Book Contest Pieces for Trombone and Piano

Download or read book Contest Pieces for Trombone and Piano written by James R. Briscoe and published by A-R Editions, Inc.. This book was released on 2015-05-15 with total page 65 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Paris Conservatoire's rigorous curriculum for training both singers and instrumentalists led to a wealth of musical treasures in the form of pieces composed specifically for the end-of-year examinations, which culminated in a public prize competition, the Concours du Conservatoire. The solos composed for these examinations, both the sight-reading works and the longer contest pieces (morceaux de concours), constitute the first extended series of compositions for woodwinds, brass, and harp in music history, being composed nearly annually for each instrument beginning in the 1830s. The wealth of musical treasures resulting from this systematic accumulation of works represents the historical core of these instrumental repertories today. The present volume contains a selection of morceaux de concours and other pieces written in a similar style, representing some of the most influential oboists and composers associated with the Conservatoire.

Book excerpt: The clarinet has a long and rich history as a solo, orchestral, and chamber musical instrument. In this broad-ranging account Eric Hoeprich, a performer, teacher, and expert on historical clarinets, explores its development, repertoire, and performance history. Looking at the antecedents of the clarinet, as well as such related instruments as the chalumeau, basset horn, alto clarinet, and bass clarinet, Hoeprich explains the use and development of the instrument in the Baroque age. The period from the late 1700s to Beethoven's early years is shown to have fostered ever wider distribution and use of the instrument, and a repertoire of increasing richness. The first half of the nineteenth century, a golden age for the clarinet, brought innovation in construction and great virtuosity in performance, while the following century and a half produced a surge in new works from many composers. The author also devotes a chapter to the role of the clarinet in bands, folk music, and jazz.

Book A Study of Performance Practice for Three Morceaux de Concours for Trumpet from the Paris Conservatory

Download or read book A Study of Performance Practice for Three Morceaux de Concours for Trumpet from the Paris Conservatory written by John Christopher Underwood and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 43 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The purpose of this study was to address performance practice, and develop a systematic approach to the preparation of three pieces composed for the Morceaux de Concours at the Paris Conservatory. The pieces were written by former students of the conservatory. Each composition features distinct musical and technical challenges for the trumpet. Solo de Concours written by Theo Charlier requires the performer to play musically in a variety of ranges, dynamics, and articulations. For this work, exercises were composed to address these demands. Morceau de Concours by Augustin Savard is technically less challenging but requires mastery of phrasing and lip flexibility. Finally, Legend requires the most preparation out of the three works examined. The composition requires a performer to have established solid trumpet fundamentals. For this piece, dynamic exercises, a chromatic etude and multiple tonguing exercises were developed to equip the trumpeter with the skills needed to excel in the performance of these works."--Abstract from author supplied metadata.

Book Horn Teaching at the Paris Conservatoire 1792 to 1903

Download or read book Horn Teaching at the Paris Conservatoire 1792 to 1903 written by Jeffrey L. Snedeker and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-07-05 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The transition from the valveless natural horn to the modern valved horn in 19th-century Paris was different from similar transitions in other countries. While valve technology was received happily by players of other members of the brass family, strong support for the natural horn, with its varied color palette and virtuoso performance traditions, slowed the reception and application of the valve to the horn. Using primary sources including Conservatoire method books, accounts of performances and technological advances, and other evidence, this book tells the story of the transition from natural horn to valved horn at the Conservatoire, from 1792 to 1903, including close examination of horn teaching before the arrival of valved brass in Paris, the initial reception and application of this technology to the horn, the persistence of the natural horn, and the progression of acceptance, use, controversies, and eventual adoption of the valved instrument in the Parisian community and at the Conservatoire. Active scholars, performers, and students interested in the horn, 19th-century brass instruments, teaching methods associated with the Conservatoire, and the intersection of technology and performing practice will find this book useful in its details and conclusions, including ramifications on historically-informed performance today.

Book A Comparison of Four Solo de Concours for Saxophone at the Conservatoire National Sup rieure de Musique

Download or read book A Comparison of Four Solo de Concours for Saxophone at the Conservatoire National Sup rieure de Musique written by William Michael Compton and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this lecture recital document is to trace the development of saxophone technique and repertoire though the study of concours or examination solos written over a forty-year period at the Conservatoire National Supérieure de Musique in Paris. This study is based on a structural and pedagogical analysis of works written at ten-year intervals: Tango et Tarentelle (1946) by Marcel Dautremer; Prélude, Cadence, et Finale (1956) by Alfred Desenclos; Concerto pour Saxophone Alto, Movements II and III (1966) by Ida Gotkovsky; and Ampélopsis (1976) Jean-Michel Defaye. Though the compositions share some features – sonata form is used by every composer but Defaye, and the tritone assumes a prominent role in each work – they exhibit far more differences than similarities: Dautremer is heavily influenced by neo-classicism; Desenclos uses minor-third cycles to generate melodic and harmonic cells; Gotkovsky draws inspiration from Messiaen’s Modes of Limited Transposition; and Defaye integrates elements derived from Bartôk, Stravinsky, and American jazz. In addition to their structural differences, the works offer diverse concerns and challenges in teaching and performance. Discussion of these problems also provides insight on the evolution of mid-twentieth century French saxophone literature.
