Book excerpt: "Casemate has a long history of publishing high quality military history non-fiction. Lately, they have expanded their range of work to include well written novels using wartime settings." – WWII History MagazineThe engaging story of a young American naval officer undertaking his first command, in the middle of World War II. Having survived the sinking of his first ship, Ensign Ash Miller USNR is promoted and assigned to command one of the sleek new additions to “the splinter fleet,” a 110-foot wooden submarine chaser armed with only understrength guns and depth charges. His task is to bring the ship swiftly into commission, weld his untried crew into an efficient fighting unit, and take his vessel to sea in order to protect the defenseless Allied merchant vessels which are being maliciously and increasingly sunk by German U-Boats, often within sight of the coast. Ash rises to the deadly challenge he faces, brings his crew of three officers and 27 men to peak performance, and meets the threats he faces with understated courage and determination, rescuing stricken seamen, destroying Nazi mines, fighting U-Boats, and developing both the tactical sense and command authority that will be the foundation upon which America's citizen sailors eventually win the war. During rare breaks in operations, Ash cherishes a developing relationship with the spirited Claire Morris who embodies the peaceful ideal for which he has been fighting.

Book excerpt: The only girl among four brothers, Aine is a neglected and lonely child. Perceptive, secretive, and constantly afraid, she is sensitive to the nuances of atmosphere and the secrets of others -- particularly those of her emotionally abused mother and aunt. Above all, she is drawn to the mysterious magnetism of Dunbeg, the rambling old castle on the coast of Ireland that her family uses as a holiday retreat. At the age of ten, at Dunbeg, she meets her American cousin Rupert for the first time. One sunny afternoon, a childish act of disobedience changes her life forever, and the consequences of that day will follow her always. Also perpetually in her thoughts is the deep and lasting relationship forged with the only person who believes in her -- Rupert, who has returned to America. Despite her determination to leave behind all that oppressed her as a child, Aine grows up haunted -- by Dunbeg, the focus and source of her terror; and by thoughts of Rupert, the only person she has ever loved, who she meets again as an adult when he is now engaged to be married.... In this deeply passionate and page-turning new novel, The Song of the Tide, Mary Ryan sensitively explores the complexities of relationships whose driving forces range from fear and control to forbidden love.

Book A Righte Merrie Christmasse The Story of Christ Tide

Download or read book A Righte Merrie Christmasse The Story of Christ Tide written by John Ashton and published by Library of Alexandria. This book was released on 1968-01-01 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The day on which Jesus Christ died is plainly distinguishable, but the day of His birth is open to very much question, and, literally, is only conjectural; so that the 25th December must be taken purely as the day on which His birth is celebrated, and not as His absolute natal day. In this matter we can only follow the traditions of the Church, and tradition alone has little value. In the second and early third centuries of our æra, we only know that the festivals, other than Sundays and days set apart for the remembrance of particular martyrs, were the Passover, Pentecost, and the Epiphany, the baptism or manifestation of our Lord, when came "a voice from Heaven saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased." This seems always to have been fixed for the 6th of January, and with it was incorporated the commemoration of His birth. Titus Flavius Clemens, generally known as Clemens of Alexandria, lived exactly at this time, and was a contemporary of Origen. He speaks plainly on the subject, and shows the uncertainty, even at that early epoch of Christianity, of fixing the date: "There are those who, with an over-busy curiosity, attempt to fix not only the year, but the date of our Saviour's birth, who, they say, was born in the twenty-eighth year of Augustus, on the 25th of the month Pachon," i.e. the 20th of May. And in another place he says: "Some say that He was born on the 24th or 25th of the month Pharmuthi," which would be the 19th or 20th of April.
