Book Sociohistorical Linguistics in Southeast Asia

Download or read book Sociohistorical Linguistics in Southeast Asia written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2017-07-10 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sociohistorical Linguistics in Southeast Asia blends insights from sociolinguistics, descriptive linguistics and historical-comparative linguistics to shed new light on regional Tibeto-Burman language varieties and their relationships across spatial, temporal and cultural differences. The approach is inspired by leading Tibeto-Burmanist, David Bradley, to whom the book is dedicated. The volume includes twelve original research essays written by eleven Tibeto-Burmanists drawing on first-hand field research in five countries to explore Tibeto-Burman languages descended from seven internal sub-branches. Following two introductory chapters, each contribution is focused on a specific Tibeto-Burman language or sub-branch, collectively contributing to the literature on language identification, language documentation, typological analysis, historical-comparative classification, linguistic theory, and language endangerment research with new analyses, state-of-the-art summaries and contemporary applications.

Book Medieval Tibeto Burman Languages PIATS 2003 Tibetan studies proceedings of the tenth Seminar of the International Association for Tibetan Studies Oxford 2003

Download or read book Medieval Tibeto Burman Languages PIATS 2003 Tibetan studies proceedings of the tenth Seminar of the International Association for Tibetan Studies Oxford 2003 written by International Association for Tibetan Studies and published by Brill's Tibetan Studies Librar. This book was released on 2006 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Courts of some Nordic countries started reviewing the constitutionality of legislation long before judicial review was established elsewhere in Europe. This study examines the influence of American law and theories of judicial review on the development, practice and theorization of judicial review in Norway, Denmark, and Iceland from the 19th century to the present. The study describes how Nordic scholars in the late 19th century rationalized judicial review based on American theory and how American law influenced both their views of the institution and their way of thinking about substantive constitutional rights. These views in turn influenced Nordic jurisprudence for decades. The author then shows how the changes that took place in American constitutional jurisprudence in the 1930s and 1940s influenced Nordic constitutional theory and constitutional jurisprudence. These changes received significant attention in Nordic legal circles and the study examines how these changes, as well as the American and Nordic theory that built on them, influenced Nordic jurisprudence. Finally, it is argued that American influence in this area of law changed after 1965. Direct references to and discussions of American law almost disappeared from Nordic jurisprudence. American constitutional law was, however, an important influence on the case-law of the European Court of Human Rights, which importance increased in this period. The European Convention of Human Rights and the Court's decisions have in turn immensely influenced Nordic constitutional law.

Book Tibeto Burman Tonology

Download or read book Tibeto Burman Tonology written by Alfons Weidert and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 1987-01-01 with total page 532 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph lays the foundation for a prosodological theory of Tibeto-Burman languages within a comparative and reconstructional framework. It is primarily based on data collections of mostly unknown languages on which the author worked for more than 10 years on several projects. This comparative study of tonology represents a significant contribution not only to the historical-comparative study of Tibeto-Burman, but also to the larger field of linguistic theory, especially now that the subject increasingly begins to be approached along diachronic lines. With this in mind, it is hoped that this work will provoke future research in the field.

Book Egophoricity

Download or read book Egophoricity written by Simeon Floyd and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2018-04-15 with total page 515 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Egophoricity refers to the grammaticalised encoding of personal knowledge or involvement of a conscious self in a represented event or situation. Most typically, a marker that is egophoric is found with first person subjects in declarative sentences and with second person subjects in interrogative sentences. This person sensitivity reflects the fact that speakers generally know most about their own affairs, while in questions this epistemic authority typically shifts to the addressee. First described for Tibeto-Burman languages, egophoric-like patterns have now been documented in a number of other regions around the world, including languages of Western China, the Andean region of South America, the Caucasus, Papua New Guinea, and elsewhere. This book is a first attempt to place detailed descriptions of this understudied grammatical category side by side and to add to the cross-linguistic picture of how ideas of self and other are encoded and projected in language. The diverse but conceptually related egophoric phenomena described in its chapters provide fascinating case studies for how structural patterns in morphosyntax are forged under intersubjective, interactional pressures as we link elements of our speech to our speech situation.
