Book Three Years in the Federal Cavalry Illustrated Edition

Download or read book Three Years in the Federal Cavalry Illustrated Edition written by Thomas Coleman Younger and published by e-artnow. This book was released on 2019-07-20 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Madison & Adams Press presents the Civil War Memories Series. This meticulous selection of the firsthand accounts, memoirs and diaries is specially comprised for Civil War enthusiasts and all people curious about the personal accounts and true life stories of the unknown soldiers, the well known commanders, politicians, nurses and civilians amidst the war. "I have for a long time intended the publication of this book, for I thought that such a work would not only be found interesting to the public, but would do justice to the brave men with whom it was my fortune to be associated during the dark hours of the rebellion. My descriptions of battles and skirmishes, in some cases, may seem too brief and unsatisfactory; to which I can only say that scores of engagements, which to the participants appear to be of vast importance, have very little general interest. On the other hand, however, it is to be regretted that where our gallant horsemen have done the most brilliant things, it has been impossible for me, in many instances, to secure reliable and detailed accounts with which to do them full justice."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Three Years in the Federal Cavalry chronicles the years Willard W. Glazier spent in the mounted service of the United States. This edition includes the original illustrations of people he knew and events he experienced. An eye-opening account of how the Union cavalry operated during the American Civil War, this book offers a first-hand account of one cavalryman's experiences from the time he enlisted in April 1961 through to his capture by Confederate forces in October 1863. Between these dates, Glazier's unit was involved in many conflicts, their roles often pivotal and their gallantry unquestionable. Willard W. Glazier was at the front line in several key conflicts throughout the American Civil War. He and his fellow cavalrymen fought in Maryland and Virginia under multiple prominent commanders such as McClellan and Burnside. Glazier is careful to balance the excitement and chaos of battle with the more mundane realities of fighting a war. Everyday camp life and the conversations the officers would have among themselves, and the journeys between the battlefields, receive due consideration. Considered today to be a classic biography for its honest readability, Glazier's account of his military service remains popularly read to this day. Whether you harbor a general interest in the U. S. Civil War or the American cavalry as a unit, or simply enjoy good autobiography, this is a title worthy of attention.

Book excerpt: A horse soldier's excellent account of war against the Confederacy This is the best kind of military memoir. Its author, William Glazier decided-after the end of the war-that the general public should know more of the neglected activities of the Union Cavalry and, since he was an active participant within its ranks, he set out to rectify that shortcoming by writing this book. History may have subsequently revealed more such accounts than he imagined, but, of course, there is never enough of such valuable material. Glazier's account is revealed to be invaluable since he created it based upon a journal he kept all through his military experiences-making entries around the 'bivouac fire, in the camp and often during the lull of battle' ensuring accuracy and immediacy of impressions for later generations to benefit from. Here then is a vital account, filled with the personal experiences and anecdotes of a young officer of the 2nd New York Cavalry. We join him-and them-in the Army of the Potomac in Virginia and stay with him through many marches, skirmishes and battles-making this book an essential component of every library of the American Civil War.

This book was released on 2015-11-06 with total page 803 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Includes Civil War Map and Illustrations Pack – 224 battle plans, campaign maps and detailed analyses of actions spanning the entire period of hostilities. The brutal occupation of Baltimore in 1861 by the Federal troops under Benjamin “Beast” Butler, would be the final straw for many Confederate leaning Marylanders. One such was Harry Gilmor, imprisoned for his political beliefs and his service in the Baltimore County Horse Guards, he was determined to join the Southern forces. As soon as he was released from prison he travelled as fast as possible to join the troops under Colonel Turner Ashby; by March 1862 he was commissioned as a captain of the Twelfth Virginia Cavalry. He set to his task with a passion earning much glory fighting under Jackson in the Valley campaign, even being entrusted with special missions by the great general himself. His military star was on the rise and he began to gain a sterling reputation as a cavalry commander often employed in scouting, raids and ambushes. He was in action at the Battle of Brandy Station, in the Shenandoah Valley and led the famous “Raid Round Baltimore” in 1864. Despite all his cunning and daring the tide of war turned against him and his Confederate comrades and he was captured in February 1865 in Hardy County. As a successful Confederate raider the Federal press had heaped calumnies upon him and his men, so after the war he wrote these memoirs to set the record straight. A dashing read of a famous Confederate cavalry officer.

Book The Artillery Of Nathan Bedford Forrest s Cavalry The Wizard Of The Saddle Illustrated Edition

Download or read book The Artillery Of Nathan Bedford Forrest s Cavalry The Wizard Of The Saddle Illustrated Edition written by John Watson Morton and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2014-08-15 with total page 934 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Includes Civil War Map and Illustrations Pack - 224 battle plans, campaign maps and detailed analyses of actions spanning the entire period of hostilities. One of the shining lights of the Confederate war effort Nathan Bedford Forrest, was an iconoclast; militarily untrained at the outbreak of the Civil War he was to wield his cavalry command with innovative doctrines, effective strategies that confounded many Union commanders. Central to his success was his hard riding mounted artillery which provided him with a heavy punch to add to his mobility. Captain John Morton rose to the post of Forrest’s chief of artillery in 1864 after much service since joining the grey ranks in 1861. Many years after the end of his military service he set out to write a history of the unit he commanded, this volume is comprehensive, readable and very well-written. He charts all of the engagements and actions in which he and his men fought with detail and verve; however, the greatest insights are into the daily life of the Confederate raiders, their morale and anecdotes of his leader and his style of command. A Classic Confederate history.

Book Tennessee s Union Cavalrymen

Download or read book Tennessee s Union Cavalrymen written by Myers E. Brown, II and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2008 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite officially joining the Confederacy in 1861, Tennessee provided the Union with nearly 32,000 troops during the Civil War. Representing a Southern opposition to secession and loyalty to the Union, many of these Tennesseans served as cavalry or as mounted infantry. Among those serving on horseback were Samuel P. Carter, who temporarily left his post in the U.S. Navy to command a cavalry brigade; Pres. Andrew Johnson's son, Robert Johnson, who served as colonel of the 1st Tennessee Cavalry; and James Brownlow, son of Tennessee's Reconstruction governor, who led his command in a naked charge across the Chattahoochee River. Labeled traitors and renegades by Confederate Tennesseans, these men risked reprisals on their homes and families as they dutifully served the Union cause. This volume draws upon photographs from the collections of the Tennessee State Museum, the Library of Congress, the United States Army Military History Institute, and other public and private collections to tell the story of these loyal cavaliers.
