The possibility that attributions of causality and responsibility are distinct ways of perceiving events is considered. As a test for this possibility, subjects participated in an experimental simulation where they interacted as a team with a supposed opposing team. The opponent was simulated. Subjects were repeatedly instructed to attribute causality to those targets who had acted so that the 'current situation' had come about, no matter whether the outcome had been intended.
