Book excerpt: In Worship Innovations: Easy Bible Drama, you will meet Bible persons just outside their recorded stories. Listen to Sarah and Isaac on the evening he returns from Mount Moriah; watch Joseph (in Potiphar's jail) confront Satan about whether integrity pays. Agonize with Anne (the mother of Mary) as she sends her daughter off to register for taxes in Bethlehem; hear the private conversation of Nicodemus and Joseph of Arimathea following Nicodemus' secret meeting with Jesus. Each of these fifteen sketches raises issues and questions designed to take readers deeper into a study of the Bible story itself. They can form the heart of a dynamic worship service, inspire a sermon, brighten a Bible study, or energize a personal walk in the word of God. Also included is "Everything You Need To Know About Easy Bible Drama," a chapter of "how-to's" for any church that wants to initiate the use of drama in worship. Any worship leader who has ever looked for thoughtful and inspiring Bible drama will profit from Worship Innovations: Easy Bible Drama by Janet Burton. Yes, the drama is easy, but it is also wonderfully creative. The stories are short and the settings simple, but still thought-provoking for both actors and audience.... Burton tells you how to recruit actors, schedule rehearsals, make costumes, and build settings.... These simple dramas will make your worship and praise deep for the heart, and inspiring for the mind. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If you want an intriguing resource that can help you bring a fresh, contemporary perspective to some of Jesus' most enduring stories, then Visualizing The Parables is just what you're looking for. Originally conceived as a Lenten series, this set of brief plays updates five familiar parables, placing them in a modern context that suggests new ways of understanding these familiar texts. Written in an easy, conversational style and easily adapted to your individual circumstances, these scenes are simple to produce and can be used in a variety of settings. In addition to worship services, they are also excellent for classroom use or as openers for church council or congregational meetings -- and they're a great way of involving your church members (especially youth) in programs or worship. Parables dramatized include: * The Ten Bridesmaids (Matthew 25:1-12) * The Prodigal Son (Luke 15:11-32) * The Good Samaritan (Luke 10:25-37) * The Rich Man (Mark 10:17-27) * The Great Banquet (Luke 14:16-24) Lynn Schlessman presents Jesus' words wrapped in packages that invite audiences to hear these parables in a new way, from an angle that feels accessible. The "punch lines" pack a wallop as they invite longtime Christians to "take another look" and encourage folks unfamiliar with the biblical words to get a glimpse of the absolute gift of God's love. Judy Hoshek Assistant to the Bishop, Northeast Ohio Synod Evangelical Lutheran Church in America Lynn Robert Schlessman is the senior pastor of Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church in Avon Lake, Ohio. He has previously served two congregations in North Dakota, and he is a graduate of Wartburg College and Wartburg Seminary.

Book Sunday Morning Readers Theater Cycle B

Download or read book Sunday Morning Readers Theater Cycle B written by Pamela Urfer and published by CSS Publishing. This book was released on 1994 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fresh look at scripture, a new presentation of the gospel, a deeper communication for God's truths -- this is what church drama has to offer. Sunday Morning Readers' Theater, B, offers nineteen skits for use during the church year. Each skit's performance falls between five and 10 minutes with the exception of readings for major church days. "What I hope to do is to help people see the gospels, Jesus and the other scripture passages with new vision, unclouded by familiarity," writes Pamela Urfer of these readings. This series provides one more form of worship designed to unfold the meaning of the lectionary readings, either as a replacement or a supplement to the sermon. The style varies from comic to tragic and the skits are set in both biblical and modern times. Readings include the Sundays of Advent and Lent, Christmas Eve/Day, Martin Luther King Sunday, Ash Wednesday, Holy Week selections, Pentecost Sunday, All Saints' Sunday, and Reformation Sunday. This is a three-book series. It closely follows the Revised Common, Lutheran, Episcopal, and Roman Catholic lectionaries. Pamela Urfer, Soquel, California, has written a number of plays for school and church productions. She has taught classes in church drama at Bethany Bible College and Mount Hermon Christian Conference Center. She holds a master of arts degree in literature from the University of California.

Book Cyber Worship in Multifaith Perspectives

Download or read book Cyber Worship in Multifaith Perspectives written by Mohamed Taher and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2006 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cyber Worship in Multifaith Perspectives, as is implied by its name, explores worship (i.e., Prayer, Praise, Scripture, Sacrament, Rituals, Confessions, Eucharist, Rites, Pilgrimages, Reflection, Contemplation, etc.) on the Internet. It is not an 'everything you need to know' guide about the subjects of faith and belief, religions-online, religions on the Net, or religions in cyberspace. Rather, it is a book about religious and spiritual experience under the rubric, cyber worship, which is the variety of ways religious devotion is performed and carried out on the Internet. The term 'Cyber Worship' is a catchall phrase, which includes variants such as online worship, virtual worship, electronic prayer, cyber puja, cyber synagogue, and so on. Dr. Mohamed Taher has thus assembled a quick reference for two groups: those communities that are involved in Cyber Worship and business Webs that collaborate in sustaining wired environments. As such, this book provides an interesting and current perspective on a practice that will continue to grow in the future.

Book Worship as Community Drama

Download or read book Worship as Community Drama written by Pierre Hegy and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2019-03-22 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Church weddings, funerals, and most Sunday services reflect the values and dramas of their communities, even when the ministers are the main or sole actors. This point is illustrated by examples ranging from American television masses to the Zairean three-hour services in the Congo. Of greatest interest to readers might be the Sunday services at ordinary parishes, which also range from friendly but uninspiring to innovative and inviting. There are also two exceptionally vital churches analyzed here: an evangelical church in the Pentecostal tradition and a social justice parish in the tradition of Martin Luther King Jr. Today one can hardly buy an item in a store or on the Internet without being asked for an evaluation, yet church services are seldom evaluated. There can be no improvement without evaluation. This book proposes a method of evaluation in eight steps that must be rigorously scientific and at the same time offer a vision for spiritual growth. The prophet Elijah found God in earthquakes and fire, but most people find mystery through art, music, rhythm, chanting, expressive readings, evocative rituals, and enlightened homilies. Today people expect “mystagogy” rather than routine performances. Mystagogy can be learned and improved through evaluation, to which this book desires to make a major contribution.
