Book Tilogos

Download or read book Tilogos written by Sherman P. Bastarache and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2012-04 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Language is so easily learned that children master it in the very early stages of life. The expression of self through language is based in innate instincts, but it must be learned. It can be as simple as adding blocks together to spell words; the only difference is that it consists of adding phonemes together. These phonemes are derived from grunts and calls and are strung together to form words, or Tilogos, which are combined into sound-clich?'s with definitive meaning. In order to understand the evolution of language from calls and cries to modern articulation, we must first understand how the most basic of guttural sounds was originally used to represent a species-recognizable concept in the earliest stages of interpersonal communication. From there we must strive to understand how these basic sounds are manipulated and strung together to create complex words with varying meaning, representative of anything from items in one's surroundings to intangible thoughts and emotions. At its heart, "Tilogos" explores the question of how human beings have developed the ability to use simple noises to represent the most complex aspects of our shared world.

Book Sextus Empiricus Neo Pyrrhonism

Download or read book Sextus Empiricus Neo Pyrrhonism written by Plínio Junqueira Smith and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-03-01 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a comprehensive interpretation of Sextus Empiricus based on his own view of what he calls the distinctive character of skepticism. It focuses on basic topics highlighted by this ancient philosopher concerning Pyrrhonism, a kind of skepticism named for Pyrrho: its concept, its principles, its reason, its criteria, its goals. In the first part, the author traces distinct phases in the life and philosophical development of a talented person, from the pre-philosophical phase where philosophy was perceived as the solution to life's disturbing anomalies, through his initial philosophical investigation in order to find truth where the basic experience is that of a huge disagreement between philosophers, to the final phase where he finally recognises that his experience is similar to that of the skeptical school and adheres to skepticism. The second part is devoted to explain the nature of his skepticism. It presents an original interpretation, for it claims that the central role in Sextus’ Neo-Pyrrhonism is played by a skeptical logos, a rationale or way of reasoning. This is what unifies and articulates the skeptical orientation. The skeptic goes on investigating truth, but in a new condition, for he is now tranquil, and he has a skeptical method of his own. He has also acquired a special ability in order to balance both sides of an opposition, which involves a number of different skills. Finally, the author examines the skeptical life generated by this philosophical experience where he lives a life without opinions and dogmas; it is an engaged life, deeply concerned with our everyday actions and values. Readers will gain a deeper insight into the philosophy of Pyrrhonism as presented by Sextus Empiricus, as well as understand the meaning of anomalía, zétesis, epokhé, ataraxía, and other important ideas of this philosophy.

Book Seeming Being in Plato s Rhetorical Theory

Download or read book Seeming Being in Plato s Rhetorical Theory written by Robin Reames and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2018-07-23 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The widespread understanding of language in the West is that it represents the world. This view, however, has not always been commonplace. In fact, it is a theory of language conceived by Plato, culminating in The Sophist. In that dialogue Plato introduced the idea of statements as being either true or false, where the distinction between falsity and truth rests on a deeper discrepancy between appearance and reality, or seeming and being. Robin Reames’s Seeming & Being in Plato’s Rhetorical Theory marks a shift in Plato scholarship. Reames argues that an appropriate understanding of rhetorical theory in Plato’s dialogues illuminates how he developed the technical vocabulary needed to construct the very distinctions between seeming and being that separate true from false speech. By engaging with three key movements of twentieth- and twenty-first-century Plato scholarship—the rise and subsequent marginalization of “orality and literacy theory,” Heidegger’s controversial critique of Platonist metaphysics, and the influence of literary or dramatic readings of the dialogues—Reames demonstrates how the development of Plato’s rhetorical theory across several of his dialogues (Gorgias, Phaedrus, Protagoras, Theaetetus, Cratylus, Republic, and Sophist) has been both neglected and misunderstood.

Book Computers Children and Classrooms

Download or read book Computers Children and Classrooms written by Hilda W. Carmichael and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 898 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study examined the creative uses of computers in elementary schools and their impact on student's confidence and self-esteem, student-student interaction, student-teacher interaction, male and female students, classroom management, the role of the teacher, special education, teacher training, teachers not involved in the study, and curricular areas such as computer literacy, learning Logo as a programming language, problem-solving and problem-creation, mathematics, oral communication, reading and writing, the arts, and values and the individual and society. Findings are based on intensive examinations of real classrooms over a 2-year period. A total of 433 students in 18 classrooms that involved 13 different teachers were studied; of these, 5 teachers and 40 students were involved in the study for 2 years. Classrooms had 1 to 5 computers over the entire school year, or students had access to a computer laboratory. Logo and word processing were studied extensively; the use of a graphics tablet and Musicland were explored for short periods. Findings indicate that the creative use of computers fosters the development of independent and original thinking and that an environment that encourages exploration leads to extensive social interaction among students; in addition, students become more willing to express, refine, or revise their ideas. A significantly greater proportion of students experienced an increase in their confidence and self-esteem if their teacher was able to give them autonomy over their learning. The impact on students' attention span and cognitive development in the special education classes was also significant. Appendices and selected references are provided. (Author/JB)

Book Studies in Gnosticism and Alexandrian Christianity

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The discovery of the Nag Hammadi Library (1945) has given an enormous impetus not only to the study of ancient Gnosticism but also to that of early Christianity in general. Most of the studies contained in this volume deal with mythological conceptions and theological ideas found in various Nag Hammadi writings. The gnostic views on the nature of God and on creation and salvation receive particular attention, ranging from Philo to the medieval Cathars. The Nag Hammadi Library also shed new light on the development of early Alexandrian Christianity and its theology. The book contains six studies which explicitly deal with these topics. This volume is of interest to students of Gnosticism, early Christianity and Graeco-Roman religious and philosophical ideas in general.

Download or read book Full English Breakfast written by Todd Wisti and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2001-07 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A full English breakfast is a morning meal served at many British bed & breakfasts. This meal has all the trimmings: coffee, tea, orange juice, fruit, cereal, eggs, sausages, bacon, toast, tomatoes, mushrooms, and a host of other offerings including orange marmalade and brown sauce. A ramble might be a wandering narrative, but it can also be a leisurely excursion, taking in the pleasures of the land and the peoples of the region and enjoying every minute of it (well, almost). In this trek through London, Cardiff, York, and Thirsk, you’ll encounter — along with the author and his brother, Bill — historical tourist sites, the London Underground, and public houses. Nods are given to The Beatles, Monty Python, James Herriot, and also to an impatient train car attendant, short-legged field trippers, Americans attempting to find some real food in London, as well as many other lively characters and situations. Whether you’ve been considering a trip to Britain, you’ve already visited Britain, you live in Britain, or you are content to relax in an armchair reading about Britain, Todd Wisti provides a healthy dosage of wry humor and sometimes misshapen adventures in Full English Breakfast. Foreword by Bill Wisti

Book Argument Realisation in Complex Predicates and Complex Events

Download or read book Argument Realisation in Complex Predicates and Complex Events written by Brian Nolan and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2017-01-26 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a comprehensive investigative study of argument realisation in complex predicates and complex events at the syntax-semantic interface across a wide variety of the world’s languages, ranging over languages such as German, Irish, Sicilian and Italian, Lithuanian, Estonian and other Finno-Ugric languages, Pitjantjatjara, Yankunytjatjara and Ngaanyatjarra from Australia’s Western Desert region, Japanese, Tepehua (Totonacan, Mexico), Cheyenne, Mexican Spanish, Boharic Coptic, and Persian. This volume examines the syntactic variation of complex events, complex predicates and multi-verb constructions within a single clause where the clause is view as representing a single event, studying their semantics and syntax within functional, cognitive and constructional frameworks, to arrive at a better understanding of their cross linguistic behaviour and how they resonate in syntax. These constructions manifest considerable variability in cross-linguistic comparisons of complex predicate formation. In European languages, for example, typically one of the verbs in a verb-verb construction highlights a phase of an underspecified event while the matrix verb specifies the actual event. In contrast, serial verbs require each verb to provide a sub-event dimension within a complex event that is viewed holistically as unitary in syntax. This book contributes to an understanding of complex events, complex predicates and multi-verb constructions across languages, their syntactic constructional patterns and argument realisation.

Book Causation Permission and Transfer

Download or read book Causation Permission and Transfer written by Brian Nolan and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2015-01-14 with total page 507 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a comprehensive investigative study of the argument realisation of the concepts of causative purpose, permit, let/allow and transfer in a broad cross-linguistic typologically diverse mix of languages with GIVE, GET, TAKE, PUT, and LET verbs. This volume stands as the first systematic exploration of these verbs and concepts as they occur in complex events and clauses. This book brings together scholars and researchers from a variety of functionally inspired theoretical backgrounds that have worked on these verbs within one language or from a cross-linguistic perspective. The objective is to understand the linguistic behaviour of the verbs and their inter-relationships within a contemporary cognitive-functional linguistic perspective. The languages represented include Irish, German, Slavic (West Slavic: Polish, Czech, Slovak and Sorbian and Western South Slavic: Slovenian and Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian), Germanic, Romance, Gan Chinese Yichun dialect, Māori, Bohairic Coptic, Shaowu Chinese, Hebrew, English, Lithuanian, Estonian, the Australian dialects Pitjantjatjara and Yankunytjatjara, Italian, and Persian. Topics discussed include argument structure and the encoding of arguments under causation, permission and transferverbs, their lexical semantics and event structure.

Book Universal Grammar in the Reconstruction of Ancient Languages

Download or read book Universal Grammar in the Reconstruction of Ancient Languages written by Katalin É. Kiss and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2011-12-22 with total page 533 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Philologists aiming to reconstruct the grammar of ancient languages face the problem that the available data always underdetermine grammar, and in the case of gaps, possible mistakes, and idiosyncracies there are no native speakers to consult. The authors of this volume overcome this difficulty by adopting the methodology that a child uses in the course of language acquisition: they interpret the data they have access to in terms of Universal Grammar (more precisely, in terms of a hypothetical model of UG). Their studies, discussing syntactic and morphosyntactic questions of Older Egyptian, Coptic, Sumerian, Akkadian, Biblical Hebrew, Classical Greek, Latin, and Classical Sanskrit, demonstrate that descriptive problems which have proved unsolvable for the traditional, inductive approach can be reduced to the interaction of regular operations and constraints of UG. The proposed analyses also bear on linguistic theory. They provide crucial new data and new generalizations concerning such basic questions of generative syntax as discourse-motivated movement operations, the correlation of movement and agreement, a shift from lexical case marking to structural case marking, the licensing of structural case in infinitival constructions, the structure of coordinate phrases, possessive constructions with an external possessor, and the role of event structure in syntax. In addition to confirming or refuting certain specific hypotheses, they also provide empirical evidence of the perhaps most basic tenet of generative theory, according to which UG is part of the genetic endowment of the human species - i.e., human languages do not "develop" parallel with the development of human civilization. Some of the languages examined in this volume were spoken as much as 5000 years old, still their grammars do not differ in any relevant respect from the grammars of languages spoken today.
