Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Depression, self-loathing, unemployment, and destroyed relationships: the effects of drug and alcohol addiction run so much deeper than the morning-after hangover. However, awareness alone will not save the struggling addict, as J.P. Willson reveals in his fearless examination of substance dependency; recovery means doing the mental and emotional work to look inside oneself and discover a way to live as a sober, fulfilled individual in an often challenging world. Through the Mind's Eye: A Journey of Self-Discovery is a thought-provoking and honest examination of the emotional, psychological, and physical ways someone must enact their own healing. As a recovering alcoholic, Willson courageously shares his own story of addiction, as well the ups and downs he experienced along the road to recovery. Packed with astonishing insights about our culture's relationship to alcohol, as well as the lies we tell ourselves in order to keep using, this book will change the way you view addiction. Willson has no qualms about telling the reader how difficult recovery is--and how there is no quick cure-all--but his compassionate, candid reflections help foster the knowledge and will to change.

Book excerpt: High Price is the harrowing and inspiring memoir of neuroscientist Carl Hart, a man who grew up in one of Miami’s toughest neighborhoods and, determined to make a difference as an adult, tirelessly applies his scientific training to help save real lives. Young Carl didn't see the value of school, studying just enough to keep him on the basketball team. Today, he is a cutting-edge neuroscientist—Columbia University’s first tenured African American professor in the sciences—whose landmark, controversial research is redefining our understanding of addiction. In this provocative and eye-opening memoir, Dr. Carl Hart recalls his journey of self-discovery, how he escaped a life of crime and drugs and avoided becoming one of the crack addicts he now studies. Interweaving past and present, Hart goes beyond the hype as he examines the relationship between drugs and pleasure, choice, and motivation, both in the brain and in society. His findings shed new light on common ideas about race, poverty, and drugs, and explain why current policies are failing.

Download or read book Journey Into the Mind s Eye written by Lesley Blanch and published by New York Review of Books. This book was released on 2018-07-10 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A stunning tale set in England, Paris, and Moscow, chronicling Blanch's love for an older Russian man and the passionate obsession that takes her to Siberia and beyond. “My book is not altogether autobiography, nor altogether travel or history either. You will just have to invent a new category,” Lesley Blanch wrote about Journey into the Mind’s Eye, a book that remains as singularly adventurous and intoxicating now as when it first came out in 1968. Russia seized Lesley Blanch when she was still a child. A mysterious traveler—swathed in Siberian furs, bearing Fabergé eggs and icons as gifts along with Russian fairy tales and fairy tales of Russia—came to visit her parents and left her starry-eyed. Years later the same man returned to sweep her off her feet. Her love affair with the Traveller, as she calls him, transformed her life and fueled an abiding fascination with Russia and Russian culture, one that would lead her to dingy apartments reeking of cabbage soup and piroshki on the outskirts of Paris in the 1960s, and to Siberia and beyond.

Book excerpt: A guide to the the relationship between the human iris and psychological characteristics. Written by renowned and established iridologist Peter Jackson-Main, this expertly conceived book provides a ground-breaking methodological model of how the iris might be used to understand the energetic, psychological and emotional attributes of a person. The analysis presented in The Mind’s Eye places energy as the central aspect of an individual’s reality. It argues that the physical body is an extension of such energy in the physical realm: a map of one’s intentions in manifesting as a physical being. Jackson-Main situates the irises as this map, which when studied will allow true depth understanding of the human body. The book begins with a brief examination of the epistemological foundations of accepted theory and practice in medicine and healing. It continues as a journey, exploring the development of iris analysis throughout the twentieth century, including information on the possibility of heritable personality traits seen in the iris. Jackson-Main then provides his own perspectives on iris analysis, in a manner which is accessible for both practitioners, and any lay-person looking to learn more about themselves. The book also contains a comprehensive guide to completing an ‘energetic’ iris chart, and suggested exercises of practice. Not only is The Mind’s Eye an indispensable guide for any health practitioners wishing to incorporate behavioural iridology to into their work, but it is also an invitation for all humans to embark on a deeply symbolic journey of self-discovery initiated through the marvels of the eye.

Book Go Home and Grow Tomatoes

Download or read book Go Home and Grow Tomatoes written by Anna Remijn Derham and published by BalboaPress. This book was released on 2012-12-20 with total page 181 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In December 2004, the doctor told me that my tumour was an invasive ductal carcinoma that needed to be removed through a lumpectomy and radiotherapy or a mastectomy procedure. I could choose. After my mastectomy, my oncologist prescribed an aggressive chemotherapy treatment to increase the odds that this aggressive ductal carcinoma cancer would not return. His decision was founded on probability, based on statistics that indicated cancer could possibly return if I didnt do anything differently. My oncologist told me that administering prescribed chemotherapy treatment would increase my survival rate from 50 percent to 60 percent if chemotherapy were to be administered within six weeks of my mastectomy. Chemotherapy treatment filled me with fear. I chose to learn. From my greatest fear came my greatest discovery and my greatest success. I have learned that I have the resources within me to choose the quality of my life along the way. I have learned to hunt those embedded limiting beliefs that have moulded me. I have learned that I can choose to change my beliefs, to change my attitude, to choose my state, to change the stresses in my life. I have learned that I can choose to change my mind to change the energy in my body to feel better and better every day. I choose. I have been clear of cancer for eight years. As a recently qualified life coach practitioner and an NLP practitioner, I am still learning. I practice what I learn through guiding others to realise their potential. My goal is to propel them forward, guiding them to use their imagination, to go back along their timeline and discover their defining moments. I urge them to uncover their embedded beliefs and know that they can change those beliefs anytime. Thus, they can change their bodies through changing their minds.

It demonstrates how God showed him that even when he felt abandoned and unloved, that it was indeed HE, the LORD GOD Almighty, who had brought him through those places. Along the way he makes discoveries that enhance his and his family’s lives through divine revelations about where God was leading him...his destination. William’s journey began at a very young age. His was the journey of a restless soul whose destination would be the discovering of the truth about the real JESUS. In the process, he discovers the truth about himself and his true purpose in life. And eventually he would come to experience a genuine personal relationship with GOD; a relationship which produced times of happiness and joy, perpetual love and internal peace of mind, and relief of conscience even in times of crisis. Book Outward Evil Inward Battle

Download or read book Outward Evil Inward Battle written by Benjamin Hart Fishkin and published by African Books Collective. This book was released on 2013 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a timely humanistic touch to memory studies. It uses literature as a laboratory for the workings of the mind, and characters as the subjects of human experimentation and diagnostics. This book considers authors from different societies and historical periods. The book is a refreshing illumination on the functioning of human memory. It complements the work of neuroscientists who seek to rationalize the workings of the same. Drawing from various ideas on memory, this rich and authoritative volume results from wide-ranging endeavors centered on the common fact that tracking memory in literature provides an astounding vista of orientations covered in its separate chapters. The writers examined in the various chapters become mediums for unleashing memory and its reconfiguration into artistic images. The ten separate chapters investigate different aspects of memory in such memoric associations as power, music, resistance, trauma, and identity. It is therefore no surprise that the editors should consider this book as "a veritable menu for everything needed for an unforgettable memory banquet".

Book excerpt: We live in a world of shadows and illusions, and of lies and deception. Finding our way through this stifling darkness requires that we learn how to recognize fraudulent distortion in all its forms. Shunning any and every preconceived notion that has been planted, and giving ourselves the ability to truly understand our own truth. This is what we call MIND'S EYE VISION, which is the ability to see with the mind and not only the eyes. And is something that is critical to our wellbeing for while the eyes sees mostly illusions, an awaken mind has the ability to see through all deception. This book has been written with one sole purpose, which is to remove the veil has placed over our eyes, and to break the chains that have been used to shackle our minds. It is a very short book consisting of only three chapters, but the words that lie within are sharper than the blade of a razor. Each chapter is separated into what the author conveniently call keys, because they are the keys to conquests for anyone who manages to attain mastery of them, and must thus be carefully articulated for they will only serve to sharpen the mind. One has to tread very carefully for knowledge of this caliber has the ability to blow minds to oblivion, and is ultimately dependent on the individual's level of enlightenment, something that negates the effect of the shock and softens the blow of what is revealed. As individuals we must learn how to comprehend the nature of the world we live in, to develop a heighten sense of things, and to see people and organizations for what they really are and not what they present themselves as. Accomplishing this will demand self discipline, and a conviction that will strengthen our resolve by ensuring that we deduce the truth behind our own history. A history that must be extrapolated from the wisdom that is attained through evidence, and one that will allow us TO KNOW THY ORIGINS, TO KNOW THY SELF, and TO KNOW THY ENEMY.
