Book excerpt: In a garden glade before a grand fountain, surrounded by a musical party, an elegant woman in a lustrous white gown dances as part of a foursome, raising her eyes to the viewer as if extending an invitation to the dance. This is the enticing scene in the J. Paul Getty Museum's painting "Dance before a Fountain" by Nicolas Lancret (1690-1743), an excellent example of the fete galante, a genre that was created and reached the peak of its popularity in France during the first half of the eighteenth century. This monograph seeks to familiarize American audiences with Lancret, a master of this genre, who was a revered painter in his own time, rivalling his contemporaries Antoine Watteau and Francois Boucher, and a favourite of crowned heads across Europe. Mary Tavener Holmes's engrossing text uses this painting as a springboard to reveal a remarkable amount about the painter, his mode of painting, Paris at the time this work was made, eighteenth-century dance, and the world of art patronage and collecting in France and elsewhere in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Lavishly illustrated with comparative paintings by artists such as Watteau, Boucher, Peter Paul Rubens, Jean-Francois De Troy, Jean-Baptiste Oudry, and Hubert Robert, this fascinating peek into a bygone Parisian era is a treat for the eyes and the intellect alike.

Book Neoclassical Theatre

  • Publisher : Greenwood
  • Release : 1988
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 248 pages

Download or read book Neoclassical Theatre written by Ronald W. Vince and published by Greenwood. This book was released on 1988 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Like Vince's two previous volumes in this series, Ancient and Medieval Theatre (1984), and Renaissance Theatre, Neoclassical Theatre provides a valuable resource for theoreticians and practioners. Choice This book provides an introduction to the information sources available to the neoclassical theatre historian and to some of the methods that have been used in the interpretation of those sources. Differences in the cultural context of the theatres in England, France, and Italy as well as in the historiography governing their interpretations are explored in depth. Unlike other books devoted to the history of eighteenth-century theatre, this work examines the materials and the processes of theatre history itself and is international in scope. Among the elements discussed are dramatic texts and promptbooks, public and legal records, playbills and account books, stage plans and scene designs, contemporary history and dramatic theory, biography and memoirs, and stage iconography and theatrical portraiture. The book also provides an evaluative sketch of some valuable reference works and, where possible, the reader is directed to a source where the original evidence is reproduced. The author concludes by examining some of the evidence for and implications of the internationalization of eighteenth-century theatre with suggestions for future study regarding the international geocultural dimension of the discipline.

Book The Painter s Touch

  • Author : Ewa Lajer-Burcharth
  • Publisher : Princeton University Press
  • Release : 2018-01-08
  • ISBN : 0691170126
  • Pages : 312 pages

Download or read book The Painter s Touch written by Ewa Lajer-Burcharth and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2018-01-08 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new interpretation of the development of artistic modernity in eighteenth-century France What can be gained from considering a painting not only as an image but also a material object? How does the painter’s own experience of the process of making matter for our understanding of both the painting and its maker? The Painter’s Touch addresses these questions to offer a radical reinterpretation of three paradigmatic French painters of the eighteenth century. In this beautifully illustrated book, Ewa Lajer-Burcharth provides close readings of the works of François Boucher, Jean-Siméon Chardin, and Jean-Honoré Fragonard, entirely recasting our understanding of these painters’ practice. Using the notion of touch, she examines the implications of their strategic investment in materiality and sheds light on the distinct contribution of painting to the culture of the Enlightenment. Lajer-Burcharth traces how the distinct logic of these painters’ work—the operation of surface in Boucher, the deep materiality of Chardin, and the dynamic morphological structure in Fragonard—contributed to the formation of artistic identity. Through the notion of touch, she repositions these painters in the artistic culture of their time, shifting attention from institutions such as the academy and the Salon to the realms of the market, the medium, and the body. Lajer-Burcharth analyzes Boucher’s commercial tact, Chardin’s interiorized craft, and Fragonard’s materialization of eros. Foregrounding the question of experience—that of the painters and of the people they represent—she shows how painting as a medium contributed to the Enlightenment’s discourse on the self in both its individual and social functions. By examining what paintings actually “say” in brushstrokes, texture, and paint, The Painter’s Touch transforms our understanding of the role of painting in the emergence of modernity and provides new readings of some of the most important and beloved works of art of the era.

Book Old Masters Picture Gallery Dresden

Download or read book Old Masters Picture Gallery Dresden written by Andreas Henning and published by Deutscher Kunstverlag. This book was released on 2007 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many of the exhibited works are among Europe's major paintings from the Renaissance to the end of the 18th century. The beginnings of the Gemäldegalerie can be traced back to the Saxon electors' Kunstkammer, founded in 1560. Through extensive purchases, August III was able to make it into a unique collection. The inventory of Italian Renaissance paintings is exceptional, including Raphal's "Sistine Madonna," Giorgione's "Sleeping Venus" and Titian's "The Tribute Money." Dutch and Flemish painting of the 17th century, by artists such as Rembrandt, Vermeer, Ruben and van Dyck, are another focus of the collection. Spanish, French and German paintings are also among the museum's art treasures.
