King once again places Congressman Sean Cross at the center of international terrorism, this time coming from radical Islam in cahoots with the Irish Republican Army. The "reality-based" track gives a minute-by-minute account of September 11, 2001 and its effect on the cities of New York and Washington, and continues with month-by-month accounts up until September 11, 2002. A leading congressional Republican, King offers keen insight into President Bush's inner circle in the days immediately following the attacks. In King's fictional future New York once again comes under attack, and it falls upon the resourceful Sean Cross to uncover the odd bedfellows that comprise this latest conspiracy to visit terror on American soil.

Book excerpt: #1 New York Times bestselling author Nora Roberts presents the electrifying conclusion to her powerful Circle Trilogy. Worlds have collided and centuries have elapsed as six people have brought their unique powers, their courage, and their hearts to a battle that could drown humanity in darkness… Her face, so pale when she’d removed her cloak, had bloomed when her hand had taken the sword. Her eyes, so heavy, so somber, had gone as brilliant as the blade. And had simply sliced through him, keen as a sword, when they’d met his… In the kingdom of Geall, the scholarly Moira has taken up the sword of her people. Now, as queen, she must prepare her subjects for the greatest battle they will ever fight—against an enemy more vicious than any they have seen. For Lilith, the most powerful vampire in the world, has followed the circle of six through time to Geall. Moira also has a personal score to settle. Vampires killed her mother—and now, she is ready to exact her revenge. But there is one vampire to whom she would trust her soul… Cian was changed by Lilith centuries ago. But now, he stands with the circle. Without hesitation, he will kill others of his kind—and has earned the respect of sorcerer, witch, warrior, and shape-shifter. But he wants more than respect from Moira—even though his desire for her makes him vulnerable. For how can a man with an eternity to live love a woman whose life is sure to end—if not by Lilith’s hand, then by the curse of time? “[Roberts] is one of the best writers in the romance world.”—The Best Reviews

Book Writing Freedom into Narratives of Racial Injustice in Virginia s Shenandoah Valley

Download or read book Writing Freedom into Narratives of Racial Injustice in Virginia s Shenandoah Valley written by Ann Denkler and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2020-10-15 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Far too many towns and cities across the United States continue to deny the history of the interstate trade of enslaved men, women, and children, and are resistant to recognizing sites associated with enslavement. The Shenandoah Valley of Virginia is one of these regions, and its historical texts and public history sites perpetuate the racist belief that enslaved individuals were not a factor in the establishment and history of this region because the census numbers in the antebellum era were ‘low’. In the case of the valley, myriad discourses have created a false story of the non-presence of African Americans that, as it became increasingly replicated, became more and more thought of as the truth. This book refocuses the study of enslavement and African-American history on the narratives of two individuals who were enslaved in the valley region, Bethany Veney and the distinctively named John Quincy Adams, to help build upon the nascent scholarship of valley enslavement and emancipation. By privileging the narratives, it asserts that enslaved individuals were astute, self-conscious historians who knew that they were forging a literary style, but also amending the historical record that had kept them absent. The book advocates the unearthing of a more complete and equitable American past, but also pushes for an interrogation of how and why false mythological pasts have been constructed and examines the legacies these myths have left behind.
