The Baldwin Expedition returned, and, in spite of its failure, in spite Of the many disagreeable hours which were still fresh in our memories, we were nevertheless determined to take up any Arctic project which promised sufficient results, Scientific and otherwise, to justify the work, the money and the time that we should be forced to expend upon it. On the vessel was a judge from a western city, with his wife and two daughters. An acquaintance sprang up which led to the statement from the judge that he was bound for the Arctic land, to observe at close range the habits of the reindeer. Wrap ped in seclusion, was the way in which he refer red to the north of Norway and Sweden. We have been told, he afterward wrote in a book. Book excerpt: Excerpt from First at the North Pole or Two Boys in the Arctic Circle In penning this volume I have had a twofold purpose in mind: the first to show what pure grit and determination can do under the most trying of circumstances, and the second to give my readers an insight into Esquimaux life and habits, and to relate what great explorers like Franklin, Kane, Hall, delong, Nansen, Cook, and Peary have done to open up this weird and mysterious portion of our globe. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The North Pole: Its Discovery in 1909 Under the Auspices of the Peary Arctic Club Some years ago I met at a dinner in Washington the famous Norwegian arctic explorer, Nansen, himself one of the heroes of polar adventure; and he remarked to me, "Peary is your best man; in fact I think he is on the whole the best of the men now trying to reach the Pole, and there is a good chance that he will be the one to succeed." I cannot give the exact words; but they were to the above effect; and they made a strong impression on me. I thought of them when in the summer of 1908 I, as President of the United States, went aboard Peary's ship to bid him Godspeed on the eve of what proved to be his final effort to reach the Pole. A year later, when I was camped on the northern foothills of Mt. Kenia, directly under the equator, I received by a native runner the news that he had succeeded, and that thanks to him the discovery of the North Pole was to go on the honor roll of those feats in which we take a peculiar pride because they have been performed by our fellow countrymen. Probably few outsiders realize the well-nigh incredible toil and hardship entailed in such an achievement as Peary's; and fewer still understand how many years of careful training and preparation there must be before the feat can be even attempted with any chance of success. A "dash for the pole" can be successful only if there have been many preliminary years of painstaking, patient toil. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Winter in Iceland and Lapland, Vol. 2 of 2 Accordingly, in the month of August, I crossed over to Hamburg by a steamer, and soon found myself in that noisy place. Every thing is here matter of fact and vulgar, from the pea sant-girls, with their thick legs, and hats Jihe beehives, to the Hebrew countenances that monopolize whole districts of the town. It is generally said, that there are more deformed persons congregated at Lisbon than in any other city; but in one description, that Of hunch backs, probably no place in the world can surpass Hamburg. Every variety Of contortion is to be met with here; and there is no probability that the next generation will be less ornamental, as there are certainly enough of the rising one to replace the present beauties whenever they disappear.
