Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Leo Cherne's life brimmed with paradox and improbability. He was born in the Bronx to a poor, immigrant, Jewish family, and yet rose to the heights of economic and political power in WASP America. A successful entrepreneur and an unofficial advisor to nine presidents, he nevertheless devoted the majority of his time to humanitarian causes, particularly the International Rescue Committee, which he chaired for forty years. From Hungary to Cuba to Cambodia, Cherne traveled across the globe on behalf of political refugees. A consummate networker, he also had the uncanny ability to attract and cultivate talented people before they became prominent, including such figures as John F. Kennedy, Ronald Reagan, Patrick Moynihan, Claiborne Pell, Tom Dooley, William Casey, John Whitehead, and Henry A. Kissinger. He was presented with the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1984 by Ronald Reagan, who proclaimed that although never elected to governmental office, Leo Cherne had more influence on American foreign policy than most elected officials. The underlying theme of his life was that one person, without family contacts or wealthy connections, could make a difference worldwide in political and humanitarian affairs.

She shares stories about eating a jar of peanut butter without choking to death. Stories about her thighs rubbing together. Stories of living a fantasy where she would marry Leo DiCaprio and win an Oscar. When Tom Kolczyskrenski got his discharge papers from the Air Force, he decided to look up his old pals¾and the world would never be the same. At one time, the oddly mismatched trio had been roommates, then they'd gone their separate ways. Tom, for lack of money, enlisted in the Air Force to learn electronics. The other two had finished college, lan McTavish going into mechanical engineering and a job with GM, and Jim Hasenpfeffer into behavioral science, leading to his having gotten a Department of Defense grant to¾this is serious stuff, now¾study social interactions in motorcycle gangs. So the three set out to be their own motorcycle gang. But these easy riders had barely begun to closely observe their own interactions when they ran across a strange perfectly hemispherical hole in the ground where a house used to be, with everything that had been in the sphere of influence slowly materializing in bits and pieces in the surrounding area. And they found the plans for the machine that had done this, and were sure they could duplicate it and get rich. But before long they would be wishing they had kept on being the three musketeers on bikes, instead of the three stooges of time travel.... • Author : Michael A. Meyer

Download or read book Rabbi Leo Baeck written by Michael A. Meyer and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2020-11-20 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rabbi, educator, intellectual, and community leader, Leo Baeck (1873-1956) was one of the most important Jewish figures of prewar Germany. The publication of his 1905 Das Wesen des Judentums (The Essence of Judaism) established him as a major voice for liberal Judaism. He served as a chaplain to the German army during the First World War and in the years following, resisting the call of political Zionism, he expressed his commitment to the belief in a vibrant place for Jews in a new Germany. This hope was dashed with the rise of Nazism, and from 1933 on, and continuing even after his deportation to Theresienstadt, he worked tirelessly in his capacity as a leader of the German Jewish community to offer his coreligionists whatever practical, intellectual, and spiritual support remained possible. While others after the war worked to rebuild German Jewish life from the ashes, a disillusioned Baeck pronounced the effort misguided and spent the rest of his life in England. Yet his name is perhaps best-known today from the Leo Baeck Institutes in New York, London, Berlin, and Jerusalem dedicated to the preservation of the cultural heritage of German-speaking Jewry. Michael A. Meyer has written a biography that gives equal consideration to Leo Baeck's place as a courageous community leader and as one of the most significant Jewish religious thinkers of the twentieth century, comparable to such better-known figures as Martin Buber, Franz Rosenzweig, and Abraham Joshua Heschel. According to Meyer, to understand Baeck fully, one must probe not only his thought and public activity but also his personality. Generally described as gentle and kind, he could also be combative when necessary, and a streak of puritanism and an outsized veneration for martyrdom ran through his psychological makeup. Drawing on a broad variety of sources, some coming to light only in recent years, but especially turning to Baeck's own writings, Meyer presents a complex and nuanced image of one of the most noteworthy personalities in the Jewish history of our age.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Leo's Misadventures is about Leo McGregor, a twenty-year-old surfer dude from Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, who won a $156 million lottery. He decided to get out of town for a while to get away from the locals who badgered him for a handout. He hitchhiked across America to Santa Monica, California, via Route 66. After a thirty-nine-day journey across the country, Leo ended up at the Santa Monica Pier with a journal full of stories and a girlfriend named Abby Walker. When he left Kitty Hawk, he had no idea what he would do when he arrived at his destination. Would he turn around and head back east or stick around on the West Coast for a while? Leo and Abby rented a beach house on the Pacific Ocean near the famous pier to give them time to figure things out. On his journey, Leo had given a lot of thought about the best way to use the money he had won. After much thought and discussion with Abby, he decided to start a charitable foundation. He and Abby found a nice office space near the pier and leased it for one year. Leo needed an attorney and found one in Santa Monica named Jess who helped him set up the foundation. With his charitable foundation up and running, Leo needed someone to run the day-to-day operations. He found Freddy, who lived in Malibu with his adopted parents, to fill this critical position. Leo, Abby, Jess, and Freddy became good friends and enjoyed themselves on the coast when they weren't working. Eventually, Leo bought an apartment building on the beach and converted it into a surf shop. He hired Brody, a local surf builder, to run the shop and use locals to help create the boards. Any profits would be donated to charity. With everything running smoothly, Leo began to ponder the need for similar charities in other parts of the country--or internationally.
