Book excerpt: Marlanda Dekine's debut collection is a holy, radical unlearning and reclamation of self. What does it mean to be a Gullah-Geechee descendant from a rural place where a third of the nation's founding wealth was harvested by trafficked West and Central Africans? Dekine's poems travel across age and time, signaling that both the past and future exist in the present. Through erasure and persona, Dekine reimagines intergenerational traumas and calls institutions from the Works Progress Administration narratives to modern-day museums to task. Beyond gospel music, fear, and the stories of generations past, Thresh & Hold offers magic, healing, and innovative pathways to manifest intimacy. Dekine remembers, remakes, and brings forth their many selves, traveling far in order to deeply connect to a spiritual home within and all around them, calling: "I am listening to Spirit. I am not dying today." Marlanda Dekine is the winner of the 2021 New Southern Voices Poetry Prize.

In this almanac of place and memory, Lara Mimosa Montes writes of her family’s past, returning to the Bronx of the 70s and 80s and the artistry that flourished there. What is the threshold between now and then, and how can the poet be the bridge between the two?

Book Examination of Service and Stress Data of Three Ships for Development of Hull Girder Load Criteria

Download or read book Examination of Service and Stress Data of Three Ships for Development of Hull Girder Load Criteria written by J. F. Dalzell and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a follow-on project to SSC-240, 'Load Criteria for Ship Stuctural Design', which proposed methods for the estimation and superposition of the primary loads and performed sample calculations for one conventional dry cargo ship. It involved the following bending moments: still-water due to weight and buoyancy; ships own wave train; quasi-static wave-induced, vertical and lateral combined; dynamic loads, including slamming, whipping and springings; and thermal effects. Here the service and full-scale stress data of three larger and/or faster ships (Containership SL-7, Bulk Carrier FOTINI-L and very large Crude Carrier UNIVERSE IRELAND) are examined for the purpose of the enventual development of hull-girder criteria. The examination is limited to extreme midship bending moment loads which are related to the ultimate strength. An assessment is made of the compatibility between the service and stress data of the distinctly different study ships and the analysis methods of SSC-240 and their assumptions for cargo ship type. Considerable insight is obtained into the probable correct mathematical approximations of the loads and their interrelationships. It appears that still-water bending moments can be approached probabilistically, however, considerable additional information on experienced loading conditions must be gathered to determine the statistical distributions. Additional effort is required to determine the suitable probabilistic expression and a synthesis method for the contribution of vibration to the extreme load. (Author).

Download or read book Animal Sonar Systems written by R. Busnel and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 1097 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thirteen years have gone by since the first international meet ing on Animal Sonar Systems was held in Frascati, Italy, in 1966. Since that time, almost 900 papers have been published on its theme. The first symposium was vital as it was the starting point for new research lines whose goal was to design and develop technological systems with properties approaching optimal biological systems. There have been highly significant developments since then in all domains related to biological sonar systems and in their appli cations to the engineering field. The time had therefore come for a multidisciplinary integration of the information gathered, not only on the evolution of systems used in animal echolocation, but on systems theory, behavior and neurobiology, signal-to-noise ratio, masking, signal processing, and measures observed in certain species against animal sonar systems. Modern electronics technology and systems theory which have been developed only since 1974 now allow designing sophisticated sonar and radar systems applying principles derived from biological systems. At the time of the Frascati meeting, integrated circuits and technol ogies exploiting computer science were not well enough developed to yield advantages now possible through use of real-time analysis, leading to, among other things, a definition of target temporal char acteristics, as biological sonar systems are able to do. All of these new technical developments necessitate close co operation between engineers and biologists within the framework of new experiments which have been designed, particularly in the past five years.

Book Diving Science Revisited

Download or read book Diving Science Revisited written by Michael B. Strauss and published by Best Publishing. This book was released on 2023-02-01 with total page 455 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Diving Science...Revisited is like no other diving text, including its predecessor, Diving Science. Amplified with figures, tables, and photos in color, this book includes four unique and innovative parts amplified by nine contributors. - Medical problems of diving (MPD) are discussed from stimulus-response perspectives in the phase of a dive in which they are likely to occur. - MPD are explained by how they affect the human diver whether physical, physiological, psychological, and/or lack of awareness. - A variety of diving types and situations from breath-hold to rebreather, from children to women to older aged adults, from cold water to cave, and from deep altitude to diving with handicaps are described in individual chapters with their merits, hazards, and necessary precautions for safe diving. - Part IV contains a concise summary of the MPD from seven different perspectives ranging from the significance of the problem to when to return to diving. - Part V consists of a rhetorical question for each of the first four parts with bullet points that recap the subjects covered in each chapter. This book describes the positive as well as undesirable ways divers' interact with the aquatic environment. It is especially recommended for the following: -Diving instructors and supervisors - Those involved with clinical applications of hyperbaric oxygen therapy - Those engaged in diving-associated marine biology and underwater missions - All divers, whether novice or advanced, who want to advance their knowledge about the science and medical challenges of diving.

Book Unlocking the Idioms An LDS Perspective on Understanding Scriptural Idioms

Download or read book Unlocking the Idioms An LDS Perspective on Understanding Scriptural Idioms written by George M. Peacock and published by Cedar Fort Publishing & Media. This book was released on 2023-02-02 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Idioms and idiomatic language are as real to the messages of holy scripture as are prophecies and parables. Idioms are words and phrases that express more than the actual words themselves. They paint mental or emotional images that bring events or feelings to the present quickly and with intensity. Like a cultural shorthand, they can describe things without using lengthy explanations. On the other hand, idioms can be meaningless and misleading if the reader has no experience with the culture and language from which the idioms originated. Mistranslation and cultural differences both contribute to the misinterpretation of many scriptural idioms. Phrases such as gird up your loins and salt of the earth will lose their intended effect if they are taken only literally. In these pages, George M. Peacock explains exactly what idioms are, how to identify them, and how learning their meaning can add to your understanding of the scriptures and their messages. Unlocking the Idioms will help bring you insight and knowledge as you feast upon the words of the Lord.
