Book The Use of Satellite observed Cloud Patterns in Northern Hemisphere 500 mb Numerical Analysis

Download or read book The Use of Satellite observed Cloud Patterns in Northern Hemisphere 500 mb Numerical Analysis written by Roland E. Nagle and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A quasi-objective method for deriving 500-mb geopotential heights with the aid of satellite cloud observations is presented. The method uses satellite-observed cloud patterns in conjunction with a forecast 500-mb height field which is separated into additive short- and long-wave component fields. Empirical relationships between the cloud patterns and the short-wave component field are used to modify the pattern of the latter, and regression equations are used to specify extrema values. The 500-mb heights are retrieved by the direct addition of the modified short-wavelength field to the long-wavelength field. Procedures for using this method operationally are presented, and results of real-time modifications can contribute to significant improvements in the analysis.

Book Evaluation of a Balanced 300 mb Height Analysis as a Reference Level for Satellite derived Soundings

Download or read book Evaluation of a Balanced 300 mb Height Analysis as a Reference Level for Satellite derived Soundings written by Albert Thomasell and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A technique is developed and evaluated for using wind observations through application of the balance equation to improve the accuracy of objective height analysis in regions between height observations to provide reliable reference heights for satellite derived soundings. At upper levels (near 300 mb), numerous aircraft winds and satellite observed cloud vector winds are available for this purpose. In regions of moderate size, where the height analysis is determined primarily by winds and where the winds are deemed sufficiently dense and accurate, the technique produces interpolated height values with an estimated rms error of 30 m or less 80 to 85% of the time. Where these conditions are met it is concluded that the technique provides reliable reference heights.

Book An Intercomparison of Meteorological Parameters Derived from Radiosonde and Satellite Vertical Temperature Cross Sections

Download or read book An Intercomparison of Meteorological Parameters Derived from Radiosonde and Satellite Vertical Temperature Cross Sections written by William Lee Smith and published by . This book was released on 1974 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vertical cross-sections of temperature between 60°S and 50°N for Apr. 6, 1973, are derived from (a) radiosonde, (b) Nimbus-5 Infrared Temperature Profile Radiometer, Nimbus-E Microwave Spectrometer and Selective Chopper Radiometer, and (c) NOAA-2 Vertical Temperature Profile Radiometer (VTPR) data. Comparisons are made of the level temperatures and latitudinal temperature gradients, geopotential heights and the latitudinal gradients, and geostrophic winds inferred from the radiosonde and satellite cross-sections. The results of this limited case study indicate: 1. Temperature accuracies for the lower troposphere obtained with Nimbus-5 sounding data are superior to those achieved with the NOAA-2 VTPR data. 2. The agreement between latitudinal gradients of temperature derived from satellite data and radiosonde observations is much better than the agreement between level temperatures obtained from satellite and radiosonde observations. 3. The geostrophic wind distribution of jet streams derived from satellite data possesses more character and intensity than does the geostrophic wind distribution obtained from radiosonde data.

Book The Airborne ITPR Brassboard Experiment

Download or read book The Airborne ITPR Brassboard Experiment written by William L. Smith and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A preprototype (brassboard model) Infrared Temperature Profile Radiometer (ITPR) was tested on the NASA Convair-990 aircraft expedition during June 1970. The objectives of the airborne ITPR experiment were to obtain data to test various techniques planned for deriving temperature soundings from spaceborne ITPR measurements and to specify the transmission characteristics of the atmosphere and clouds. This paper describes the instrument and shows various results obtained from the airborne measurements.

Book Satellite Infrared Soundings from NOAA Spacecraft

Download or read book Satellite Infrared Soundings from NOAA Spacecraft written by L. M. McMillin and published by . This book was released on 1973 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Data are currently being received from a Vertical Temperature Profile Radiometer (VTPR) aboard the NOAA 2 spacecraft to produce operational atmospheric soundings of temperature and humidity on a global scale. This report describes the VTPR instrument, its calibration, the procedure to obtain "clear radiances" from cloud-contaminated radiance measurements, retrieval techniques used to obtain temperature and humidity profiles from "clear radiances", the quality checks performed on the profiles, and the various forms in which data are available to potential users.
