Book excerpt: This book is devoted to Toeplitz and singular integral operators with symbols that have discontinuities of the oscillating type. Criteria for the normal solvability of such operators are established and several methods for describing the kernel and image spaces of the operators are presented. The approach is based on the idea of modelling discontinuities with an "infinite index" by appropriate inner functions, especially by infinite Blaschke products. The corresponding techniques have been elaborated by the authors during the last two decades, and they are applicable to both symbols with slowly and rapidly increasing arguments. Moreover, the book reveals exciting connections between invariant subspaces of the shift operator, bases in Banach spaces, and various classes of entire and meromorphic functions. The book aims at making advanced topics accessible to a broad readership. Book excerpt: The present book deals with the finite-part singular integral equations, the multidimensional singular integral equations and the non-linear singular integral equations, which are currently used in many fields of engineering mechanics with applied character, like elasticity, plasticity, thermoelastoplasticity, viscoelasticity, viscoplasticity, fracture mechanics, structural analysis, fluid mechanics, aerodynamics and elastodynamics. These types of singular integral equations form the latest high technology on the solution of very important problems of solid and fluid mechanics and therefore special attention should be given by the reader of the present book, who is interested for the new technology of the twentieth-one century. Chapter 1 is devoted with a historical report and an extended outline of References, for the finite-part singular integral equations, the multidimensional singular integral equations and the non-linear singular integral equations. Chapter 2 provides a finite-part singular integral representation analysis in Lp spaces and in general Hilbert spaces. In the same Chapter are investigated all possible approximation methods for the numerical evaluation of the finite-part singular integral equations, as closed form solutions for the above type of integral equations are available only in simple cases. Also, Chapter 2 provides further a generalization of the well known Sokhotski-Plemelj formulae and the Nother theorems, for the case of a finite-part singular integral equation.

Book excerpt: A few years aga the authors started a project of a book on the theory of systems of one-dimensional singular integral equa tions which was planned as a continuation of the monograph by one of the authors and N. Ya. Krupnik ~~ concerning scalar equa tions. This set of notes was initiated as a chapter dealing with problems of factorization of matrix functions vis-a-vis appli cations to systems of singular integral equations. Working systematically onthischapter and adding along the way new points of view, new proofs and results, we finally saw that the material connected with factorizations is of independent interest and we decided to publish this chapter as aseparate volume. In fact, because of recent activity, the amount of material was quite large and we quickly learned that we cannot cover all of the results in complete detail. We have tried to include a represen tative variety of all kinds of methods, techniques,results and applications. Apart of the current work exposes results from the Russian literature which have never appeared in English translation. We have also decided to reflect some of the recent results which make interesting connections between factorization of matrix functions and systems theory. The field remains very active and many results and connec tions are still not weIl understood. These notes should be viewed as a stepping stone to further development. The authors hope that sometime they will return to complete their original plan.
