Book Three Years in the Federal Cavalry Civil War Memoir

Download or read book Three Years in the Federal Cavalry Civil War Memoir written by Thomas Coleman Younger and published by e-artnow. This book was released on 2019-12-18 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This eBook edition has been formatted to the highest digital standards and adjusted for readability on all devices. Excerpt: "I have for a long time intended the publication of this book, for I thought that such a work would not only be found interesting to the public, but would do justice to the brave men with whom it was my fortune to be associated during the dark hours of the rebellion. My descriptions of battles and skirmishes, in some cases, may seem too brief and unsatisfactory; to which I can only say that scores of engagements, which to the participants appear to be of vast importance, have very little general interest. On the other hand, however, it is to be regretted that where our gallant horsemen have done the most brilliant things, it has been impossible for me, in many instances, to secure reliable and detailed accounts with which to do them full justice."

Book excerpt: A horse soldier's excellent account of war against the Confederacy This is the best kind of military memoir. Its author, William Glazier decided-after the end of the war-that the general public should know more of the neglected activities of the Union Cavalry and, since he was an active participant within its ranks, he set out to rectify that shortcoming by writing this book. History may have subsequently revealed more such accounts than he imagined, but, of course, there is never enough of such valuable material. Glazier's account is revealed to be invaluable since he created it based upon a journal he kept all through his military experiences-making entries around the 'bivouac fire, in the camp and often during the lull of battle' ensuring accuracy and immediacy of impressions for later generations to benefit from. Here then is a vital account, filled with the personal experiences and anecdotes of a young officer of the 2nd New York Cavalry. We join him-and them-in the Army of the Potomac in Virginia and stay with him through many marches, skirmishes and battles-making this book an essential component of every library of the American Civil War.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Three Years in the Federal Cavalry chronicles the years Willard W. Glazier spent in the mounted service of the United States. This edition includes the original illustrations of people he knew and events he experienced. An eye-opening account of how the Union cavalry operated during the American Civil War, this book offers a first-hand account of one cavalryman's experiences from the time he enlisted in April 1961 through to his capture by Confederate forces in October 1863. Between these dates, Glazier's unit was involved in many conflicts, their roles often pivotal and their gallantry unquestionable. Willard W. Glazier was at the front line in several key conflicts throughout the American Civil War. He and his fellow cavalrymen fought in Maryland and Virginia under multiple prominent commanders such as McClellan and Burnside. Glazier is careful to balance the excitement and chaos of battle with the more mundane realities of fighting a war. Everyday camp life and the conversations the officers would have among themselves, and the journeys between the battlefields, receive due consideration. Considered today to be a classic biography for its honest readability, Glazier's account of his military service remains popularly read to this day. Whether you harbor a general interest in the U. S. Civil War or the American cavalry as a unit, or simply enjoy good autobiography, this is a title worthy of attention.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The eleventh of April, 1861, revealed the real intention of the Southern people in their dastardly assault upon Fort Sumter. The thunder of Rebel cannon shook the air not only around Charleston, but sent its thrilling vibrations to the remotest sections of the country, and was the precursor of a storm whose wrath no one anticipated. This shock of arms was like a fire-alarm in our great cities, and the North arose in its might with a grand unanimity which the South did not expect. The spirit and principle of Rebellion were so uncaused and unprovoked, that scarcely could any one be found at home or abroad to justify them.President Lincoln thereupon issued a call for seventy-five thousand men to uphold and vindicate the authority of the Government, and to prove, if possible, that secession was not only a heresy in doctrine, but an impracticability in the American Republic. The response to this call was much more general than the most sanguine had any reason to look for. The enthusiasm of the people was quite unbounded. Individuals encouraged individuals; families aroused families; communities vied with communities, and States strove with States. Who could be the first and do the most, was the noble contention which everywhere prevailed. All political party lines seemed to be obliterated. Under this renovating and inspiring spirit the work of raising the nucleus of the grandest army that ever swept a continent went bravely on. Regiments were rapidly organized and as rapidly as possible sent forward to the seat of Government; and so vast was the number that presented themselves for their country's defence, that the original call was soon more than filled, and the authorities found themselves unable to accept many organizations which were eager to press into the fray.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This annotated Civil War memoir provides a detailed account of General Morgan’s famous battles and raids from a Confederate soldier’s perspective. John Marion Porter grew up working at his family's farm and dry goods store in Butler County, Kentucky. He was studying to become a lawyer when the Civil War began. As the son of a family of slave owners, Porter identified with the Southern cause and quickly enlisted in the Confederate army. He and his lifelong friend Thomas Henry Hines served in the Ninth Kentucky Calvary under John Hunt Morgan, the “Thunderbolt of the Confederacy.” When the war ended, Porter began writing detailed memoirs of his experiences during the war years, including tales of scouting behind enemy lines, sabotaging a Union train, being captured and held as a prisoner of war, and searching for an army to join after his release. Editor Kent Masterson Brown spent several years preparing Porter's memoir for publication, clarifying details and adding annotations to provide historical context. One of Morgan's Men is a fascinating firsthand account of the life of a Confederate soldier.

Book A Just and Righteous Cause

Download or read book A Just and Righteous Cause written by Bruce J. Dinges and published by SIU Press. This book was released on 2016-06-29 with total page 478 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: General Benjamin H. Grierson is most widely known as the brilliant cavalryman whose actions in the Civil War's Mississippi Valley campaign facilitated Ulysses S. Grant's capture of Vicksburg. There is, however, much more to this key Union officer than a successful raid into Confederate-held Mississippi. In A Just and Righteous Cause: Benjamin H. Grierson's Civil War Memoir, edited by Bruce J. Dinges and Shirley A. Leckie, Grierson tells his story in forceful, direct, and highly engaging prose. A Just and Righteous Cause paints a vivid picture of Grierson's prewar and Civil War career, touching on his antislavery views, Republican Party principles, and military strategy and tactics. His story begins with his parents' immigration to the United States and follows his childhood, youth, and career as a musician; the early years of his marriage; his business failures prior to becoming a cavalry officer in an Illinois regiment; his experiences in battle; and his Reconstruction appointment. Grierson also provides intimate accounts of his relationships with such prominent politicians and Union leaders as Abraham Lincoln, Richard Yates, Andrew Johnson, William T. Sherman, Ulysses S. Grant, John C. Frémont, and Benjamin Prentiss. Because Grierson wrote the memoir mainly with his family as the intended audience, he manages to avoid the self-promotion that plagues many of his contemporaries' chronicles. His reliance on military records and correspondence, along with family letters, lends an immediacy rarely found in military memoirs. His reminiscences also add fuel to a reemerging debate on soldiers' motivations for enlisting—in Grierson's case, patriotism and ideology—and shed new light on the Western theater of the Civil War, which has seen a recent surge in interest among Civil War enthusiasts. A non–West Point officer, Grierson owed his developing career to his independent studies of the military and his connections to political figures in his home state of Illinois and later to important Union leaders. Dinges and Leckie provide a helpful introduction, which gives background on the memoir and places Grierson's career into historical context. Aided by fourteen photos and two maps, as well as the editors' superb annotations, A Just and Righteous Cause is a valuable addition to Civil War history.

Book Memoirs of the Stuart Horse Artillery Battalion

Download or read book Memoirs of the Stuart Horse Artillery Battalion written by Robert J. Trout and published by Univ. of Tennessee Press. This book was released on 2008 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Until recently, it has been difficult for anyone with an interest in the Army of Northern Virginia's horse artillery, which served under legendary cavalry commander J. E. B. Stuart, to envision what the men of the battalion endured. With the publication in 2002 of Robert Trout's seminal book, Galloping Thunder: The Stuart Horse Artillery Battalion, the endeavors of the unit were rescued from obscurity." "In Memoirs of the Stuart Horse Artillery Battalion, Trout provides readers with complete versions of three important primary documents written by soldiers of the battalion. Lt. Lewis T. Nunnelee's history of Moorman's Battery is based on a seven-volume diary that Nunnelee kept during the war and features near daily entries of the battery's actions." "The "History of Hart's Battery," as told by Maj. James F. Hart, Dr. Levi C. Stephens, Louis Sherfesee, and Charles H. Schwing, is, as Trout puts it, "a cannon of a different caliber." It recounts in broader terms the battery's history from its inception before the war to its surrender as the last horse artillery in the field. The authors offer rare glimpses into the development of tactics learned from the "school of the battlefield."" "Finally, Louis Sherfesee's "Reminiscences of A Color-Bearer" fleshes out many of the stories in the history that he co-wrote with Hart and his fellow soldiers. Filled with short vignettes, it offers a behind-the-scenes look at the battery in action." "Together, these rich documents provide welcome insights into the day-to-day experiences of the often overlooked Confederate horse artillery, which played an important role in cementing Stuart's reputation as one of the most outstanding cavalry commanders in the Civil War." --Book Jacket.
