Book excerpt: John Dunn never expected that his summer job as a caddie at the local course in Connecticut might turn into something more. The lifers who plied the loops were an ensemble of misfits and degenerates who made the caddie yard look more like a gambling hall than a country club. But Dunn came of age in those yards and on those courses, and the magnetism of the game and the lifestyle proved irresistible. One adventure after another kept him coming back summer after summer, until he found himself migrating with the seasons, looping at some of the most exquisite and exclusive golf locations in the world. Dunn crisscrossed the country on his own big loop, working inside the privet hedges while camping on the mountains, following the back roads and stumbling across unexpected moments of profound natural beauty, and embracing the freedom of what he calls the last vagabond existence in America, all while trying to decide whether to quit the loop and get a real job. Maybe next season...

Book The Never Ending End of the World

Download or read book The Never Ending End of the World written by Ann Christy and published by Campfire Publishing LLC. This book was released on 2023-08-08 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Station Eleven meets The Last of Us in this post-apocalyptic sci-fi epic from USA Today and Wall Street Journal best-selling author Ann Christy. Coco Wells hasn’t seen another living person since she was a teenager. All of Manhattan is reliving the same few seconds, minutes, or hours on a loop… and they have been for years. Everything looks normal from a distance, but up close it’s a nightmare. Coco is a survivor. She scavenges for food, reads, and—most importantly—avoids loopers. They ignore her, but only as long as she’s silent. She’s learned the painful lesson that a broken loop can mean death. After eight years of solitude, learning to survive and precisely timing the loops that weave around the city, Coco wonders what lies beyond New York and what has become of the rest of the world. As she leaves home for the first time, one question haunts her above all: “Am I the only one left?” Speculative sci-fi, dystopian apocalypse, and scientific mystery coalesce into The Never-Ending End of the World — a gripping tale of survival, hope, and love from retired Naval Officer Ann Christy.

Book Top Tier Leadership

Download or read book Top Tier Leadership written by Rob Manning and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2020-01-07 with total page 149 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Top Tier Leadership, Rob Manning connects Scripture and life experiences to develop a top-tier leadership pathway. He weaves stories of leadership successes—and failures—from the top-tier poles of Carolina tobacco barns to the top tiers of utility boardrooms. From failing Electromagnetic Fields at North Carolina State University to appearing before the Senate Energy Committee as an EMP expert forty years later. Manning connects these stories with Scripture as he demonstrates the value of leading with skills from God’s leadership manual, the Holy Bible. Leaders walking with God demonstrate leadership consistency, competency, and vision. People, even those who don’t believe, are drawn to godly leaders. Top Tier Leadership is a thirty-day walk through three imperatives: Do the right thing. Know the right thing to do. Find joy in all you do. These three imperatives anchor twenty-seven, biblically based, leadership attributes that define Christian leaders. Rob Manning builds his leadership case with over seventy scriptural references. Use Top Tier Leadership to link your Christian walk with your leadership quest. Discover how to win followers as you consistently adhere to the principles of the Bible amidst the complexities of secular business. Be a faith-based leader in any and every circumstance.

Book Digitalizing the Global Text

Download or read book Digitalizing the Global Text written by Paul Allen Miller and published by Univ of South Carolina Press. This book was released on 2020-01-07 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A few years ago globalism seemed to be both a known and inexorable phenomenon. With the end of the Cold War, the opening of the Chinese economy, and the ascendancy of digital technology, the prospect of a unified flow of goods and services and of people and ideas seemed unstoppable. Political theorists such as Francis Fukuyama proclaimed that we had reached "the end of history." Yes, there were pockets of resistance and reaction, but these, we were told, would be swept away in a relentless tide of free markets and global integration that would bring Hollywood, digital finance, and fast food to all. Religious fundamentalism, nationalism, and traditional sexual identities would melt away before the forces of "modernity" and empire. A relentless, technocratic rationality would sweep all in its wake, bringing a neoliberal utopia of free markets, free speech, and increasing productivity. Nonetheless, as we have begun to experience the backlash against a global world founded on digital fungibility, the perils of appeals to nationalism, identity, and authenticity have become only too apparent. The collapse of Soviet Communism left an ideological vacuum that offered no recognized place from which to oppose global capitalism. What is the alternative? The anxieties and resentments produced by this new world order among those left behind are often manifested in assertions of xenophobia and particularity. This is what it supposedly means to be really American, truly Muslim, properly Chinese. The "other" is coming to take what is ours, and we must "defend" ourselves. Digitalizing the Global Text is a collection of essays by an international group of scholars situated squarely at this nexus of forces. Together these writers examine how literature, culture, and philosophy in the global and digital age both enable the creation of these simultaneously utopian and dystopian worlds and offer a resistance to them. A joint publication from the University of South Carolina Press and the National Taiwan University Press.

Book Sensory Integration and the Unity of Consciousness

Download or read book Sensory Integration and the Unity of Consciousness written by David Bennett and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2014-10-31 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Philosophers and cognitive scientists address the relationships among the senses and the connections between conscious experiences that form unified wholes. In this volume, cognitive scientists and philosophers examine two closely related aspects of mind and mental functioning: the relationships among the various senses and the links that connect different conscious experiences to form unified wholes. The contributors address a range of questions concerning how information from one sense influences the processing of information from the other senses and how unified states of consciousness emerge from the bonds that tie conscious experiences together. Sensory Integration and the Unity of Consciousness is the first book to address both of these topics, integrating scientific and philosophical concerns. A flood of recent work in both philosophy and perception science has challenged traditional conceptions of the sensory systems as operating in isolation. Contributors to the volume consider the ways in which perceptual contact with the world is or may be “multisensory,” discussing such subjects as the modeling of multisensory integration and philosophical aspects of sensory modalities. Recent years have seen a similar surge of interest in unity of consciousness. Contributors explore a range of questions on this topic, including the nature of that unity, the degree to which conscious experiences are unified, and the relationship between unified consciousness and the self. Contributors Tim Bayne, David J. Bennett, Berit Brogaard, Barry Dainton, Ophelia Deroy, Frederique de Vignemont, Marc Ernst, Richard Held, Christopher S. Hill, Geoffrey Lee, Kristan Marlow, Farid Masrour, Jennifer Matey, Casey O'Callaghan, Cesare V. Parise, Kevin Rice, Elizabeth Schechter, Pawan Sinha, Julia Trommershaeuser, Loes C.
