Book The Timber Pile Experiment in Swelling Clay

Download or read book The Timber Pile Experiment in Swelling Clay written by D. A. Cameron and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Firstly, small-diameter timber piles were driven into an initially dry expansive soil site consisting of residual Quaternary basaltic clay interspersed with floaters. The effects of pile depth, load and bituminous pile coating on movements of free-standing piles were studied. After four years of monitoring pile behaviour, the short timber piles about 2.5 m deep were found to be effective in resisting seasonal ground movements at this experimental site. Secondly, a full-sized raised timber floor was built and loaded along its perimeter. Four different and independent piled-footing systems were used to support the floor as alternatives to conventional strip footings. Two years after construction, all footing systems had exceeded critical deflection tolerances. Although the piles had evidently performed well, the footing systems, of which they were a part, had failed. Recommendations are presented for improved footing designs.

Book Structural Properties of Timber Pile

Download or read book Structural Properties of Timber Pile written by RM. Armstrong and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 35 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Results of test programs with short pile sections and small clear specimens are reviewed to evaluate the influence of imperfections and preservative treatment on the strength properties of timber piles. Reduction factors developed from this review, available information on natural wood strength variations, and available information on the influence of load duration are used to evaluate the structural capacity of embedded timber piles under axial loading. Indicated allowable axial unit stresses for treated timber piles range from 3.8 MPa (550 psi) to 6.4 MPa (925 psi), depending on the extent of knots and treatment conditioning that are permitted in current (1978) timber pile standards.
