He's the only one who can help her get rid of Milton, her mom's repulsive boyfriend who keeps putting moves on her. Can she get her unavailable father to help her? Meanwhile, Armando's got plenty of problems, too. He's tired of his gangster lifestyle, which has caused the disintegration of his family. He needs to extract his irascible mother, the Senora, from a nursing home, while enlisting her aid in averting the closing of some public pools by corrupt bigwigs who want to snatch the only source of relief from the summer heat from New York's poor and minorities. The Senora's got the goods on these sleazy movers and shakers, including the great builder, Robert Moses. But, can these three stop bickering long enough to aid each other? Can they put aside their differences to stop corrupt men from defrauding the less fortunate? Will they be able to forgive each other and become a family once more? They're all in for a bumpy ride as they take on perverts, powerbrokers, assassins and mobsters.

The collection encompasses happenings in different places and times, ranging from early nineteenth century Italy or America to contemporary accounts either in America or South America. Several present the many facets of love. In some cases, unusual responses of a man or a woman are guided by unexpected expressions of love. For example, a disturbed Viet Nam veteran after witnessing the birth of a girl becomes a hidden, one-man protection squad while she is growing up. He saves her from a number of situations including a kidnapping and possible murder. In another story, a girl is being trained as a trickster by her grandfather. In trying to con a young man she falls in love with him. Many other yarns have different twists and turns. Six are mystery/adventure stories having surprising denouements.

Book Between the Lines

Download or read book Between the Lines written by Larry Siems and published by University of Arizona Press. This book was released on 1995-04-01 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the continuing U.S. debate over illegal immigration, a human face has rarely been shown. The topic has been presented as a monolithic abstraction, a creation of statistics, political rhetoric, and fear. This collection of letters between undocumented immigrants in California and their families back home reveals the other side of the story. Published for the first time in paperback, Between the Lines reveals the often poignant human drama currently being played out along the U.S.-Mexico border. The letters, presented in Spanish and English, express powerful feelings of hope, uncertainty, and fear among the undocumented travelers as they arrive in the United States and seek work, social support and legal status. The letters from their families in Mexico, Guatemala, and El Salvador return feelings of hope, love, and support. Translator/editor Siems provides a powerful and lyrical introductory essay that sets the stage for the letters that follow.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the bestselling author of See Jane Date and The Secret of Joy comes a charming, warm-hearted story about a woman’s search for happiness after inheriting her grandmother’s cooking school. When Holly Maguire inherits “Camilla’s Cucinotta,” her late grandmother’s home-based Italian cooking school in Blue Crab Island, Maine, twelve of the sixteen students for the upcoming fall class drop out. After all, Holly isn’t a seventy-five-year-old Milanese love goddess, whose secret sauces had aphrodisiac properties and whose kitchen table fortune-telling often came true. Holly, a broken-hearted thirty-year-old who’s never found her niche, can barely cook at all. But she’s determined to keep her beloved grandmother’s legacy alive. Armed with Camilla’s hand-scrawled recipe book, Holly welcomes her students: apprentice Mia, a twelve-year-old desperate to learn to cook Italian to stop her divorced father from marrying his ditzy girlfriend; Juliet, Holly’s childhood friend grieving for her newborn—and the marriage she left behind on the mainland; Simon, struggling to be an every-other-weekend dad to his young son after his wife left him; and Tamara, a single thirty-something yearning for love. Mixing fervent wishes and bittersweet memories with simmering sauces and delectable Italian dishes, Holly and the students of The Love Goddess’ Cooking School create their own recipes for happiness and become masters of their own fortunes.

Book Creating Charismatic Bonds in Argentina

Download or read book Creating Charismatic Bonds in Argentina written by Donna J. Guy and published by University of New Mexico Press. This book was released on 2016-06-01 with total page 183 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In collecting hundreds of letters to Juan and Eva by everyday people as well as from correspondence solicited by Juan Perón, this book promotes a view that charismatic bonds in Argentina have been formed as much by Argentines as by their leaders, demonstrating how letter writing at that time instilled a sense of nationalism and unity, particularly during the first Five Year Plan campaign conducted in 1946. It goes beyond the question of how charisma influenced elections and class affiliation to address broader implications. The letters offer a new methodology to study the formation of charisma in literate countries where not just propaganda and public media but also private correspondence defined and helped shape political polices. Focusing on the first era of Peronism, from 1946 to 1955, this work shows how President Perón and the First Lady created charismatic ways to link themselves to Argentine supporters through letter writing.
