Book Imagination in German Romanticism

Download or read book Imagination in German Romanticism written by Jeanne Riou and published by Peter Lang Publishing. This book was released on 2004 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In German Romanticism, the imagination is the site of the encounter between the subject and its environment; this book examines that encounter. Dealing with both literary and philosophical texts, it argues that the Romantic imagination performs a critique of rationalism. In reflecting on the fragmentary, the Romantics require the reader to both imagine and to question this as a hermeneutic process. As such, they understand writing to be an experiment in memory, both individual and cultural. This book is a study of the writings of E.T.A. Hoffmann, Novalis, Tieck and also of the utopian project of Romanticism itself. Methodologically, it is informed by what Foucault termed the archaeological approach to discourse as well as by psychoanalysis and literary theory. Examining points of contact as well of divergence between Kantian epistemology and Romantic nature philosophy, it also highlights the correspondences between literature, philosophy and science. Above all, it treats Romanticism as an experiment in the portrayal of ambivalent modern identity.

Through a detailed and scholarly analysis of the major texts, the book explores the endurance of Benjamin's relationship to Romanticism, the residual presence of Romantic Goethean and H÷lderlinian motifs in Benjamin's subsequent writings and how Benjamin's understanding of the relationship between criticism and Romanticism can still play a vital role in contemporary philosophical and literary practice.Contributors: Andrew Benjamin, Josh Cohen, David Ferris, Beatrice Hanssen, Philippe Lacoue-Labarthe, Charlie Louth, Bettine Menke, Winfried Menninghaus, Anthony Phelan, Sigrid Weigel

Book The Crises of Language and Dead Signs in Ludwig Tieck s Prose Fiction

Download or read book The Crises of Language and Dead Signs in Ludwig Tieck s Prose Fiction written by William Crisman and published by Camden House. This book was released on 1996 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Critical account of the works of Ludwig Tieck, the German Romantic writer, from a linguistic viewpoint. Although twentieth-century literary criticism has focused on language as a topic of discussion, critical evalutions of Romanticism and Romantic writers rarely deal with it in terms derived from the philosophy of language. This book evaluates the most prolific German Romanticist, Ludwig Tieck (1773-1853), from such a linguistic viewpoint, arguing that concerns in his work can be seen as forerunners of later language analysis, from speech-act theory to theories of reference. It covers Tieck's whole career, from his youth to his final novel, Vittoria Accorombona, providing a comprehensive analysis of this major author's work; it will also be of interest to those interested in the linguistic aspects of Romanticism.

This is an OCR edition with typos. Excerpt from book: ROMANTICISM AND THE ROMANTIC SCHOOL IN GERMANY CHAPTER I ROMANTICISM, CLASSICISM AND HUMANISM I Hope my readers will pardon another attempt to settle the weighty and venerable case of Romanticism versus Classicism, these two grim ghosts of the past that have stalked with might through the nineteenth century, and have puzzled many a clear head. And I hope I may be pardoned for the word Humanism, which, in most recent days, has been on the lips of many. Methinks it is a good omen that this word is now being repolished with new meaning. It shows that there is a new awakening, a stir of new thought. Present-day philosophers have had a good deal to say on this subject, but the word does not entirely belong to philosophy: the literary critic may also have his little say; for literature deals with life, and this life is the life of humanity, and only through humanity can we come to humanism. The more one studies romanticism the stronger grows the conviction that it is not merely a passing phase of this or that literature, but arises out of a lasting, fundamental trait in human nature. This fundamental trait was not4 merely in the great romantic movements of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, but was always, will always be, and unhappy is the period when it is not. This needs some explanation, and in order to enter at once into the heart of the matter, I venture to add the seemingly paradoxical statement that likewise classicism is founded on a fundamental human trait, and that this trait was not merely during the nourishing eras of the Greeks and Romans, but was always, will always be, and unhappy is the time when it is not. When we come to fundamental traits, we must be very wary, for almost anything is easier of comprehension than the fundamentals of thin...
