Download or read book The Power of Women written by Susan L. Smith and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2016-11-11 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eve tempting Adam with the apple, Delilah shearing Samson's hair, Phyllis riding the philosopher Aristotle like a horse—from the patristic period through the sixteenth century, examples of disorderly women such as these from the Bible, antiquity, and romance were cited to prove beyond any doubt that women exercise a power that no man, however superior his moral and physical qualities, can resist. An example of Latin topica, loci, or loci communes central to ancient rhetoric and medieval literature, the Power of Women topos illustrated how a woman could dominate, humiliate, and even destroy the man who loved her too well. Two or more infamous female figures were brought together to exemplify a cluster of interrelated themes: the wiles of women, the power of love, and the trials of marriage. Susan L. Smith's comprehensive study of the Power of Women topos in written texts and in art emphasizes the critical phase of its development from the late twelfth to the end of the fourteenth century. During this period , she argues, traditional employment of the topos exclusively to condemn women and justify male authority underwent a dramatic shift as new voices (some of them female voices) appropriated the Power of Women to contest and relativize the misogynistic views it had been created to promote. The Power of Women analyzes the topos's shifting operations in the context of ancient and medieval theories of rhetoric, particularly with respect to the practice of exemplification, which presuppose the possibility of conflicting judgments on disputed topics. Smith further supports her argument by reference to a wide range of recent theoretical writings by Mikhail Bakhtin and others.

Download or read book Daughters of Hecate written by Kimberly B. Stratton and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2014-10-01 with total page 553 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Daughters of Hecate unites for the first time research on the problem of gender and magic in three ancient Mediterranean societies: early Judaism, Christianity, and Graeco-Roman culture. The book illuminates the gendering of ancient magic by approaching the topic from three distinct disciplinary perspectives: literary stereotyping, the social application of magic discourse, and material culture. The authors probe the foundations of, processes, and motivations behind gendered stereotypes, beginning with Western culture's earliest associations of women and magic in the Bible and Homer's Odyssey. Daughters of Hecate provides a nuanced exploration of the topic while avoiding reductive approaches. In fact, the essays in this volume uncover complexities and counter-discourses that challenge, rather than reaffirm, many gendered stereotypes taken for granted and reified by most modern scholarship. By combining critical theoretical methods with research into literary and material evidence, Daughters of Hecate interrogates a false association that has persisted from antiquity, to early modern witch hunts, to the present day.

Download or read book Island Bats written by Theodore H. Fleming and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2010-03-15 with total page 568 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The second largest order of mammals, Chiroptera comprises more than one thousand species of bats. Because of their mobility, bats are often the only native mammals on isolated oceanic islands, where more than half of all bat species live. These island bats represent an evolutionarily distinctive and ecologically significant part of the earth’s biological diversity. Island Bats is the first book to focus solely on the evolution, ecology, and conservation of bats living in the world’s island ecosystems. Among other topics, the contributors to this volume examine how the earth’s history has affected the evolution of island bats, investigate how bat populations are affected by volcanic eruptions and hurricanes, and explore the threat of extinction from human disturbance. Geographically diverse, the volume includes studies of the islands of the Caribbean, the Western Indian Ocean, Micronesia, Indonesia, the Philippines, and New Zealand. With its wealth of information from long-term studies, Island Bats provides timely and valuable information about how this fauna has evolved and how it can be conserved.
Download or read book Lucifer How Art Thou Fallen written by Ellen G. White and published by TEACH Services, Inc.. This book was released on 2007 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This compilation from the Spirit of Prophecy (the writings of Ellen G. White) covers the history of Lucifer from his creation to his fall, thru his warfare on earth, down to his final destruction. The purpose of this book is not to exalt Satan, but rather to show his character works, and methods as he wars against God, Christ, and the Church. As the Apostle Paul warned, "Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices" (2 Corinthians 2:11), we are vulnerable in our ignorance. God's people need to be aware of the serpent's cunning, so as not to fall under his power and influence. That knowledge alone, however, will not keep us safe. We must "Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil." (Ephesians 6:11) The tremendous amount of material on this subject presented a challenge in compiling that which could tell the high points of the history, provide the best possible lessons and warnings for God's people, extend hope and encouragement for these last days (when Satan and his hosts are making "war with the remnant"), while keeping it within the confines of the cover of this small volume. Our hope and prayer is that we have succeeded in this challenge, presenting the reader with a priceless aid in preparation for earth's final conflict, as well as the day-to-day trials and struggles with the powers of darkness. The Lord be magnified!
