Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Niklas Frank was just seven years old when his father, Hans Frank, Hitler's legal adviser and Governor General of occupied Poland, was executed at Nuremberg as a Nazi war criminal. Throughout his life, Niklas has attempted to come to terms with the enormity of the crimes his father committed, and this remarkable book traces how after years of research he uncovered the extent of the horror unleashed by the man who was known as the butcher of Poland. The Father is an extraordinary account of a scarred son struggling to comprehend the depravity of the acts that were committed by his father. Whereas other descendants of Hitler's henchmen and co-collaborators have tried to explain or to forget the crimes of their forebears, Niklas's disgust for his father's actions is unremitting. This book is his attempt to seek revenge. Featuring forewords by Philippe Sands and Sir Ian Kershaw, The Father is by turns shocking, twisted and heart-rending; a devastating settling of accounts written by a son addressing his father as he pictures him burning in the eternal fires of hell.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Estranged at the age of six from her mother, who sent her away from her hometown of Brighton in rural Zululand, brilliant architect Afroze Bhana has carved out an impressive life for herself in Cape Town. But when she receives word that her aging mother is desperately ill, she finds herself compelled to return to her place of birth to find answers about her painful childhood. Afroze arrives in Brighton to find that her mother, Sylvie—who was a doctor and a fierce activist during the dark days of the anti-apartheid struggle—is a shadow of her formidable self, but Sylvie has still retained her sarcasm and anger toward the daughter that she sent away. Somehow, Sylvie cannot draw her daughter close, even facing the looming threat of her own mortality. She remains in the cottage of Afroze’s childhood, frozen in a world where she surrounds herself with luxury and garish indulgences, cared for by the fiercely protective Halaima, a Malawian refugee. A moving novel about the complexities of family ties, The Architecture of Loss beautifully explores the ways in which the anti-apartheid struggle—a struggle in which the roles of women have been largely overlooked—irrevocably damaged many of its unsung heroes.

It's been said that musicians live for the next new sound._ Well, the musicians of Europe were presented with the biggest new sound ever when the Ring of Fire brought the future back to 1631._ What will the court musicians think when they hear Bach, Stravinsky, and the Beatles?_ What will the street and tavern musicians think when faced with Johnny Cash, Metallica, and Nirvana? _Things don't go smoothly for Marla Linder and her friends. And Murder . . . The Thirty Years War was an 'interesting' time to be alive, in the proverbial Chinese curse sense of the word._ Then Grantville arrived from the future, bringing technology and philosophies that set European civilization on its ear._ But that's not all that came back with Grantville._ Imagine trying to establish modern police procedures in a time where neither the powers-that-be nor the people underneath them provide much support._ Up-timer Byron Chieske and his down-timer partner Gotthilf Hoch walk some mean streets and lonely roads. Book Quantum Physics and God

    Book Details:
  • Author : Manfred Bauer
  • Publisher : BoD – Books on Demand
  • Release : 2023-02-03
  • ISBN : 3757831667
  • Pages : 252 pages

Download or read book Quantum Physics and God written by Manfred Bauer and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2023-02-03 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Quantum physics and the theory of relativity have shaken our conception of reality. They have made us realize that the universe is not as we perceive it. Religion and philosophy have so far failed to adapt our view of the world on the basis of these findings. Thus, together with the reader, the author sets out to clarify the fundamental questions of life. He skillfully juxtaposes convincing answers from different fields of knowledge. Scientific chapters about the world of quantum objects, space and time, or the origin and evolution of the universe stand in stark contrast to chapters about scientifically unexplainable events such as miracles, spiritualistic phenomena, findings about life after death, and reincarnation. In addition, the author discusses the atheistic worldview. The scientific sections are easily understandable, especially since they are, to a large extent, free of technical terms and formulas. In the religious chapters, the author draws parallels between ideas from all religions (especially Hinduism, Buddhism, and Taoism) and scientific findings. Descriptions of the God-experiences of spiritual masters from all times, cultures, and religions as well as personal anecdotes and stories imagined by the author provide manifold paradigm shifts in the detailed consideration of one and the same thing: the ultimate reason of our existence and the meaning of life.

Book Gesture and Thought

  • Author : David McNeill
  • Publisher : University of Chicago Press
  • Release : 2008-09-15
  • ISBN : 0226514641

Download or read book Gesture and Thought written by David McNeill and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2008-09-15 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gesturing is such an integral yet unconscious part of communication that we are mostly oblivious to it. But if you observe anyone in conversation, you are likely to see his or her fingers, hands, and arms in some form of spontaneous motion. Why? David McNeill, a pioneer in the ongoing study of the relationship between gesture and language, set about answering this question over twenty-five years ago. In Gesture and Thought he brings together years of this research, arguing that gesturing, an act which has been popularly understood as an accessory to speech, is actually a dialectical component of language. Gesture and Thought expands on McNeill’s acclaimed classic Hand and Mind. While that earlier work demonstrated what gestures reveal about thought, here gestures are shown to be active participants in both speaking and thinking. Expanding on an approach introduced by Lev Vygotsky in the 1930s, McNeill posits that gestures are key ingredients in an “imagery-language dialectic” that fuels both speech and thought. Gestures are both the “imagery” and components of “language.” The smallest element of this dialectic is the “growth point,” a snapshot of an utterance at its beginning psychological stage. Utilizing several innovative experiments he created and administered with subjects spanning several different age, gender, and language groups, McNeill shows how growth points organize themselves into utterances and extend to discourse at the moment of speaking. An ambitious project in the ongoing study of the relationship of human communication and thought, Gesture and Thought is a work of such consequence that it will influence all subsequent theory on the subject.
