Book excerpt: The first of a series to come, To K(no)w Avail is a fictional tale of two young people, both Christians, who struggle with a mutual attraction to one another while striving to do their best in all areas during their freshmen college year. Avail, a recent graduate from a public high school in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, decides to attend Whitaker University, less than an hour away from home. Her experience with the opposite sex never proved to be what she felt she needed in life, but it never stopped her from hoping for better. Shortly before she begins college, she starts dating Donovan, a high school senior who possesses every endearing quality that she desired in a suitor; he even agrees to wait to engage in sexual activities until they married. Not realizing the power of attraction and the difficulty with long distance relationships, Avail goes to Whitaker with wide eyes full of hope, eventually seeing the breathtaking Kyle. Also from Pittsburgh, Kyle attended a private boarding high school out of state. With all that freedom, he took advantage of it with the ladies even though he had Celeste, his long-term girlfriend waiting for him at home. He always questions his shaky dedication to her and wanted to break up with her, but Kyle never did. Once he experiences the culture of Avail, he decides it's finally time to break up with Celeste and move on to a greater quest.

Book How to Know If It s Time to Go

Download or read book How to Know If It s Time to Go written by Lawrence Birnbach and published by Union Square & Co.. This book was released on 2010-08-03 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A controversial look at whether a marriage can be saved—or if its “time to go.” For the millions caught in unhappy marriages, consumed by sadness, anger, and fear, the question haunts: “Should I divorce?” Now, in their insightful new book, a husband-and-wife team of marriage experts helps readers find the answer by taking them through ten steps to determine if their relationship has reached the breaking point. While Drs. Birnbach and Hyman do not advocate divorce, they point out that the most desirable situation—a happy long-term marriage—may simply not be possible in some cases. The book also discusses how the lives of people who stay in chronically unhappy marriages compare with those who split up. Filled with poignant case studies, cutting-edge research, and a 100-question self-assessment to determine if its “time to go,” this unique guide dispels the myths about divorce and enables readers to recognize if there is still hope . . . or if they (and their families) are better off apart.

M. Ballantyne. One of the first works of juvenile fiction to feature exclusively juvenile heroes, the story relates the adventures of three boys marooned on a South Pacific island, the only survivors of a shipwreck. Robinson Crusoe is a novel by Daniel Defoe, first published on 25 April 1719. The first edition credited the work's protagonist Robinson Crusoe as its author, leading many readers to believe he was a real person and the book a travelogue of true incidents. The story has been thought to be based on the life of Alexander Selkirk, a Scottish castaway who lived for four years on a Pacific island called "Más a Tierra", now part of Chile, which was renamed Robinson Crusoe Island in 1966. The Mysterious Island is a novel by Jules Verne, published in 1874. The original edition, published by Hetzel, contains a number of illustrations by Jules Férat. The novel is a crossover sequel to Verne's famous Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea and In Search of the Castaways, though its themes are vastly different from those books. Book Getting to Know Ourselves and Others Through the ABCs

Download or read book Getting to Know Ourselves and Others Through the ABCs written by Claudia Finkbeiner and published by IAP. This book was released on 2015-01-01 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a valuable resource for teachers and other professionals who are looking for a proven way to increase cultural appreciation and awareness. New applications of the ABCs model of Cultural Understanding and Communication are presented and discussed in this new volume, based on studies done in the United States, and Canada and Europe. In this ground-breaking project, the authors describe how the ABCs model complicated and challenged and changed the cultural perceptions of those who participated in it, even those who were initially highly resistant to such possibilities. At the heart of the project is the exchange of narratives – life stories that give insight into the cultural worlds of selves and others. In addition to the narratives, other instruments including the Transcultural Competence Scale (TCC), provide further evidence of the positive impact of the ABCs on participants' receptivity toward cultural differences. In the TRANSABCs project, researchers from both sides of the Atlantic invited teacher candidates, students who will become workplace and other professionals to write an autobiography (A) of themselves from various cultural perspectives, a biography (B) of an individual who is culturally different from themselves along particular dimensions, and to use these documents to conduct cross-cultural comparisons (C) between themselves and the person they interviewed. Furthermore, candidates developed culturally responsive ideas for the school or the workplace (C). These exchanges and analyses produced epiphanies and insights that translated into specific actions to improve cultural understanding and communication in classrooms and workplaces. Educators and professionals can take from these examples to inspire their own personal journey toward greater cultural understanding and sensitivity.

Book What Did the Biblical Writers Know and When Did They Know It

Download or read book What Did the Biblical Writers Know and When Did They Know It written by William G. Dever and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 2001-05-10 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For centuries the Hebrew Bible has been the fountainhead of the Judeo-Christian tradition. Today, however, the entire biblical tradition, including its historical veracity, is being challenged. Leading this assault is a group of scholars described as the "minimalist" or "revisionist" school of biblical studies, which charges that the Hebrew Bible is largely pious fiction, that its writers and editors invented "ancient Israel" as a piece of late Jewish propaganda in the Hellenistic era. In this fascinating book noted Syro-Palestinian archaeologist William G. Dever attacks the minimalist position head-on, showing how modern archaeology brilliantly illuminates both life in ancient Palestine and the sacred scriptures as we have them today. Assembling a wealth of archaeological evidence, Dever builds the clearest, most complete picture yet of the real Israel that existed during the Iron Age of ancient Palestine (1200 600 B.C.). Dever's exceptional reconstruction of this key period points up the minimalists' abuse of archaeology and reveals the weakness of their revisionist histories. Dever shows that ancient Israel, far from being an "invention," is a reality to be discovered. Equally important, his recovery of a reliable core history of ancient Israel provides a firm foundation from which to appreciate the aesthetic value and lofty moral aspirations of the Hebrew Bible.
