gives more of her time to activities related to the performing arts, which has always been her passion. One can see evidence of her love for acting shining through all that she does. Curtis and Torrie's paths did join, but they will tell you they succeeded on their journey together because they understood the importance of remaining true to their individual paths where they stayed true to each of their own life's purpose. In other words, they enjoyed a life of "togetherness, without standing too close."

Book The Sicilian Project

Download or read book The Sicilian Project written by Jo Danna and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2011-10-04 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: SOCIAL SCIENCE Hidden in the hollows of the Madonie Mountain in North Central Sicily are villages where roads and electricity arrive years after appearing in cities and towns. This is a place where the inhabitants are descended from a long line of serfs who were in bondage to a feudal lord and for whom aspects of feudal culture continue to be transmitted by elders to their children. From one such village, Lucia and Dominico D’Anna emigrated to Manhattan’s Lower East Side where author Jo Danna was born. Years later, anthropologist Margaret Mead sent Danna to that village to do her doctoral research. This was a time when winds of change from the modern world were beginning to upset the harmony of a community still rooted in the Middle Ages, where sons and daughters were pitted against elders trying vainly to preserve their ancient traditions, where arranged marriages persist. An example is her Sicilian aunt’s attempts to protect her virtue and the family honor by insisting that she be chaperoned everywhere. The Sicilian Project provides an enchanting, personal look at how rapid culture change splits apart generations and social classes. Efforts of today’s Sicilians to remove an unwanted outcome of medieval times, the Mafia, are also described.

Book excerpt: “Patricia Spadaro is a marvelous guide through the inner realms of the heart. I always feel uplifted by her words." —Marianne Williamson, #1 New York Times bestselling author of A Return to Love Honor Yourself: The Inner Art of Giving and Receiving (winner of two national book awards) skillfully guides us through one of the key stressors and paradoxes of our time—how to balance what others need with what we need, how to give and to receive. Should I sacrifice for others or take time to care for myself? Be generous or draw boundaries? Stay in a relationship or say goodbye? When I give to others, do I really need to give up myself? Tensions like these are not only a natural part of life, they are life. But rather than focusing on how to pamper ourselves, Honor Yourself goes to the heart of the problem so you can find real solutions. While modern society is ill-equipped to bring us back into balance, the sages of East and West are experts, and Honor Yourself explores their practical, and surprising, advice. Combining wisdom from around the world with real-life stories and a treasury of tools, it exposes the most potent myths about giving that can sabotage your relationships, career, finances, even your health, without you knowing it. With candor and compassion, it shows how to move beyond the myths to the magic of honoring yourself so you can live a life filled with possibility and passion and give your greatest gifts to your loved ones, your community, and the world. We are called to master the delicate dance of giving and receiving in virtually every area of our lives, and this beautiful work offers empowering and heartfelt ways to do it. It will free you to celebrate your own gifts and greatness as you explore the dynamics behind setting boundaries, being honest about unhealthy people in your life, honoring endings, using feelings to stay true to yourself, finding your own voice, giving with the heart rather than the head, and much more. Just as importantly, Honor Yourself will teach you the steps for staying in balance. For when you learn the steps, you can perform the dance—and that's when the magic begins.

Book Speak to Us of Love

  • Publisher : Osho Media International
  • Release : 2013-05-14
  • ISBN : 0880500689
  • Pages : 210 pages

Download or read book Speak to Us of Love written by Osho and published by Osho Media International. This book was released on 2013-05-14 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Introducing us to the most famous poems of the Lebanese poet Kahlil Gibran, Osho takes the reader into a mystical world, addressing essential issues in everybody’s life. The famous verse that gives the title to this book is about “love”—but not the ordinary love we know from novels and movies. Speak to us of Love gives a taste of a contemporary mystic at work, trying to disrupt our dreams, illusions, and the state of unconsciousness that prevents us from enjoying life to the fullest. This is about and for the millions of people in the world who have killed their love with their own hands, and who are now miserable. They never wanted to kill it, there was no intention to kill their love, but in their unconsciousness they started possessing. Husbands possess their wives, wives possess their husbands, and parents possess their children. Teachers are trying in every possible way to possess their students. Politicians are trying to possess countries. Religions are trying to possess millions of people and control every aspect their lives. This book shows that life can only thrive in freedom. Love never allows anyone to possess it, because love is our very soul. For Osho, the basis of all our neuroses or psychoses is simple: our souls are not nourished. Love, the basic nourishment, is missing. Osho comprehensively trounces the so-called religious and philosophical approaches to life. All that is of worth is to be found, not in the extraordinary, but in the ordinary; not in fantastical ideas of the “other world” beyond death, but in this very world that we find ourselves in here and now. In short, this book shows that making a simple yet utterly basic shift in our lives will awaken the silence in our beings and bring joy into our every moment.

In the desperate hunt for reasons that marriages fail, most researchers have ignored the factors that help marriages succeed. Together Through Thick and Thin: A Multinational Picture of Long-Term Marriage reports a landmark study of long-term satisfaction in marriage. Factors analyzed include degree of satisfaction, gender differences, socioeconomic level, family history, shared values, religious belief and practice, attitudes toward children, physical health, and problem-solving styles, among many others. Moreover, the book builds on existing documented literature on marriage.
