Book Time Resolved Spectral Optical Breast Tomography

Download or read book Time Resolved Spectral Optical Breast Tomography written by and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The research carried out during the current reporting period involved: (a) developing and enhancing the 3D tomographic image reconstruction algorithm to use a L-curve method guided by the signal-to-noise ratio of the data set to determine the regularization parameter; (b) developing and enhancing the 3D tomographic image reconstruction algorithm to make use of spectral information in multiple wavelength measurements; (c) developing a novel information theory approach to analyze the data set for image reconstruction; and (d) extending the range of applicability of the linear inversion scheme for optical imaging using a nonlinear correction factor for inhomogeneities strong in absorption. The L-curve method guided by the signal-to-noise ratio of the data set and the information theory approach using independent component analysis to analyze the data set were found to improve the quality of image reconstruction. The correction for the nonlinear effect of the multiple passages of an absorption site by light was shown to be essential in optical imaging to characterize properly inhomogeneities strong in absorption. The theoretical formalism and computer algorithm for 3D tomographic image reconstruction shows with simulated data and preliminary experimental data the potential to provide fast 3D images of the scattering and absorption objects at various depths in turbid media.

Book Time Resolved and Spectroscopic Three Dimensional Optical Breast Tomography

Download or read book Time Resolved and Spectroscopic Three Dimensional Optical Breast Tomography written by and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 93 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The goal of the research project, "Time-Resolved and Spectroscopic Three-Dimensional Optical Breast Tomography," was to develop a safe and affordable breast cancer detection modality that uses noninvasive near-infrared (NIR) light for imaging and diagnosing tumors in human breast with high resolution and specificity. In order to realize that goal three different approaches were developed. These are Optical Tomography using Independent Component Analysis (OPTICA), Round Trip Matrix (RTM) approach, and Center of Intensity Time Gated Imaging (CITGI). OPTICA is the most developed of these approaches. It has been demonstrated that OPTICA can detect, obtain the threedimensional location information and cross-section images of small absorbing, scattering, and fluorescent targets in model media, and tumor(s) in realistic model breast with considerable accuracy. Further accomplishments include development of a forward model for determining the backscattered polarized light intensity distribution, and initial development of a technique to determine scattering coefficient, absorption coefficient, and anisotropy factor (g) of breast tissue specimens. Besides detection and localization of tumors in breast, these results may have potential applications in optical biopsy, and lumpectomy. The graduate student supported by the project received his Ph. D., adding another scientist to the ongoing fight against breast cancer.

Book New Horizons in Time Domain Diffuse Optical Spectroscopy and Imaging

Download or read book New Horizons in Time Domain Diffuse Optical Spectroscopy and Imaging written by Yoko Hoshi and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2020-06-23 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jöbsis was the first to describe the in vivo application of near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS), also called diffuse optical spectroscopy (DOS). NIRS was originally designed for the clinical monitoring of tissue oxygenation, and today it has also become a useful tool for neuroimaging studies (functional near-infrared spectroscopy, fNIRS). However, difficulties in the selective and quantitative measurements of tissue hemoglobin (Hb), which have been central in the NIRS field for over 40 years, remain to be solved. To overcome these problems, time-domain (TD) and frequency-domain (FD) measurements have been tried. Presently, a wide range of NIRS instruments are available, including commonly available commercial instruments for continuous wave (CW) measurements, based on the modified Beer–Lambert law (steady-state domain measurements). Among these measurements, the TD measurement is the most promising approach, although compared with CW and FD measurements, TD measurements are less common, due to the need for large and expensive instruments with poor temporal resolution and limited dynamic range. However, thanks to technological developments, TD measurements are increasingly being used in research, and also in various clinical settings. This Special Issue highlights issues at the cutting edge of TD DOS and diffuse optical tomography (DOT). It covers all aspects related to TD measurements, including advances in hardware, methodology, the theory of light propagation, and clinical applications.

Download or read book Mammography and Beyond written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2001-07-23 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Each year more than 180,000 new cases of breast cancer are diagnosed in women in the U.S. If cancer is detected when small and local, treatment options are less dangerous, intrusive, and costly-and more likely to lead to a cure. Yet those simple facts belie the complexity of developing and disseminating acceptable techniques for breast cancer diagnosis. Even the most exciting new technologies remain clouded with uncertainty. Mammography and Beyond provides a comprehensive and up-to-date perspective on the state of breast cancer screening and diagnosis and recommends steps for developing the most reliable breast cancer detection methods possible. This book reviews the dramatic expansion of breast cancer awareness and screening, examining the capabilities and limitations of current and emerging technologies for breast cancer detection and their effectiveness at actually reducing deaths. The committee discusses issues including national policy toward breast cancer detection, roles of public and private agencies, problems in determining the success of a technique, availability of detection methods to specific populations of women, women's experience during the detection process, cost-benefit analyses, and more. Examining current practices and specifying research and other needs, Mammography and Beyond will be an indispensable resource to policy makers, public health officials, medical practitioners, researchers, women's health advocates, and concerned women and their families.

Book Emerging Imaging Technologies in Medicine

Download or read book Emerging Imaging Technologies in Medicine written by Mark A. Anastasio and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 365 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the discovery of x-rays in 1895 through the emergence of computed tomography (CT) in the 1970s and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in the 1980s, non-invasive imaging has revolutionized the practice of medicine. While these technologies have thoroughly penetrated clinical practice, scientists continue to develop novel approaches that promise to push imaging into entirely new clinical realms, while addressing the issues of dose, sensitivity, or specificity that limit existing imaging approaches. Emerging Imaging Technologies in Medicine surveys a number of emerging technologies that have the promise to find routine clinical use in the near- (less than five years), mid- (five to ten years) and long-term (more than ten years) time frames. Each chapter provides a detailed discussion of the associated physics and technology, and addresses improvements in terms of dose, sensitivity, and specificity, which are limitations of current imaging approaches. In particular, the book focuses on modalities with clinical potential rather than those likely to have an impact mainly in preclinical animal imaging. The last ten years have been a period of fervent creativity and progress in imaging technology, with improvements in computational power, nanofabrication, and laser and detector technology leading to major new developments in phase-contrast imaging, photoacoustic imaging, and optical imaging.

Book Oxygen Transport to Tissue XVI

Download or read book Oxygen Transport to Tissue XVI written by Michael C. Hogan and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 627 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since its inception in 1973, The International Society on Oxygen Transport to Tissue (ISOTT) has provided a unique forum to facilitate and encourage scientific interaction and debate. Welcoming scientists and clinicians from a broad spectrum of disciplines, each with their own particular skills and expertise, ISOTT unites them under the common theme of oxygen transport. The successful blend of scientific presentations and informal discussion which characterizes ISOTT is epitomized best by the many fundamental discoveries and technical advancements which it has spawned. The breadth and strengths of The Society's scientific base promotes the rapid progression of ideas from theoretical concepts to rigorous scientific testing and often, ultimately to the clinical arena. Each publication of the ISOTT proceedings has been recognized by Science Citation Index listing and the papers frequently establish scientific precedents and become considered as standard works in their respective fields. The 21st ISOTT Meeting was held in San Diego from August 14th through August 18th, 1993. The San Diego Meeting attracted about 150 registrants and 40 accompanying persons. Ten state-of-the-art lectures were presented by international experts in ~ transport and there were in addition two symposia -one dealing with assessment of tissue hypoxia and the other with functional heterogeneity in different organ systems. There were 100 free communications, consisting of posters accompanied by an abbreviated oral summary. All manuscripts were reviewed by the Editors for form and content, but as is customary for the ISOTT proceedings, rigorous scientific peer review was not undertaken.
