Book Father Browne s Titanic Album

Download or read book Father Browne s Titanic Album written by E. E. O'Donnell and published by Messenger Publications. This book was released on 2021-04-01 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a passenger on the first two legs of Titanic's ill fated voyage, Father Francis Browne SJ's photographs are an immensely important record. As well as taking a unique set of photos, Father Browne also assembled an incredibly valuable album of Titanic material such as an original deck plan, menus, letters to him from fellow passengers, contemporary newspaper cuttings and other documents, many of which are reproduced here. Thanks to the gift of a ticket from his uncle, a young Jesuit named Francis Browne travelled on the Titanic during her maiden voyage from Southampton, to Cherbourg to Cork. Invited to remain with the ship as it crossed the Atlantic, Fr Browne was saved from possible disaster by a telegram from his Jesuit superior ordering him to "get off that ship". When the unthinkable happened and the Titanic sank, Fr Browne's photographs appeared on the front pages of newspapers all around the world. For many years the photographs of Fr Browne were forgotten until 1985 when Fr Eddie O'Donnell happened across an old tin trunk in the Jesuit archives and re-discovered 42,000 photographs, including the Titanic collection.

Book Titanic in Photographs

Book excerpt: PHOTOGRAPHY & PHOTOGRAPHS. The name Titanic has become synonymous with catastrophe, the story of this luxurious liner legendary. Wrecked after colliding with an iceberg on her maiden voyage, the loss of around 1,500 lives among her passengers and crew has gone down in history as one of the most emotive and tragic disasters in history. In this evocative collection of photographs the authors of Titanic The ShipMagnificent tell her full story, from the shipyards of Harland Wolff and its early vessels, with the backdrop of the great race to build the biggest and best passenger liner, to the frenzy of excitement surrounding her launch. Looking at her officers and crew, as well as her stops at Cherbourg and Queenstown - including some special, rare photographs - the book follows the story to its inevitable conclusion, considering the lifeboats, the presence of the Carpathia and the aftermath of the disaster.

Book RMS Titanic in 50 Objects

Download or read book RMS Titanic in 50 Objects written by Bruce Beveridge and published by The History Press. This book was released on 2022-09-29 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On 15 April 1912, passengers stood on a dimly lit Boat Deck, looking down at the lifeboats they were told to enter. In the freezing air, away from the warmth of the interior, they had to decide whether to enter a boat that would be lowered into darkness or remain on an 'unsinkable' ship. RMS Titanic in 50 Objects is a look at the world-famous liner through the objects that tell her story. Sheet music recovered from the body of a musician, a full-sized replica of her First Class Entrance Hall clock, a lifeboat from a fellow White Star Line ship – all of these objects and more come together to tell not only the tragedy of the ship herself, but also that of her passengers and crew. Lavishly illustrated and extensively researched by two of the world's most foremost Titanic experts, this is her history brought to life like never before.

Book The Titanic in Print and on Screen

Download or read book The Titanic in Print and on Screen written by D. Brian Anderson and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2014-12-09 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Titanic scholars contend that the demise of "the unsinkable ship" left more behind than a memory of April 15, 1912, as an important point in history. Through books, films, stories, and songs, the archetypal shipwreck has endured as a metaphor for the perils of mankind's hubris and the fallibility of technology. In 1985, the discovery of the long-missing wreckage two miles below the surface of the Atlantic revitalized interest in the Titanic and spawned a new generation of books, films, and, for the first time, websites, and computer games. James Cameron's blockbuster Titanic became the biggest movie of all time and engendered still greater popular interest in the tragic event. This bibliography is a survey of the immense volume of literary, dramatic, and commercial endeavors that came out of history's most compelling shipwreck. Organized by genre in accessible categories and short entries, the book includes Titanic-inspired documentaries, narrative films, children's books, histories, short stories, novels, plays, articles, essays, software, websites, poems, and songs. Each entry includes a brief review, bibliographic information, and the technical details of the specific source. The reviews include subjective analysis designed to reflect the usefulness of the source and to be of benefit to researchers and scholars. Five appendices include lists of the actors appearing in more than one Titanic film, brief film and television appearances of the Titanic, films never or not yet released, books that survived the wreck, and books written by passengers.
