Book excerpt: Excerpt from Three Voyages in the Black Sea to the Coast of Circassia: Including Descriptions of the Ports, and the Importance of Their Trade; With Sketches of the Manners, Customs, Religion, &C., &C., Of the Circassians Without pretending to fathom the mystery attached to the declaration of Circassian independence, which appeared fifteen months ago in the Portfolio, the original of which was stated, in a late debate in the House of Commons, to exist in England, and the authenticity of which was not denied by his Majesty's Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, we can hardly imagine, on perusing the letter extracted from the Times, under the signature of Daoud, and appended after the act of independence, that the chieftains of Circassia are not aided in their glorious struggle by a sympathy in this country, which is no less powerful than intelligent and effective. We are indebted to the Editors of the Portfolio for the chart of the bearings of the Circassian coast. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Circassian Miracle the Nation Neither Tsars nor Commissars nor Russia Could Stop

Download or read book The Circassian Miracle the Nation Neither Tsars nor Commissars nor Russia Could Stop written by Adel Bashqawi and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2019-12-11 with total page 701 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work is dedicated to Circassia, the historical homeland of the Circassians, who inspired and encouraged emerging generations to maintain the torch of freedom and to lead the way, despite all obstacles and attempts of exclusion that have been tested over the years. Since the subjugation of their homeland, the Circassians were subjected to harsh conditions in all walks of life, which wasn’t easy to withstand and get through. This meant a dictatorial, savage, direct military and security jurisdiction, and domination for the duration of both tyrant tsarist imperial and Soviet/Communist eras. From the beginning of the 1990s on, the general situation has been quite different concerning the circumstances that the Circassian affairs have been clutched to. After decades of being forgotten, the people of the Caucasus region and the world at large have started to become enlightened with information that was prevented and blocked from the public. Even the historians, specialists, and academicians were not in the picture of the pain, destiny, and suffering that the Circassian nation was inflicted with for decades, specifically since the occupation and deportation of 1864.

Book Black Prometheus

Book excerpt: The Prometheus myth, for several reasons became a crucial site for conceptualizing human liberation in the immanent space of a finite globe structured by white domination and black slavery. The titan's defiant theft of fire from the regnant gods was translated through a high-stakes racial coding either as an 'African' revolt against the cosmic status quo that augured a pure autonomy, a black revolutionary immanence against which idealist philosophers like Hegel defined their projects and slaveholders defended their lives and positions. Or as a 'Caucasian' reflection of the divine power evidently working in favor of Euro-Christian civilization that transmuted the naked egoism of conquest into a righteous heteronomy-Euro-Christian civilization's mobilization by the Absolute or its internalization of a transcendent principle of universal Reason.

Book Slavery and Abolition in the Ottoman Middle East

Download or read book Slavery and Abolition in the Ottoman Middle East written by Ehud R. Toledano and published by University of Washington Press. This book was released on 2012-02-01 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the Ottoman Empire, many members of the ruling elite were legally slaves of the sultan and therefore could, technically, be ordered to surrender their labor, their property, or their lives at any moment. Nevertheless, slavery provided a means of social mobility, conferring status and political power within the military, the bureaucracy, or the domestic household and formed an essential part of patronage networks. Ehud R. Toledano’s exploration of slavery from the Ottoman viewpoint is based on extensive research in British, French, and Turkish archives and offers rich, original, and important insights into Ottoman life and thought. In an attempt to humanize the narrative and take it beyond the plane of numbers, tables and charts, Toledano examines the situations of individuals representing the principal realms of Ottoman slavery, female harem slaves, the sultan’s military and civilian kuls, court and elite eunuchs, domestic slaves, Circassian agricaultural slaves, slave dealers, and slave owners. Slavery and Abolition in the Ottoman Middle East makes available new and significantly revised studies on nineteenth-century Middle Eastern slavery and suggests general approaches to the study of slavery in different cultures.
