Book The Local Discontinuous Galerkin Method for Time Dependent Convection Diffusion Systems

Download or read book The Local Discontinuous Galerkin Method for Time Dependent Convection Diffusion Systems written by Bernardo Cockburn and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this paper, we study the Local Discontinuous Galerkin methods for non-linear, time-dependent convection-diffusion systems. These methods are an extension of the Runge-Kutta Discontinuous Galerkin methods for purely hyperbolic systems to convection-diffusion systems and share with those methods their high parallelizability, their high-order formal accuracy, and their easy handling of complicated geometries, for convection dominated problems. It is proven that for scalar equations, the Local Discontinuous Galerkin methods are L2-stable in the nonlinear case. Moreover, in the linear case, it is shown that if polynomials of degree k are used, the methods are k-th order accurate for general triangulations; although this order of convergence is suboptimal, it is sharp for the LDG methods. Preliminary numerical examples displaying the performance of the method are shown.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph, entirely devoted to “Convection in Fluids”, presents a unified rational approach of various convective phenomena in fluids (mainly considered as a thermally perfect gas or an expansible liquid), where the main driving mechanism is the buoyancy force (Archimedean thrust) or temperature-dependent surface tension in homogeneities (Marangoni effect). Also, the general mathematical formulation (for instance, in the Bénard problem - heated from below) and the effect of free surface deformation are taken into account. In the case of atmospheric thermal convection, the Coriolis force and stratification effects are also considered. This volume gives a rational and analytical analysis of the above mentioned physical effects on the basis of the full unsteady Navier-Stokes and Fourier (NS-F) equations - for a Newtonian compressible viscous and heat-conducting fluid - coupled with the associated initials (at initial time), boundary (lower-at the solid plane) and free surface (upper-in contact with ambiant air) conditions. This, obviously, is not an easy but a necessary task if we have in mind a rational modelling process, and work within a numerically coherent simulation on a high speed computer.

Book New Perspectives on Stellar Pulsation and Pulsating Variable Stars

Download or read book New Perspectives on Stellar Pulsation and Pulsating Variable Stars written by James M. Nemec and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1993-10-21 with total page 474 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How can the interior of the Sun, white dwarfs and other stars be studied by stellar seismology? What can Doppler imaging tell us about high-degree pulsations? What impact are CCD and infrared observations having on extending the Cepheid and RR Lyrae distance scale? And how are other classes of pulsators providing independent checks of the distance scale? These and many other critical questions are answered in this timely review of the dramatic advances made in pulsating star research in the last decade. This survey collects together more than thirty comprehensive reviews and over one hundred summaries of research papers from the 139th IAU Colloquium, held in Victoria, British Columbia. Together these cover all aspects of recent developments in the field of variable star research and preview some of the exciting advances anticipated for the next decade. This volume provides an essential review for graduate students and researchers.

Book Stabilized Finite Element Methods for Time Dependent Convection diffusion Equations

Download or read book Stabilized Finite Element Methods for Time Dependent Convection diffusion Equations written by Onur Baysal and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this thesis, enriched finite element methods are presented for both steady and unsteady convection diffusion equations. For the unsteady case, we follow the method of lines approach that consists of first discretizing in space and then use some time integrator to solve the resulting system of ordinary differential equation. Discretization in time is performed by the generalized Euler finite difference scheme, while for the space discretization the streamline upwind Petrov-Galerkin (SUPG), the Residual free bubble (RFB), the more recent multiscale (MS) and specific combination of RFB with MS (MIX) methods are considered. To apply the RFB and the MS methods, the steady local problem, which is as complicated as the original steady equation, should be solved in each element. That requirement makes these methods quite expensive especially for two dimensional problems. In order to overcome that drawback the pseudo approximation techniques, which employ only a few nodes in each element, are used. Next, for the unsteady problem a proper adaptation recipe, including these approximations combined with the generalized Euler time discretization, is described. For piecewise linear finite element discretization on triangular grid, the SUPG method is used. Then we derive an efficient stability parameter by examining the relation of the RFB and the SUPG methods. Stability and convergence analysis of the SUPG method applied to the unsteady problem is obtained by extending the Burman's analysis techniques for the pure convection problem. We also suggest a novel operator splitting strategy for the transport equations with nonlinear reaction term. As a result two subproblems are obtained. One of which we may apply using the SUPG stabilization while the other equation can be solved analytically. Lastly, numerical experiments are presented to illustrate the good performance of the method.

Book Theory and Modeling of Rotating Fluids

Download or read book Theory and Modeling of Rotating Fluids written by Keke Zhang and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2017-05-23 with total page 541 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A systematic account of the theory and modelling of rotating fluids that highlights the remarkable advances in the area and brings researchers and postgraduate students in atmospheres, oceanography, geophysics, astrophysics and engineering to the frontiers of research. Sufficient mathematical and numerical detail is provided in a variety of geometries such that the analysis and results can be readily reproduced, and many numerical tables are included to enable readers to compare or benchmark their own calculations. Traditionally, there are two disjointed topics in rotating fluids: convective fluid motion driven by buoyancy, discussed by Chandrasekhar (1961), and inertial waves and precession-driven flow, described by Greenspan (1968). Now, for the first time in book form, a unified theory is presented for three topics - thermal convection, inertial waves and precession-driven flow - to demonstrate that these seemingly complicated, and previously disconnected, problems become mathematically simple in the framework of an asymptotic approach that incorporates the essential characteristics of rotating fluids.
