Book Surgical Adhesives Sealants

Download or read book Surgical Adhesives Sealants written by David H. Sierra and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2020-03-06 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Surgical tissue adhesives are an ancient idea, going back to the beginnings of recorded history. The concept of adhering, rather than suturing, packing, or stapling planes of tissue is attractive, in that it is fast-acting and assures complete closure. Numerous technologies have been tried; some with limited success, others outright failures. In short, the perfect adhesive does not exist. Limitations occur in a number of areas: strength, toxicity, degradation, and safety. It is also important to keep in mind that "one size fits all" does not apply to adhesives in surgical applications any more than it does in day-to-day application. As one would not use paper glue to seal a bathtub, one would presumably not apply an adhesive onto tendons, which is suitable for sealing corneas. The properties required of an adhesive for each indication are quite different. Over the last twenty-five years, advances have been made in a wide range of technologies targeting some embodiment of a practical and safe adhesive. Foremost and successful among these are cyanoacrylates, marine adhesive proteins, and fibrin-based sealants. Another promising adhesive technology is laser solders, a mixture of polypeptides and proteoglycans, which integrates with the repair site when laser energy is applied. In light of these advances in the field, the Symposium for Surgical Tissue Adhesives was organized and held at the Atlanta Hyatt from October 8-10, 1993. The goal was to bring together these far-flung technologies in a comprehensive and cohesive manner. Presentations by investigators from around the world described the history of adhesives in medicine, current technologies, laboratory characterizations, and application developments, as well as regulatory aspects and clinical applications. We felt that as many viewpoints as possible, however conflicting, were important to present in order to give the most complete picture of the state of the art of surgical adhesives.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although vitiligo has traditionally been very difficult to treat, anew breakthrough surgical treatment is expanding options forpractitioners and patients. Standard treatments depend on the severity of the condition andthe patient's feelings of disfigurement. Cover-up cosmetics workwell for some people. Other more sophisticated forms of treatmentinclude gradually developing color back in the depigmented areas(repigmentation) by PUVA or other ultraviolet light treatments, butthis is extremely slow and intensive, often requiring severalhundred treatments. This new form of treatment, which involves surgicallytransplanting melanocytes into the white areas, is most successfulin patients with stable vitiligo over less than 30% of their bodysurface area. It complements medical therapies in achievingcomplete and sustained repigmentation and is rapidly gainingpopularity in all major centers. This is the first book available which describes this majoradvance in detail. Explains the new treatment of surgically transplantingmelanocytes into the affected areas of the skin to providedermatologists and surgeons with the latest state-of-the-artinformation Written by the international leaders who pioneered thistreatment Presents all the latest information on the topic, eliminatingthe need to search through multiple sources for specific data

Book A Clinical Guide to Dental Traumatology E Book

Download or read book A Clinical Guide to Dental Traumatology E Book written by Louis H. Berman and published by Elsevier Health Sciences. This book was released on 2006-09-25 with total page 521 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This practical, highly illustrated book describes the treatment and management of commonly encountered traumatic injuries to the teeth. It relates these types of trauma to crown fractures, root fractures, luxation injuries, and exarticulations. A step-by-step reference, this book also discusses complications that may involve surrounding soft and hard tissues, plus those that may arise in managing medically compromised patients. Hundreds of full-color photographs and illustrations show concepts and depict case studies and treatment outcomes. Step-by-step descriptions of treatment plans offer "recipes" for treating patients according to type of injury. For each type of traumatic injury, you'll learn these key steps: How to perform a correct initial assessment of the problem. How to determine whether the patient suffers any related problems. How to record the injury and its subsequent treatment in the patient record. How to avoid future problems by ensuring that the entire tooth is treated — including any hidden injury to the pulp or dentin. Information on etiology and epidemiology of problems promotes more effective treatment of specific injuries and conditions. The Law and Dental Trauma chapter explains legal issues unique to treating dental injuries under emergency conditions. Psychological Impact of Injuries chapter describes the reactions that trauma patients may have, and how dentists can improve treatment by providing the patient with emotional support and holistic management. Chapters on hard tissue injuries focus on injuries to tooth/hard tissue anatomy — and one chapter examines soft tissue management — discussing types of trauma and their effects on surrounding oral tissues. Introductory chapter provides an overview of topics discussed in the book. Hundreds of references are listed alphabetically at the end of each chapter with research studies and current articles for further research. An interdisciplinary approach includes periodontal, endodontic, and pediatric considerations for specific types of injuries.

All recent techniques in aesthetic and reconstructive surgery and their outcomes are described in a clear, comprehensive manner; chapters present the latest research results in stem cell and regenerative medicine, their application to plastic and reconstructive surgery, in particular for hand surgery, ulcer, and capsule contractures in post breast augmentation procedures. Related specific techniques as breast fat transfer, breast hybrid implant, fat transfer and buttock fat transfer are also discussed. Safety issues in fat transfer procedures are examined accurately, particularly those involving buttock fat transfer. Each procedure is completed by a scientific analysis of the main reasons for complications, how to prevent them and the safety guidelines recommended as golden standard to be followed. The surgical part contains clinical cases related to each chapter topic, videos, and all chapters have a box with take home messages.
