Book excerpt: Forget minor hazards like nuclear bombs. The discovery of time travel means that everything we know, anyone we know, might not only vanish, but never even have existed. Against that possibility stand the men and women of the Time Patrol, dedicated to preserving the history they know and protecting the future from fanatics, terrorists, and would-be dictators who would remold the shape of reality to suit their own purposes. But Manse Everard, the Patrol's finest temporal trouble-shooter, bears a heavy burden. The fabric of history is stained with human blood and suffering which he cannot, must not do anything to alleviate, lest his tampering bring disastrous alterations in future time. Everard must leave the horrors of the past in place, lest his tampering-or that of the Patrol's opponents, the Exaltationists-erase all hope of a better future, and instead bring about a future filled with greater horrors than any recorded by past history at its darkest and most foul.

Book excerpt: Discover the “extraordinary” (The Washington Post) debut novel that “announces the arrival of a literary supernova” (The New York Times Book Review),“a drama of childhood that is as wild as it is intimate” (Chigozie Obioma). WINNER OF THE EDGAR® AWARD • LONGLISTED FOR THE WOMEN’S PRIZE • NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY The New York Times Book Review • Time • The Washington Post • NPR • The Guardian • Library Journal In a sprawling Indian city, a boy ventures into its most dangerous corners to find his missing classmate. . . . Through market lanes crammed with too many people, dogs, and rickshaws, past stalls that smell of cardamom and sizzling oil, below a smoggy sky that doesn’t let through a single blade of sunlight, and all the way at the end of the Purple metro line lies a jumble of tin-roofed homes where nine-year-old Jai lives with his family. From his doorway, he can spot the glittering lights of the city’s fancy high-rises, and though his mother works as a maid in one, to him they seem a thousand miles away. Djinn Patrol on the Purple Line plunges readers deep into this neighborhood to trace the unfolding of a tragedy through the eyes of a child as he has his first perilous collisions with an unjust and complicated wider world. Jai drools outside sweet shops, watches too many reality police shows, and considers himself to be smarter than his friends Pari (though she gets the best grades) and Faiz (though Faiz has an actual job). When a classmate goes missing, Jai decides to use the crime-solving skills he has picked up from TV to find him. He asks Pari and Faiz to be his assistants, and together they draw up lists of people to interview and places to visit. But what begins as a game turns sinister as other children start disappearing from their neighborhood. Jai, Pari, and Faiz have to confront terrified parents, an indifferent police force, and rumors of soul-snatching djinns. As the disappearances edge ever closer to home, the lives of Jai and his friends will never be the same again. Drawing on real incidents and a spate of disappearances in metropolitan India, Djinn Patrol on the Purple Line is extraordinarily moving, flawlessly imagined, and a triumph of suspense. It captures the fierce warmth, resilience, and bravery that can emerge in times of trouble and carries the reader headlong into a community that, once encountered, is impossible to forget.

Download or read book Traditional Preventive Patrol written by University City Science Center and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Synopsis of the findings of a comprehensive review of the state-of-the-art in traditional preventive patrol operational activities of uniformed officers assigned to general patrol duties. The five principal and most commonly accepted goals of patrol -- deterrence, apprehension, provision of non-crime related services, provision of a sense of community security and satisfaction with the police, and recovery of stolen goods -- are identified, and each is examined in terms of the hypotheses and assumptions which link specific patrol activities, tactics, and strategies to goal attainment. Attention is devoted to determining the validity of these hypotheses and assumptions and to the type and quality of the measures of effectiveness which are used to gauge the contribution of various patrol practices to the overall aims of patrol. The report then considers the inputs and processes which comprise preventive patrol: characteristics of patrol personnel, modes of transportation, deployment practices, supervision, and in-service task assignments. Prescriptive statements based on this assessment of the current state of knowledge about patrol conclude this report. The final chapter discusses aspects of patrol most in need of further study and offers some suggestions and lessons concerning the execution of research on patrol. The information and conclusions presented in this report were developed from a review of available literature, reports of projects supported by LEAA and the police foundation, direct contact with all LEAA regional offices, discussions with state planning agency representatives, a survey of some 300 police and sheriffs' departments throughout the country, and 26 site visits.
