Book excerpt: Excerpt from Through the Yellowstone Park on HorsebackIn June, 1885, I decided to undertake a trip through the Rocky Mountains, with my wife and eldest daughter, a young lady of seventeen. The latter had been quite ill during the preceding winter from an affection of the lungs, and I was advised that exercise and open air life at a high altitude would remove all traces of her disease, a result which I am glad to say was fully accomplished by the trip.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Six Weeks on Horseback Through Yellowstone Park It was my intention, when my husband and I joined the Rocky Mountain Camping Party for a size-week trip to and through the Yellowstone Park, to share the pleasure of that trip with my parents by writing every night a full account of what I had seen that day. I found, however, that I was usually too tired or too cold to write a long letter after we arrived at our camp, so I merely kept a diary. A large part of my diary was written while we were on the road and is scarcely legible. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book All About the Tours and Fares in Yellowstone Park Classic Reprint

Download or read book All About the Tours and Fares in Yellowstone Park Classic Reprint written by Northwest Pacific Railway Company and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-09 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from All About the Tours and Fares in Yellowstone Park Since 1883, therefore, the public has, by way of Cinnabar, which was only between two and three miles below Gardiner, and later through Gardiner, been able to easily make the tour of the Park, the Northern Pacific running its trains, including stand ard Pullmans, to the Park entrance at Gardiner. The Park tour proper, from Gardiner, is made in large, strong, Concord stage coaches constructed for this particular purpose and combining all the desirable features of the old time and historic Con cord coach. Between Gardiner and Mammoth Hot Springs, a distance of five miles, and the latter point the Government administrative center of the Park, the coaches are drawn by six horses and have a capacity of twenty to thirty-four passengers. Beyond Mammoth Hot Springs four-horse coaches are used and they range in capacity from five to eleven passengers. Covered surreys, containing three to five passengers, are also available. From the time of leaving Gardiner until the tourist returns to that point, the regular tour comprises five and one-half days, and this is the shortest time in which one can possibly make the tour, and obtain anything like a satisfactory idea of the Park. Any attempted curtailment of the trip means an absolute and a real loss some where. This tour - round trip from Livingston six days, five and one-half days in the Park - is the result of twenty-five years' experience in trans porting tourists through the Park under the super vision of the Government, and enables one to see the most for the least expenditure of both time and money, and in the utmost comfort. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Yellowstone National Park: Historical and Descriptive As to the subject-matter itself, the author may properly repeat here from the preface of the previous edition that in every important respect the Yellowstone Park has so far fulfilled the expectation of its founders and has justified the wisdom of its creation. Our national parks are grow ing into an institution and the Yellowstone was the pioneer and remains the most important of them all. If o icial ambition for innovation and mercenary ambition for private gain are held under adequam restraint, there is no reason why it may not continue to the latest generation a genuine example of original nature - a benefit and an enjoyment, as the Act of Dedication puts it, to the people whose wisdom has preserved it to posterity.
