Book Three Sisters Ponds

Download or read book Three Sisters Ponds written by Phillip Reid and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2023-03-15 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In September 2000, I was sitting on a bench facing the Mediterranean Sea in the French Riviera town of Nice. I had flown there during a three-day break in the Pan Am Flight 103 bombing trial in Camp Ziest, Netherlands, where I was expected to testify. As I sat on this bench eating lunch, I suddenly found myself overwhelmed by emotion. It was an awakening: I realized that my being there was the fulfillment of one of my many life dreams and goals that were launched thirty-one years earlier from another bench facing the Three Sisters Ponds in Baltimore’s Druid Hill Park. Now, from a bench in the French Riviera, I began to chronicle the manifestation of those dreams and goals, accomplished through my thirty-six-year law enforcement career as a Baltimore City policeman and FBI agent. I'm hoping my story catches on with anyone who dares to dream and set challenging and aggressive life goals. While writing Three Sisters Ponds, there were areas of my story where I felt compelled to express myself poetically.

Book In Pursuit of Trophy Brook Trout

Download or read book In Pursuit of Trophy Brook Trout written by Lou Zambello and published by Wilderness Adventures Press. This book was released on 2018-12-10 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis) has captured the fascination of anglers for centuries, and some flyfishers devote lifetimes in pursuit of wild or native trophies. Yet 90 percent never catch a brook trout over 14 inches. Why? Simple: the average angler doesn’t know how to find them and rarely employs the specialized tactics required for hooking a large brook trout. Which is why well-known author of New England flyfishing, Lou Zambello, has written this new book, In Pursuit of Trophy Brook Trout: Techniques, Timing, and Territories. Zambello has fished for and guided anglers after wild trophy brook trout for decades. He has spent years deciphering seasonal migration patterns, aquatic life cycles, and weather events impacting brookie behavior. He’s tested different flies and tactics, both on the surface and down deep. This book explains where big brookies can be found, when they are catchable, how to fool them, and how to land them, all while recounting illuminating trophy trout experiences. The beauty of a male trophy brook trout in spawning colors rivals any of nature’s canvases – broad greenish flanks decorated with blue halos and the deep orange or burgundy of its underside highlighted by white-tipped fins that looked like an underwater baker had dipped them in vanilla frosting. Landing a wild or native brook trout that measure in pounds instead of inches should be at the top of everyone’s bucket list. Read and reread this insightful new book and become one of the lucky few who can boast of landing a trophy wild brook trout.

Book The Bio Integrated Farm

    Book Details:
  • Author : Shawn Jadrnicek
  • Publisher : Chelsea Green Publishing
  • Release : 2016
  • ISBN : 1603585885
  • Pages : 385 pages

Download or read book The Bio Integrated Farm written by Shawn Jadrnicek and published by Chelsea Green Publishing. This book was released on 2016 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Bio-Integrated Farm is a twenty-first-century manual for managing nature's resources. This groundbreaking book brings "system farming" and permaculture to a whole new level. Author Shawn Jadrnicek presents new insights into permaculture, moving beyond the philosophical foundation to practical advanced designs based on a functional analysis. Holding his designs to a higher standard, Jadrnicek's components serve at least seven functions (classical permaculture theory only seeks at least two functions). With every additional function a component performs, the design becomes more advanced and saves more energy. A bio-integrated greenhouse, for example, doesn't just extend the season for growing vegetables; it also serves as a rainwater collector, a pond site, an aquaponics system, and a heat generator. Jadrnicek's prevalent theme is using water to do the work. Although applicable in many climates, his designs are particularly important for areas coping with water scarcity. Jadrnicek focuses on his experience as farm manager at the Clemson University Student Organic Farm and at his residence in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. These locations lie at the cooler northern edge of a humid subtropical climate that extends west to the middle of Texas and north along the coast to New Jersey. He has created permaculture patterns ranging from raising transplants and field design to freshwater prawn production and composting. These patterns have simplified the operation of the 125-share CSA farm while reducing reliance on outside resources. In less time than it takes to mow his two-acre homestead, Jadrnicek is building a you-pick fruit farm using permaculture patterns. His landscape requires only the labor of harvesting, and the only outside input he buys is a small amount of chicken feed. By carefully engaging the free forces of nature--water, wind, sunlight, convection, gravity, and decomposition--Jadrnicek creates sustenance without maintenance and transforms waste into valuable farm resources. The Bio-Integrated Farm offers in-depth information about designing and building a wide range of bio-integrated projects including reflecting ponds, water-storage ponds, multipurpose basins, greenhouses, compost heat extraction, pastured chicken systems, aquaculture, hydroponics, hydronic heating, water filtration and aeration, cover cropping, and innovative rainwater-harvesting systems that supply water for drip irrigation and flushing toilets.
