Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The daughter of a D-Day paratrooper and her husband, a PTSD therapist, discover a family legacy of love, trauma, and resilience when they set out to explore a vast trove of WWII correspondence, official military documents, personal effects, and unique militaria found in closets and basements after her father’s death. Young Sue Gurwell had always known that her father had been a paratrooper. An old camo parachute from Holland served as her backyard tent, and high on a shelf she mustn’t touch, eight red devils in parachutes grinned from the front of mysterious drinking glasses Dad had sent Mom during the war. And then there was the special poem in his roll-top desk she sometimes snuck a peek at, written by a member of Dad’s regiment. This poem was a premonition of the sergeant’s death. “Yes,” her dad told her, “He was right—he died on D-Day.” But it’s not until 2016, after her parents had both passed away, that Susan Gurwell Talley and her husband Jack L. Talley begin to understand the true extent and significance of the wartime artifacts that had been staples of Sue’s childhood. The Talley’s discovered that Sue’s father, Lt. George L. Gurwell, Executive Officer, HqHq, 508th PIR, had silently squirreled away thousands of wartime documents in the family home. Like most combat veterans, George was never one to talk about the war; but the historic collection of official records, correspondence, photographs, maps, memorabilia, cultural artifacts, and unique ephemera constitute quite possibly the most extensive, various, and complete documentation of the 508th held privately today. This precious resource could not have passed into better hands than those of Jack and Sue Talley. Jack, a PhD psychologist specializing in PTSD, was the first to understand that George had PTSD symptoms that still lingered from the war years when he and George were introduced on June 6, 2001. That evening, the 57th anniversary of D-Day, George first opened up about the war, and preceded to talk late into the night. In that conversation lies the genesis of this book.

Book excerpt: Chasing Gratitude is a gritty, no-nonsense look at a man's self-destruction, redemption, and restitution. Divided into 30 portions, it is suitable for devotional reading or group study. For much of his early adult life, Douglas Boyer chased someone else's dream and ended up an addict and a prisoner. As he recognized what God had done for him and the divine purpose for his life, he left his former pursuit and began chasing gratitude. Through the medium of free verse, Douglas paints a picture of his former life, which was painful for him to live. He pours out his confession before GOD and man openly, remorsefully, and bravely, as one who has been a prisoner sitting in "darkness and the shadow of death" (Psalm 107:14). Addiction, as defined by Romans 7:14–25, is powerlessness! Unless you have experienced it, you cannot academically or intellectually understand it. Douglas assures those living the lifestyle of addiction, yet who desire redemption through Christ: You are not alone. He encourages the spouses and children of those living a lifestyle of addiction: Trust that GOD surely hears your prayers. ~ Dr. Neville Patricq Butler, Doctor of Theology, UCLA; pastor, Narrow Gate Church, Charlotte, North Carolina; co-founder, Unshackled Substance and Alcohol Recovery Ministry; former, felon, gang member, and addict “…for those whose family deals with the horrors of addiction, it gives solace and hope. It will also give insight for professionals and non-professionals who wish to help people under the helplessness of addiction.” ~ Kevin Morgan, editor

The Woman in the Mirror tells how once she goes beyond the memories and faces her demons, she finally discovers her true being and vividly recounts how her false self, the identity birthed in the lies of her past, collapses. Shattering the iron grip of her past, she heals and brings forth a new story. Mejil presents the unadulterated expression of her most powerful self, the authentic self.

Download or read book Carry Me Back written by Steven Deyle and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2005-04-14 with total page 411 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originating with the birth of the nation itself, in many respects, the story of the domestic slave trade is also the story of the early United States. While an external traffic in slaves had always been present, following the American Revolution this was replaced by a far more vibrant internal trade. Most importantly, an interregional commerce in slaves developed that turned human property into one of the most valuable forms of investment in the country, second only to land. In fact, this form of property became so valuable that when threatened with its ultimate extinction in 1860, southern slave owners believed they had little alternative but to leave the Union. Therefore, while the interregional trade produced great wealth for many people, and the nation, it also helped to tear the country apart. The domestic slave trade likewise played a fundamental role in antebellum American society. Led by professional traders, who greatly resembled northern entrepreneurs, this traffic was a central component in the market revolution of the early nineteenth century. In addition, the development of an extensive local trade meant that the domestic trade, in all its configurations, was a prominent feature in southern life. Yet, this indispensable part of the slave system also raised many troubling questions. For those outside the South, it affected their impression of both the region and the new nation. For slaveholders, it proved to be the most difficult part of their institution to defend. And for those who found themselves commodities in this trade, it was something that needed to be resisted at all costs.Carry Me Back restores the domestic slave trade to the prominent place that it deserves in early American history, exposing the many complexities of southern slavery and antebellum American life.
