Book Tristram Shandy and A Sentimental Journey

Download or read book Tristram Shandy and A Sentimental Journey written by Laurence Sterne and published by Modern Library. This book was released on 1999-02-10 with total page 752 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tristram Shandy provoked a literary sensation when it first appeared in a series of installments between 1759 and 1767. The ribald, high-spirited book prompted Diderot to hail Sterne as 'the English Rabelais.' An ingeniously structured novel (about writing a novel) that fascinates like a verbal game of chess, Tristram Shandy is both a joyful celebration of the infinite possibilities of the art of fiction and a wry demonstration of its limitations. Many view this picaresque masterpiece as the precursor of the modern novel. A Sentimental Journey, which came out in 1768, begins as a travelogue. Yet it ends as a treasury of portraits, sketches, and philosophical musings, for as Virginia Woolf observed: 'A Sentimental Journey, for all its levity and wit, is based upon something fundamentally philosophic--the philosophy of pleasure.'

Book Time in Tristram Shandy

Download or read book Time in Tristram Shandy written by Markus Widmer and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2008-11 with total page 29 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Essay from the year 1998 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 1 (A), University of Aberdeen (English Department), course: Tristram Shandy, 4 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: Metafiction, according to Patricia Waugh, consists of 'the construction of a fictional illusion (as in traditional realism) and the laying bare of that illusion'. Tristram Shandy, I will argue in this essay, undermines fictional illusion by foregrounding 'the most fundamental set of all narrative conventions: those concerning the representations of time' (Waugh 70). I will exemplify this by trying to apply a conventional set of narratological terms to Tristram Shandy. I will show that these terms, which are based on conventional narratives, are neither exhaustive nor distinctive when one tries to use them for Tristram Shandy. Narrative fiction, Rimmon-Kenan states, has three main aspects: story, text and narration: 'Story' designates the narrated events, abstracted from their disposition in the text and reconstructed in their chronological order, together with the participants in these events. Whereas 'story' is a succession of events, 'text' is a spoken or written discourse which undertakes their telling. ... Time is essential for all of these three aspects, as will become clear in my discussion. Time in itself, following Rimmon-Kenan, can be viewed in three respects: order, duration, and frequency (p. 46). I will focus on the first two aspects since they are more essential to the novel than frequency.4 Finally, I will discuss whether, after my discussion of Tristram Shandy's time structure, one can conclude that the novel is a metafiction according to Waugh's definition of the term.

Book Camp Austen

Download or read book Camp Austen written by Ted Scheinman and published by FSG Originals. This book was released on 2018-03-06 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Ted Scheinman spent his childhood eating Yorkshire pudding, singing in an Anglican choir, and watching Laurence Olivier as Mr. Darcy. As the son of a devoted Jane Austen scholar, this seemed normal. Despite his attempts to leave his mother's world behind, he found himself in grad school organizing the first ever University of North Carolina Jane Austen Summer Camp, a weekend-long event that falls somewhere between an academic conference and superfan extravaganza. In Camp Austen, Scheinman tells the story of his indoctrination into this enthusiastic world, delivering a hilarious and poignant survey of one of the most enduring and passionate literary coteries in history. Combining clandestine journalism with frank memoir, and academic savvy with insider knowledge, Camp Austen is perhaps the most comprehensive study of Austen that can be read in a single sitting. Brimming with stockings, culinary etiquette, and scandalous dance partners, this is summer camp as you've never seen it before--back cover.

Book excerpt: The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman by Laurence Sterne is one of the best world humoristic books, the classics in its genre and the brightest example of so called “English humour”. It is difficult and ungrateful to retell the plot of this wonderful book. Just because the main hero is only born in the middle of the novel and in the end he turns five. The narration mainly consists of thoughts of the child’s father, stories of the guests that gathered in his house to greet the upcoming event, stories of the people the guests know that experienced the same situations and etc.… It’s accompanied with excellent humour that is unnoticed at first.

Book Narrative Form and Chaos Theory in Sterne Proust Woolf and Faulkner

Download or read book Narrative Form and Chaos Theory in Sterne Proust Woolf and Faulkner written by J. Parker and published by Springer. This book was released on 2007-09-03 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on the insights offered by contemporary chaos theory, Narrative Form and Chaos Theory explores how models of turbulent dynamical systems in the physical world parallel structures in certain kinds of narratives. By closely looking at Laurence Sterne's Tristram Shandy, Marcel Proust's In Search of Lost Time, Virginia Woolf's Mrs. Dalloway, and William Faulkner's Absalom, Absalom!, Parker demonstrates how these insights can be applied to the analysis of narrative structure and meaning. This innovative interdisciplinary work will appeal to scholars interested in narratology and in the connection between chaos theory and literature.

Book Laurence Sterne and the Eighteenth Century Book

Download or read book Laurence Sterne and the Eighteenth Century Book written by Helen Williams and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2021-04-01 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scrutinising Sterne's fiction through a book history lens, Helen Williams creates novel readings of his work based on meticulous examination of its material and bibliographical conditions. Alongside multiple editions and manuscripts of Sterne's own letters and works, a panorama of interdisciplinary sources are explored, including dance manuals, letter-writing handbooks, newspaper advertisements, medical pamphlets and disposable packaging. For the first time, this wealth of previously overlooked material is critically analysed in relation to the design history of Tristram Shandy, conceptualising the eighteenth-century novel as an artefact that developed in close conjunction with other media. In examining the complex interrelation between a period's literature and the print matter of everyday life, this study sheds new light on Sterne and eighteenth-century literature by re-defining the origins of his work and of the eighteenth-century novel more broadly, whilst introducing readers to diverse print cultural forms and their production histories.

Book Alice James

Download or read book Alice James written by Jean Strouse and published by New York Review of Books. This book was released on 2011-11-01 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Jameses are perhaps the most extraordinary and distinguished family in American intellectual life. Henry’s novels, celebrated as among the finest in the language, and William’s groundbreaking philosophical and psychological works, have won these brothers a permanent place at the center of the nation’s cultural firmament. Less well known is their enigmatic younger sister, Alice. As Jean Stouse’s generous, probing, and deeply imaginative biography shows, however, Alice James was a fascinating and exceptional figure in her own right. Tortured throughout her short life by an array of nervous disorders, constrained by social convention from achieving the worldly success she so desired, Alice nevertheless emerges from this remarkable book as a personality every bit as peculiar and engaging as her two famous brothers. “The moral and philosophical questions that Henry wrote up as fiction and William as science,” writes Strouse, “Alice simply lived.” With a psychological penetration and high eloquence that are altogether Jamesian, Strouse traces the formation of a unique identity, from Alice’s unconventional peripatetic childhood in continental Europe through her years of spinsterhood in the United Sates and later England. It was there that she began to keep her celebrated diary, full of fitting social observation and unblinking self-analysis. “I consider myself one of the most potent creations of my time,” she wrote to William, with characteristic tartness, towards the end of her life, “and though I may not have a group of Harvard students sitting at my feet drinking in psychic truth, I shall not tremble, I assure you, at the last trump.”

Book excerpt: " When I had fished my dinner, and drank the King of France’s health, to satisfy my mind that I bore him no spleen, but, on the contrary, high honour for the humanity of his temper,—I rose up an inch taller for the accommodation. No said I the Bourbon is by no means a cruel race: they may be misled, like other people; but there is a mildness in their blood. As I acknowledged this, I felt a suffusion of a finer kind upon my cheek—more warm and friendly to man, than what Burgundy (at least of two livres a bottle, which was such as I had been drinking) could have produced. Just God! said I, kicking my portmanteau aside, what is there in this world’s goods which should sharpen our spirits, and make so many kind- hearted brethren of us fall out so cruelly as we do by the way?"
