Book American Frontiers

Download or read book American Frontiers written by Joel Snyder and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "One of the first photographers to cross the American frontier, Timothy H. O'Sullivan met the challenge of the West's grandeur and mystery by creating landscapes of compelling subtlety and original vision. From 1867 to 1874, as photographer to the King and Wheeler geological surveys, O'Sullivan traveled thousands of miles, from San Francisco to Colorado, from the Arizona Indian territory to Idaho's Snake River. He made more than one thousand photographs in the field, ranging from scenes of the deserts of Nevada and California, the heights of the Humboldt Mountains, and torrential waters of Shoshone Falls to pictures taken inside mines illuminated by magnesium flares. O'Sullivan's western photographs represent not only an explorer's first encounter with a startling new terrain, but also an artist's vision of the power of Nature, at once threatening and awesome ... American Frontiers includes more than 80 photographs, many of them published here for the first time. Other O'Sullivan negatives, never printed in the photographer's lifetime, are represented in prints made especially for this book at the National Archives in Washington, D.C. by the original albumen process. In Joel Snyder's insightful text reveals new research that sheds light on this little known but important figure and relates O'Sullivan's work to theories of esthetics and American culture of the nineteenth century"--Jacket flap.

Book Clarence John Laughlin

Download or read book Clarence John Laughlin written by Keith F. Davis and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume provides a much-needed reassessment of the life and work of Clarence John Laughlin (1905-1985). Born in Lake Charles, Louisiana, Laughlin lived most of his life in New Orleans, He discovered the literature of Baudelaire and the French Symbolists in the mid-1920s and began writing poetry and Gothic fiction at that time. In 1934, influenced by the work of Stieglitz, Strand, Weston, Man Ray, and Atget, Laughlin took up photography. Devoted to the documentation of historic buildings and artifacts, Laughlin was at the same time committed to a highly personal application of photography to evoke the underlying mystery of the world. He used multiple exposures, theatrical arrangements, and lengthy captions to bridge the gap between the visible world and an allusive, metaphorical realm of intuition and fantasy. Laughlin's work seems particularly relevant today. The last decade of American photography has been characterized by an artistic focus on issues of theatricality, the tension between photographic truth and invention, and the linkage between world and pictures.

In the 20 years since Journey, Frassanito has uncovered many more never-before published photos of people and places significant to Gettysburg's early history as well as new information on commonly known photos, presented in a clear format. One of the greatest battlefields in the world was documented when the field still looked essentially as it did at the time of the battle. Frassanito focuses on the period between 1859 and 1869, a period that begins with the earliest outdoor photograph known to have been recorded in the town, through the photographic series which comprised the last substantial postwar coverage of the field itself before the memorial craze adorned the area with monuments and avenues. - Publisher.
