Book excerpt: Praying Gods Word is a work by author Henry McBride that is the culmination of several years of conscientious reverent study of the Bibles New Testament Epistles and the direction given in them to those who want to adhere to the teachings of Jesus Christ and the will of God. With all due diligence, Henry has transposed the admonitions and instructions given by the Apostle Paul and the authors of the other Letters into fluid, fervent personal prayers that are in the very words used by them. The universal applications from the Book of Romans through the Book of Jude has for centuries been self-evident and trusted in the pulpits, so why not use them as a basis for individual prayer? Praying Gods Word is not just a book, it is an experience. It is not a tutorial; instead it is a face-to-face involvement with the God of Heaven. It is not the entirety of prayer, but an encouragement to prayer, for which there is neither substitute nor shortcut. It is the authors hope that you will begin a life altering conversation with God that will conclude when you hear Him say to you those long sought after words, Well done you good and faithful servant!

Book Carl Van Vechten and the Harlem Renaissance

Download or read book Carl Van Vechten and the Harlem Renaissance written by Leon Coleman and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-10-24 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book evaluates Carl Van Vechten's contribution to the Harlem Renaissance by presenting hitherto unexamined documentary evidence. The author draws on correspondence, manuscripts, personal memorabilia, and published materials to examine the origins and development of the period in the 1920s which was termed the New Negro Renaissance. In the later years of the 1920s, as a result of the success of his novel, Nigger Heaven, Carl Van Vechten received extensive publicity associating him with Harlem and with the Harlem Renaissance. The vehement controversy which the book aroused among African American critics and the black press, who attacked it, and the African American authors and friends of Van Vechten who defended it, obscured the true extent of Van Vechten's role in the Harlem Renaissance. This study sheds light on the Van Vechten controversy which has continued to the present day. (Ph.D. dissertation, University of Minnesota, 1969; revised with new preface)
