Book excerpt: A family saga filled with love, a love story of a family with heart… In 1970, Violet Hawkins’ only wish at eighteen is to escape her life in the Dayton, Ohio, foster-care system and make her way to the west coast to enjoy a mellow life and find the love she’s been missing all her life. Lettie makes it to San Francisco, but soon learns she needs a job if she’s to live properly. A kind young man named Kenton Chandler offers her a sandwich and a job at his father’s inn and vineyards. With nothing to lose, Lettie takes him up on his offer and begins a whole new life in the Willamette Valley, Oregon. She immediately falls in love with the land and is fascinated with the idea of growing grapes to make wines. She, Kenton, and Rafe Lopez become friends as she learns about running the small inn on the property. At the same time she marries Kenton, a stroke kills his father. And then before she can tell Kenton she’s pregnant, he dies in an automobile accident. Heartbroken and burdened with the gift of the Chandler Hill Inn and Winery, she’s left with the task of making them a success. Struggling to raise a child alone while working to grow the business, Lettie makes a shocking discovery that changes everything. Camilla “Cami” Chandler comes home from France to take over the Chandler Hill Inn and Winery for her recently deceased grandmother, Lettie, as she’d always promised. Determined to succeed in this new venture, she finds herself in trouble from the beginning when she discovers most of her grandmother’s estate intended for maintaining the inn and its business expenses was lost in a Ponzi scheme. She forges ahead to provide her guests with wonderful experiences and to produce the best wines in Willamette Valley. After being ditched by her French boyfriend, she decides that being friends with Drew Farley is the safest way to proceed. He loves grape growing and winemaking as much as she does and isn’t looking for anything beyond friendship. When a bride planning a wedding at the inn tells Cami that she looks exactly like her best friend, life becomes even more complicated. Never having known even the name of her father, Cami searches for a connection and comes to realize how complicated love and family can be. Louise “Lulu” Kingsley is thrilled to discover after years of wishing for a sibling, Cami Chandler is her half-sister. When Cami invites her to live at Chandler Hill, Lulu jumps at the chance to leave behind all the heartache in her recent life. Book Asher and Stacey s Magnificent Road Trip

Download or read book Asher and Stacey s Magnificent Road Trip written by Stacey Cohen-Maitre Ph.D. and published by Balboa Press. This book was released on 2021-02-01 with total page 107 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Asher and Stacey’s Magnificent Road Trip is a story about a mother and son on a road trip along the Pacific Coast of Southern California. Asher is a nineteen-year-old child/teen/man who is diagnosed with severe cerebral palsy and a visual impairment rendering him nonverbal, wheelchair bound and visually impaired. Stacey is his devoted mother and a neuropsychologist who specializes in the assessment of children with neurodevelopmental disabilities. Along the way, Asher and Stacey experience some unique challenges encompassing physical, mental and spiritual realms, some of which are absolutely ridiculous and almost too hard to believe and some that are truly heart wrenching. Asher and Stacey also cross paths with a variety of characters, some of whom are completely clueless about how to be around someone with disabilities and others who are friendly, kind and share a piece of their bright spirit. Since Stacey is all alone with her son, who is twice her size, just getting Asher onto a hotel bed or showering him without the help of her husband turns into a comedy of errors in a "I Love Lucy" kind of way. Somehow, they each survive this quirky road trip in one piece but their love and understanding for each other evolves to the deepest level that a mother and son could ever aspire to. . . Book A Medley of Moods

Download or read book A Medley of Moods written by Annie Pearl Asher and published by eBookIt.com. This book was released on 2018-03-01 with total page 89 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Twenty years ago I went to the funeral of a friend I admired and respected. The sadness I felt prompted me to write the fictional story "One More Time," in Part Two of this book; it's the ideal friendship between two friends who were inseparable. Over three decades ago I wrote "The Days Back Home," and "We keep Love Alive." I chose these two stories from the others I have written through the years because Part One of A MEDLEY OF MOODS is about family matters. I wrote The Unbroken Bond, The Sacrifice, A False Conception, and The Procrastinator to show how family members can come together in love and good will whether they are related or not–if they are willing. Death Pain and Being a Widow is my true story about the loss of my son and my spouse. Some of Part Two and Part Three are nonfiction. But whether the parts are fiction or nonfiction, there is a grain of truth in everything that I have written. And I believe that my readers will feel me through the things that I have written and they will know the difference between the two.

Book Madeline McDowell Breckinridge and the Battle for a New South

Download or read book Madeline McDowell Breckinridge and the Battle for a New South written by Melba Porter Hay and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2009-04-24 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A biography of the Kentucky women’s rights activist and progressive reformer, featuring personal interviews and recently discovered correspondence. Preeminent Kentucky reformer and women’s rights advocate Madeline McDowell Breckinridge (1872-1920) was at the forefront of social change during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. A descendant of Henry Clay and the daughter of two of Kentucky’s most prominent families, Breckinridge had a remarkably varied activist career that included roles in the promotion of public health, education, women’s rights, and charity. Founder of the Lexington Civic League and Associated Charities, Breckinridge successfully lobbied to create parks and playgrounds and to establish a juvenile court system in Kentucky. She also became president of the Kentucky Equal Rights Association, served as vice president of the National American Woman Suffrage Association, and even campaigned across the country for the League of Nations. In the first biography of Breckinridge since 1921, Melba Porter Hay draws on newly discovered correspondence and rich personal interviews with her female associates to illuminate the fascinating life of this important Kentucky activist. Deftly balancing Breckinridge’s public reform efforts with her private concerns, Hay tells the story of Madeline’s marriage to Desha Breckinridge, editor of the Lexington Herald, and how she used the match to her advantage by promoting social causes in the newspaper. Hay also chronicles Breckinridge’s ordeals with tuberculosis and amputation, and emotionally trying episodes of family betrayal and sex scandals. Hay describes how Breckinridge’s physical struggles and personal losses transformed her from a privileged socialite into a selfless advocate for the disadvantaged. Later as vice president of the National American Women Suffrage Association, Breckinridge lobbied for Kentucky’s ratification of the Nineteenth Amendment, which gave women the right to vote in 1920. While devoting much of her life to the woman suffrage movement on the local and national levels, she also supported the antituberculosis movement, social programs for the poor, compulsory school attendance, and laws regulating child labor. In bringing to life this extraordinary reformer, Hay shows how Breckinridge championed Kentucky’s social development during the Progressive Era. Praise for Madeline McDowell Breckinridge and the Battle for a New South “An important contribution to American history, one that is of special significance to Kentucky history, the Progressive Era, and the women's rights movement.” —Paul Fuller, author of Laura Clay and the Women’s Rights Movement “Hay brings to life a multi-dimensional woman, emblematic of her times, with whom readers can identify and sympathize.” —Melanie Beals Goan, author of Mary Breckinridge: The Frontier Nursing Service and Rural Health in Appalachia

Download or read book Plural Wife written by Mabel Finlayson Allred and published by University Press of Colorado. This book was released on 2012-05-17 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mabel Finlayson Allred was a wife of Rulon Allred, leader of the Apostolic United Brethren, one of the major groups of fundamentalist Mormons who, since about the 1930s, have practiced plural marriage as separatists from the mainstream Latter-day Saints Church. Mabel’s autobiography maintains a mood of everyday normalcy strikingly in contrast with the stress of the ostracized life she was living. Her cheerful tone, expressive of her wish to live simply and gracefully in this world, is tempered by more somber descriptions of her personal struggle with clinical depression, of Rulon Allred’s inner struggles, of tensions with the law and with Allred’s fundamentalist colleagues, and ultimately by her forthright account of his assassination. Emerging from this unique narrative is the portrait of a woman buoyed by faith in both her religion and her husband, a window into the interior life of a woman seeking a resilient simplicity in an uncommonly challenging life. Plural Wife, conntextualized by Martha Bradley’s introduction, gives us insight into Mabel’s experience of history during an important period of the 20th century and advances our understanding of life ways of 20th century polygamy and the growth of the fundamentalist movement.
