Book The Timber Supply of the United States Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Timber Supply of the United States Classic Reprint written by R. S. Kellogg and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Timber Supply of the United States The total quantity of wood cut to obtain the products listed in the table was not less than 20 billion cubic feet. Rapidly-as the population of the United States has increased, the lumber consumption has increased still more rapidly. In round num bers, and allowing for incomplete reports, the lumber cut in 1880 was 18 billion feet; in 1890, 24 billion feet, and in 1900, 35 billion feet. The increase in population from 1880 to 1900 was 52 per cent, but in lumber cut 94 pei cent. The United States is now using annually 400 board feet of lumber per capita while the average for Europe is but 60 feet per capita. Table 2 affords a better understanding of the vast amount of lumber used. This gives the lumber cut of the principal States since 1880. The figures for 1880, 1890, 1900, and 1905 are those compiled by the census; the total cut is estimated by assuming an average out between census dates. This brings the total cut since 1880 to more than 7 00 billion feet - a truly astonishing figure when we stop to consider it. This quantity of lumber would make a floor 1 inch thick over Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, and Delaware, or an area of square miles. Book People and Timber

Download or read book People and Timber written by United States Forest Service and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-30 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from People and Timber: A Review of America's Timber One of the principal reasons for the great expansion isthe sharp increase in our population. Our death rate has declined, our birth rate has zoomed. Ten years ago we had 140 million citizens; today we have over 160 million. Our population has doubled since 1900. Our Nation may have about 210 million people in 1975. And in the year 2000 - about 275 million. Our inherited abundance of timber is a major factor in the growth of our dynamic economy. Timber products account for about one - fourth of all the raw materials We use in manufacturing and building. More than 12 billion cubic feet of timber products are consumed yearly: Saw logs for lumber, pulpwood for paper, fuelwood, posts, poles, piling, and other logs and bolts from which products such as veneer and cooperage are made. The average American uses about 80 cubic feet of wood per year. Lumber is used in greater amounts than any other industrial timber product. Each one of us uses twice as much lumber as a Russian, four times as much as an Englishman, and six times as much as a Frenchman. Our use of paper, too, far exceeds that of any other country. Book Timber Resources for America s Future Classic Reprint

Download or read book Timber Resources for America s Future Classic Reprint written by Usda Forest Service and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-09-28 with total page 746 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Timber Resources for America's Future The report of the Timber Resource Review is in the nature of a State-of - the-union message by the Forest Service on our national timber supplies. This comprehensive appraisal of the timber situation in the United States was started early in 1952. About a year and a half was devoted to planning the project; a year to field surveys and collection of data; a year to compila tion, interpretation, and preparation of the pre liminary report; and another year and a half to review and revision of the preliminary report and preparation of this final report. The Timber Resource Review is the latest in a series of overall timber appraisals in which the Forest Service has shared. The most recent one prior to this study was in 1945. One of the unique features of the present undertaking is that it was planned and executed in the field with the wide spread collaboration of a great number of States, forest industries, and individuals. Although this has engendered some delays, they have been more than offset by better planning, by more intensive surveys than the Forest Service could have under taken by itself, and it is hoped by more widespread understanding and acceptance of the findings.
