Book Mathematics Teaching Today

Download or read book Mathematics Teaching Today written by Terese Herrera and published by National Council of Teachers of English. This book was released on 2007 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mathematics Teaching Today: Improving Practice, Improving Student Learning, Second Edition, updates the NCTM groundbreaking publication Professional Standards for Teaching Mathematics, first published in 1991. Like the original, this updated volume articulates a vision for effective mathematics teaching and describes the support systems that are required to achieve that vision. This book delineates Standards for various aspects of the teaching profession, including teachers' practise, professional supervision, collegial interaction and career-long professional growth. However, more than curriculum standards documents are needed to improve student learning and achievement. Teaching matters. Therefore, exploring what goes on in mathematics classrooms is essential to identifying issues and looking for opportunities for improvement. Principles and Standards for School Mathematics provides a framework for professional practise that supports the NCTM's vision of more and better mathematics for all children. This book expounds on that framework, explicating the roles of teachers, supervisors, teacher educators, mathematicians, professional developers, parents, politicians, community members and others in improving the teaching and learning of mathematics. The Standards offer a vision for high-quality mathematics teaching and support structures for teachers. What matters in the long run, however, is how classrooms across North America are transformed and how teaching practises evolve to address the mathematical learning needs of children.

Book Mathematics Today Twelve Informal Essays

Download or read book Mathematics Today Twelve Informal Essays written by L.A. Steen and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 365 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of the present book of essays is to convey to the intelligent nonmathematician something of the nature, development, and use of mathe matical concepts, particularly those that have found application in current scientific research. The idea of assembling such a volume goes back at least to 1974, when it was discussed by the then-newly-formed Joint Projects Committee for Mathematics (JPCM) of the American Mathematical Soci ety, the Mathematical Association of America, and the Society for Indus trial and Applied Mathematics. Currently, the nine members of the JPCM are Saunders Mac Lane (Chairman) of the University of Chicago, Frederick J. Almgren, Jr. of Princeton University, Richard D. Anderson of Louisiana State University, George E. Carrier of Harvard University, Hirsh G. Cohen ofthe International Business Machines Corporation, Richard C. DiPrima of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Robion C. Kirby of the University of California at Berkeley, William H. Kruskal of the University of Chicago, and George D. Mostow of Yale University. The JPCM decided to make production of this volume its first major proj ect and requested the Conference Board of the Mathematical Sciences (CBMS), of which its three sponsoring societies are all member organiza tions, to approach the National Science Foundation on its behalffor support of the undertaking. A proposal submitted by the C BMS in December 1974 and in revised form in July 1975 was granted by the Foundation in May 1976, and work on assembling the volume got under way.

Book excerpt: A brilliant tour of mathematical thought and a guide to becoming a better thinker, How Not to Be Wrong shows that math is not just a long list of rules to be learned and carried out by rote. Math touches everything we do; It's what makes the world make sense. Using the mathematician's methods and hard-won insights-minus the jargon-professor and popular columnist Jordan Ellenberg guides general readers through his ideas with rigor and lively irreverence, infusing everything from election results to baseball to the existence of God and the psychology of slime molds with a heightened sense of clarity and wonder. Book Teaching Mathematics in Colleges and Universities Case Studies for Today s Classroom

Download or read book Teaching Mathematics in Colleges and Universities Case Studies for Today s Classroom written by Solomon Friedberg and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2001 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Progress in mathematics frequently occurs first by studying particular examples and then by generalizing the patterns that have been observed into far-reaching theorems. Similarly, in teaching mathematics one often employs examples to motivate a general principle or to illustrate its use. This volume uses the same idea in the context of learning how to teach: by analyzing particular teaching situations, one can develop broadly applicable teaching skills useful for the professional mathematician. These teaching situations are the case studies of the title. Just as a good mathematician seeks both to understand the details of a particular problem and to put it in a broader context, the examples presented here are chosen to offer a serious set of detailed teaching issues and to afford analysis from a broad perspective. Each case raises a variety of pedagogical and communication issues that may be explored either individually or in a group facilitated by a faculty member. The methodology of case studies is widely used in areas such as business and law. The consideration of the mathematics cases presented here should help readers to develop teaching skills for their own classrooms.

Book Teaching Today s Mathematics in the Middle Grades

Download or read book Teaching Today s Mathematics in the Middle Grades written by Art Johnson and published by Allyn & Bacon. This book was released on 2006 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Teaching Today's Mathematics in the Middle Grades" provides current and future middle school teachers with the mathematics content, essential concepts, methodology, activities, and resources to both learn and teach mathematics in grades 5 to 8.The authors focus exclusively on the middle school learner and the middle school mathematics curriculum. Although each chapter discusses foundational mathematics concepts from earlier grades and previews topics that will follow the middle grades, the emphasis is on the middle school. This selective focus allows for proper development of critical topics in the middle school such as proportionality algebraic thinking, and the integral role of manipulatives. Assessment practices and problem solving are also emphasized from the viewpoint of effective practices for middle school students. Unique Features React and Reflect features prompt classroom discussions by asking the reader to think independently regarding a statement, issue, or concern. Try This features ask the reader to solve a problem first, or extend the current discussion by working on an extension of a problem. By completing the problem first, teachers are putting themselves in the place of their students, helping the teacher discover first-hand common misconceptions. Numerous exercises and activities appear at the end of each chapter to reinforce student understanding of various topics and ensure mastery of the mathematics content. The NCTM Principles and Standards are emphasized throughout the book, beginning with a discussion in Chapter 1. Each of the content chapters (6-11) opens with the relevant NCTM content standards for that chapter. In addition, marginal icons highlight areas within the text in which the NCTM process standards are discussed. Reviewers rave. . . "From the content, organization, and approach, it is evident that the authors have years of teaching experience. This gives the text authority." --"Marina Krause, California State University-Long Beach""The authors do an excellent job of presenting in sequential order essential concepts, methodology, activities, and technological resources essential to assist [the] beginning math teacher in preparing to teach in the middle school program." --"Gerald Jarmon, North Carolina Central University"
