What are all reforms, restorations, victories of truth, but protests of a minority: efforts clogged and incomplete, of the good and brave, just enough in their own day to stop instant ruin - the appointed means to save what is to be saved, but in themselves failures? Good men work and suffer, and bad men enjoy their labours and spoil them; a step is made in advance - evil rolled back and kept in check for a while, only to return perhaps the stronger. Book Telling Stories Wrong

Download or read book Telling Stories Wrong written by Gianni Rodari and published by Enchanted Lion Books. This book was released on 2022-06-21 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Everyone knows how "Little Red Riding Hood" goes. But Grandpa keeps getting the story all wrong, with hilarious results! "Once upon a time, there was a little girl called Little Yellow Riding Hood--" "Not yellow! It's Red Riding Hood!" So begins the story of a grandpa playfully recounting the well-known fairytale--or his version, at least--to his granddaughter. Try as she might to get him back on track, Grandpa keeps on adding things to the mix, both outlandish and mundane! The end result is an unpredictable tale that comes alive as it's being told, born out of imaginative play and familial affection. This spirited picture book will surprise and delight from start to finish, while reminding readers that storytelling is not only a creative act of improvisation and interaction, but also a powerful pathway for connection and love. Telling Stories Wrong was written by Gianni Rodari, widely regarded as the father of modern Italian children's literature. It exemplifies his great respect for the intelligence of children and the kind of work he did as an educator, developing numerous games and exercises for children to engage and think beyond the status quo, imagining what happens after the end of a familiar story, or what possibilities open up when a new ingredient is introduced. This book is illustrated with great affection by the illustrious artist Beatrice Alemagna (Child of Glass), who counts Gianni Rodari as one of her "spiritual fathers."

  • Author : Mark Osiel

Download or read book The Right to Do Wrong written by Mark Osiel and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2019-02-25 with total page 513 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Common morality—in the form of shame, outrage, and stigma—has always been society’s first line of defense against ethical transgressions. Social mores crucially complement the law, Mark Osiel shows, sparing us from oppressive formal regulation. Much of what we could do, we shouldn’t—and we don’t. We have a free-speech right to be offensive, but we know we will face outrage in response. We may declare bankruptcy, but not without stigma. Moral norms constantly demand more of us than the law requires, sustaining promises we can legally break and preventing disrespectful behavior the law allows. Mark Osiel takes up this curious interplay between lenient law and restrictive morality, showing that law permits much wrongdoing because we assume that rights are paired with informal but enforceable duties. People will exercise their rights responsibly or else face social shaming. For the most part, this system has worked. Social order persists despite ample opportunity for reprehensible conduct, testifying to the decisive constraints common morality imposes on the way we exercise our legal prerogatives. The Right to Do Wrong collects vivid case studies and social scientific research to explore how resistance to the exercise of rights picks up where law leaves off and shapes the legal system in turn. Building on recent evidence that declining social trust leads to increasing reliance on law, Osiel contends that as social changes produce stronger assertions of individual rights, it becomes more difficult to depend on informal tempering of our unfettered freedoms. Social norms can be indefensible, Osiel recognizes. But the alternative—more repressive law—is often far worse. This empirically informed study leaves little doubt that robust forms of common morality persist and are essential to the vitality of liberal societies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Right and Wrong; Or She Told the Truth at Last: With Other Stories There was a stir, followed by profound silence in the village school-room. The new master, notwithstanding a most kind and good-natured face, was about to prove himself master, indeed, of that little world where the small people had hitherto governed themselves according to their inclinations, and decidedly mischief-loving propensities. There was something terrible, now, in the dark flashing eyes and upraised hand of the master - that slender hand, grasping a rod yielding as willow, but strong as steel. The little sinner under the threatening instrument, looked up with flinching eyes, and flesh that crept, in momentary dread of the blow. "I give you one last chance of saving yourself from a severe punishment," said the man, in deep, suppressed tones. "You understand me, John Truslow, and must learn this day that I mean precisely what I say. Are you sorry for being disrespectful and disobedient?"
