Book Boys in the Back Row

Download or read book Boys in the Back Row written by Mike Jung and published by Chronicle Books. This book was released on 2020-10-06 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Best friends Matt and Eric are hatching a plan for one big final adventure together before Eric moves away: during the marching band competition at a Giant Amusement Park, they will sneak away to a nearby comics convention and meet their idol—a famous comic creator. Without cell phones. Or transportation. Or permission. Of course, their final adventure together is more than just that—really, it's a way for the boys to celebrate their friendship, and their honest love and support for one another. That's exactly what we love so much about The Boys in the Back Row: it's an unabashed ode to male friendship, because love between boys, platonic or otherwise, is something to celebrate. And of course, because this is Mike Jung, we'll be celebrating it with hilariously flawed hijinks and geekiness galore!

Book excerpt: Synopsis At an early age, a young girl met and fell in love with a good looking boy who often visited the Kingston wharf to swim with other boys. It was close to this area that Doreen met and fell in love with this boy known to others only as Roy. This boy was the oldest of the pack of boys who he often hangs out with at the wharf. She had no idea what would become of her life. It did not take long before the two became really close. Although Doreen was under age, she failed to follow her mother's advise and was sexually involved with the boy she met. She became pregnant and later gives birth to a child with amazing capabilities. From the inception of his birth, Nigel, was deemed a child of mystery and remarkable talent. He had visions in the world that many people, including his family, could not believe. At a young age, he was able to tell vivid stories of his dreams and imaginations to his family that at times appeared to be seemingly real. Even in school he developed the ability to read and write much quicker than others who were not able to at his level. Who knew that one day this young boy would rise above it all. Only time will give an account to what kind of man Nigel would grow up to be, as he get over the spirits that followed the family for most of his young life. Incredibly, his family dug deeper to explore the visions and talent this youngster possessed. They would later realize that there is more to his talents that set him apart from other children. They would later find out most of his talents would stem from spirits teaching him the basic principles of learning to read and write. Soon enough, the thoughts of dealing and finding ways to evade ghost would overwhelm them. The spirits would haunt them everywhere they traveled. However, despite all their fears casted by ghosts, Nigel was the least fearful of the crack walls, the rising bed and the falling clock. Ultimately, their vision and hope to rise against it all will one day become a possibility.

From the author of the beloved novel The Giant’s House—finalist for the National Book Award—comes a beautiful new story collection, her first in twenty years. Laced through with the humor, the empathy, and the rare and magical descriptive powers that have led Elizabeth McCracken’s fiction to be hailed as “exquisite” (The New York Times Book Review), “funny and heartbreaking” (The Boston Globe), and “a true marvel” (San Francisco Chronicle), these nine vibrant stories navigate the fragile space between love and loneliness. In “Property,” selected by Geraldine Brooks for The Best American Short Stories, a young scholar, grieving the sudden death of his wife, decides to refurbish the Maine rental house they were to share together by removing his landlord’s possessions. In “Peter Elroy: A Documentary by Ian Casey,” the household of a successful filmmaker is visited years later by his famous first subject, whose trust he betrayed. In “The Lost & Found Department of Greater Boston,” the manager of a grocery store becomes fixated on the famous case of a missing local woman, and on the fate of the teenage son she left behind. And in the unforgettable title story, a family makes a quixotic decision to flee to Paris for a summer, only to find their lives altered in an unimaginable way by their teenage daughter’s risky behavior. In Elizabeth McCracken’s universe, heartache is always interwoven with strange, charmed moments of joy—an unexpected conversation with small children, the gift of a parrot with a bad French accent—that remind us of the wonder and mystery of being alive. Thunderstruck & Other Stories shows this inimitable writer working at the full height of her powers. Praise for Thunderstruck & Other Stories “Restorative, unforgettable . . . a powerful testament to the scratchy humor and warm intelligence of McCracken’s writing.”—Sylvia Brownrigg, The New York Times Book Review (Editor’s Choice) “[A] bewitching and wise collection . . . playful, even joyful.”—O: The Oprah Magazine “Stunningly beautiful . . . brilliantly moving . . . Moments of joy and pure magic flicker and pitch-perfect humor acts as a furtive SOS signal through the fog of loss.”—Los Angeles Times “Each of Thunderstruck’s nine stories is a storm: delightful and destructive, packed with electricity, fascinating to watch unfold.”—Salon “The stories here are brilliant, funny and heartbreaking. . . . Elizabeth McCracken is a national treasure.”—Paul Harding, The Wall Street Journal “Pure delight: one lyrical, impeccably constructed sentence after another.”—Chicago Tribune “Beautifully wrought . . . As painstaking as a watchmaker, McCracken disassembles life down to its smallest parts.”—The Boston Globe

In this volume, featuring stories handpicked by NoirCon founder Lou Boxer and acclaimed author Duane Swierczynski, four of today's most promising crime fiction talents pay tribute to the often underrated writers who addressed the secret fears and desires of Americans in the postwar period.

Book excerpt: "My name is unimportant, but you can call me Jack. I'm a musician by choice, a magician by profession, and a bastard by disposition. I'd been doing the magic thing for about five years when they found me. They said I had a talent, that I was smart enough and fit enough and enough of a shit that I could serve my country in a way most people never even get to hear about. And I did want to serve my country, didn't I? I didn't really want to contemplate what might happen if I said no." And so Jack found himself on the front line of a secret war that most people simply wouldn't believe was possible. Working for a secret organisation tasked with defending our country from whatever supernatural threat faces it. MI5 know nothing about and would laugh if they found out. Well at first they would ... Whether wiping out a group of demon summoners, infiltrating a coven determined to assassinate the PM or rooting out a neo-nazi sect who are trying to bring back Hitler from the dead Jack is a very modern sort of magician - trained in a variety of the dark arts but also a dab hand with a Heckler and Koch, skilled in unarmed combat and electronic surveillance. David Devereux has combined the action writing of McNab and Ryan with dark supernatural thrills and produced a blistering new breed of supernatural thriller. This is Dennis Wheatley for the 21st century.
