Book Contemporary Theories and Systems in Psychology

Download or read book Contemporary Theories and Systems in Psychology written by Benjamin B. Wolman and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 644 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Twenty years is a long time in the life of a science. While the historical roots of psychology have not changed since the first edition of this book, some of the offshoots of the various theories and systems discussed have been crit ically reexamined and have undergone far-reaching modifications. New and bold research has led to a broadening of perspectives, and recent devel opments in several areas required a considerable amount of rewriting. I have been fortunate in the last fifteen years to have worked with about 2,000 psychologists and other behavioral scientists who contributed to several collected volumes I have edited. As the editor-in-chief of the In ternational Encyclopedia of Psychiatry, Psychology, Psychoanalysis and Neurol ogy, I have had the privilege of reading, scrutinizing, and editing the work of 1,500 experts in psychology and related disciplines. In addition, I have written several books and monographs and over one hundred scientific papers. Armed with all that experience, I have carefully examined the pages of the first edition. Chapter 8 required substantial rewriting and several new sections have been added to other chapters: "Current Soviet Psychol ogy" (Chapter 2, Section 7); "New Ideas on Purposivism" (Chapter 5, Sec tion 4); "Recent Developments in the Sociological School of Psychoanalysis" (Chapter 9, Section 4); and "Present Status of Gestalt Psychology" (Chapter 12, Section 4). Chapter 15 was omitted, and two new chapters were added: Chapter 14 ("Humanistic Psychology") and Chapter 16 ("Selected Research Areas").

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the result of my attempts at exploring, realizing, and unleashing the potential of the mind that is enigmatic to science. Changes or transformations that the mind can bring about on physical and mental plane and personal, professional, and social life is elaborated in the light of knowledge from personal experience. Extended further it unveils a spiritual path. This transforming power is bestowed upon us by meditation. Meditation is not controlling the mind and not concentrating on the mind either, but exactly the opposite to that. It is a process of unlearning what is learned and stored in the subconscious mind for eons. So long we reel under the influence of the subconscious mind life feels as though it is fate that decides what life can be. Meditation releases us from the clutches of the subconscious mind. It is a process that brings the subconscious mind in gradations to the conscious level, giving reigns of life to our hands completely, bailing us out from the notion of fate or predestination

Book excerpt: In Sodoms ThresholdThe Desire for the Unthinkable, author Dr. Isaac B. Rosler deconstructs the narrative of Sodom and highlights how religion borrows its fervor and passion from a nonreligious impetus that is not only other than religion but also other than God. He invites us to trespassto think about what has already trespassed our senses and to make sense of an overabundant excess that remains unsacrificable even through ruins, ashes, and forgetfulness. Sodoms Threshold explores concepts of alterity and otherness, and it calls us to think about a space of passion that keeps returning in spite of interruptionsin spite of religious, family, or state mandates that command us not to touch an alterity that has already arrived and is in excess of every touch. The Sodomites forbidden passion is an excess that impassionsit is a surplus that will be usurped and neutralized ad infi nitum by the multiple religions that both rise against its mystery and yet are also founded by it. Though Sodom was erased, its alterity and its surplus are indestructible.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An unflinching shapeshifter, Beast at Every Threshold dances between familial hauntings and cultural histories, intimate hungers and broader griefs. Memories become malleable, pop culture provides a backdrop to glittery queer love, and folklore speaks back as a radical tool of survival. With unapologetic precision, Natalie Wee unravels constructs of “otherness” and names language our most familiar weapon, illuminating the intersections of queerness, diaspora, and loss with obsessive, inexhaustible ferocity—and in resurrecting the self rendered a site of violence, makes visible the “Beast at Every Threshold.” Beguiling and deeply imagined, Wee’s poems explore thresholds of marginality, queerness, immigration, nationhood, and reinvention of the self through myth.
