Book excerpt: The Arkansas Archeological Survey conducted an archeological survey and testing program for the U.S. Corps of Engineers' proposed Conway Water Supply project in the Cypress Creek basin, Conway County, Arkansas. During a 1978 survey of the reservoir area, 26 archeological sites were recorded. Further surveying of the reservoir area, a spillway area, pipeline and road relocation corridors in the present program resulted in recording 53 additional sites within the direct impact of the project. Pedestrian survey and shovel test survey methods were used to discover sites and shovel tests and 1 m by 2 m excavation units were used for testing sites. A study of selected historic log house sites resulted in the following conclusion: The combination of archeological data with oral and written sources made it possible to document and preserve much information on the past inhabitants of the area, their socioeconomic lifestyles, and their historical heritage. Book excerpt: A Times Higher Education Book of the Week Approximately 200,000 years ago, as modern humans began to radiate out from their evolutionary birthplace in Africa, Neanderthals were already thriving in Europe—descendants of a much earlier migration of the African genus Homo. But when modern humans eventually made their way to Europe 45,000 years ago, Neanderthals suddenly vanished. Ever since the first Neanderthal bones were identified in 1856, scientists have been vexed by the question, why did modern humans survive while their closest known relatives went extinct? “Shipman admits that scientists have yet to find genetic evidence that would prove her theory. Time will tell if she’s right. For now, read this book for an engagingly comprehensive overview of the rapidly evolving understanding of our own origins.” —Toby Lester, Wall Street Journal “Are humans the ultimate invasive species? So contends anthropologist Pat Shipman—and Neanderthals, she opines, were among our first victims. The relationship between Homo sapiens and Homo neanderthalensis is laid out cleanly, along with genetic and other evidence. Shipman posits provocatively that the deciding factor in the triumph of our ancestors was the domestication of wolves.” —Daniel Cressey, Nature
Download or read book Historic Faulkner County written by Paulette H. Walter and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 1999 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Arkansas River, which runs along the western edge of Faulkner County, has remained a primary thoroughfare since before the time when settlers followed the first European explorers into the heart of Arkansas and points west. The county was located near the horseshoe-shaped bend in the Arkansas River, which provided an ideal location for these settlers' cattle raising and crop production. The railroad's Conway Station soon became the county seat of the newly established Faulkner County. From Faulkner County's emergence as a farming and railroad community to the development of manufacturing and military training facilities, this engaging photographic history mingles fact with rich storytelling. Within these pages, discover rare photographs that illustrate a variety of the area's historic claims to fame, including the establishment of the University of Central Arkansas, the Ward Bus Company, the WAAC training camp, and Faulkner County's fiddle-playing namesake.
Download or read book Principles of Water Resources written by Thomas V. Cech and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2018-04-03 with total page 530 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Proper management of water resources can take many forms, and requires the knowledge and expertise to work at the intersection of mathematics, geology, biology, geography, meteorology, political science, and even psychology. This book provides an essential foundation in water management and development concepts and practices, dissecting complex topics into short, understandable explanations that spark true interest in the field. Approaching the study of water resources systematically, the discussion begins with historical perspective before moving on to physical processes, engineering, water chemistry, government regulation, environmental issues, global conflict, and more. Now in its fourth edition, this text provides the most current introduction to a field that is becoming ever more critical as climate change begins to threaten water supplies around the world. As geography, climate, population growth, and technology collide, effective resource management must include a comprehensive understanding of how these forces intermingle and come to life in the water so critical to us all.
