His wartime service was exemplary; he is perhaps best remembered for his outstanding leadership at Gettysburg. At all times, however, he fought bravely and well, even at Petersburg in 1864 where he received the wound that was to torment him until his death in 1914. Throughout his time in the field, Chamberlain wrote letters of recommendation to his superiors, letters of condolence to the families of soldiers killed while under his command, and letters to his family at home. All are well written, revealing the professor's educated background and elegant prose. Nesbitt's notes set the scene, place Chamberlain's writings within the larger context of the war, and make clear the General's sterling character and his sacrifices for the country he loved.

The College, Career, and Civic Life (C3) framework, represents a renewed and formalized emphasis on the perennial social studies goals of deep thinking, reading and writing. We believe that as teachers endeavor to digest and implement the platform in schools and classrooms across the country, the desire for access to structured strategies that lead to more active and rigorous investigation in the social studies classroom will grow increasingly acute. Our hope is that this edited book might play a small role in the larger project of supporting practitioners, specifically K-12 teachers of United States history, by offering a collection of classroom-ready tools based on the Hollywood or History? strategy and designed to foster historical inquiry through the careful use of historically themed motion pictures. A major focus of The Killer Angels, the largest selling Civil War novel of all time, save Uncle Tom’s Cabin, and two major motion pictures, “Gettysburg” and “Gods and Generals,” the story of the 20th Maine has become legendary, particularly their effort to defend the Union Army’s position on Little Round Top at the Battle of Gettysburg. According to filmmaker Ken Burns, it was the story of Chamberlain as told in the novel The Killer Angels that inspired him to create his masterpiece, nine-part documentary film, “The Civil War.” In 1890s, at the encouragement of friends, Chamberlain wrote an autobiography covering his life from childhood to just before he joined the army in 1862. He stopped there, because by then he had written so many speeches and essays about his life in the army that there was no point in telling that part of his life story again. Assembled here, and annotated, are that original 1890s manuscript along with essays he wrote about the three most significant battles of his military experience—Fredericksburg, Gettysburg, and Petersburg—as well as the story of the surrender ceremony for the Confederate Army at Appomattox which he commanded.
