Book The Impressionist Print

Download or read book The Impressionist Print written by Michel Melot and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 1996-01-01 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A print can sometimes tell us more than a painting about the history of art. Michel Melot illustrates his thesis in this book, analysing relationships between artists, the art market, the critics, collectors and political institutions. This fresh approach reveals Impressionism not as a sort of miracle, but as a response to economic and social upheaval. This original view of a key movement in the history of art allows the reader to understand its decisive effect on all the subsequent generations who have contributed to maintaining the tradition of the belle epreuve.

Book Four French Symbolists

    Book Details:
  • Author : Russell T. Clement
  • Publisher : Greenwood
  • Release : 1996
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 608 pages

Download or read book Four French Symbolists written by Russell T. Clement and published by Greenwood. This book was released on 1996 with total page 608 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first comprehensive, scholarly sourcebook/research guide/bibliography on the major French Symbolists painters, this work includes nearly 3,000 entries covering a variety of materials. Each artist receives a primary and secondary bibliography with many annotated entries. Art works, personal names, and subject indexes facilitate easy access. The volume is designed for art historians, art students, museum and gallery curators, and others interested in this major art style of the last half of the 19th century and the first quarter of the 20th century. Art museums and art libraries in both the United States and abroad were gleaned for sources. This is a unique and substantial research tool. Symbolism is one of the most difficult art movements to define. Its primary meaning is the representation of things by symbols, by the imaginative suggestion of dreams and the subconscious through symbolic allusion and luxuriant decoration. The writings of Charles Baudelaire on the arts powerfully influenced the aesthetic theories of Symbolist artists and critics from 1860-1900, much as Baudelaire's poetics were the root of Symbolist literature. The Symbolist work, be it painting or poem, is above all personal and revelatory, precious not commonplace, reflecting and evoking a journey of the imagination. French Symbolist artists explored this style, attitude, and atmosphere from the 1880s to the early twentieth century. This sourcebook organizes biographical, historical, and critical information on four major French Symbolist artists: Pierre Puvis de Chavannes (1824-98), Gustave Moreau (1826-98), Odilon Redon (1840-1916), and Maurice Denis (1870-1943). The first three artists are recognized as originators of the movement. Denis is regarded as Symbolist's foremost theorist and profoundly religious practitioner. Although all four artists have been the focus of major retrospective exhibitions since 1990, no comprehensive sourcebook/bibliography exists.

Download or read book Edouard Vuillard written by Gloria Lynn Groom and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 1993-01-01 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Edouard Vuillard (1868-1940), one of the most admired post-impressionist artists, is best-known for his small easel paintings and their charming portrayals of everyday life. However, a major part of his work during his early life was the painting of large decorative panels in the Parisian homes of wealthy private patrons, produced between 1892 and 1912. These panels - some fifty in total - have been little studied, due principally to the inaccessibility of many of them and the impossibility of their being included in exhibitions.

Book The Impressionists and Their Legacy

Download or read book The Impressionists and Their Legacy written by Martha Kapos and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 744 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The documents in this book -- letters and recorded comments by the artists themselves, as well as selections by notable contemporaries including Baudelaire, Zola, Valery, Mallarme, Huysman, Laforgue and Proust -- show how artists and critics during and in the aftermath of Impressionism did describe themselves: how they responded to tradition, to each other and to the kaleidoscope of the contemporary scene. The ever-expanding interpretation of Impressionism and its legacy within the changing world of twentieth-century art and art criticism is examined through the writings of artists such as Leger, Kandinsky, Masson, Matisse, Bataille, Klee and Hofmann as well as recent critics, philosophers and art historians. Accompanying the texts are 235 color plates of Impressionist and Post-Impressionist masterpieces, and 242 black and white reproductions of historical photographs, original documents, contemporary cartoons, prints and drawings. - Jacket flap.

Book Toward Modern Art

    Book Details:
  • Author : Palazzo Grassi
  • Publisher : Rizzoli International Publications
  • Release : 2002
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 572 pages

Download or read book Toward Modern Art written by Palazzo Grassi and published by Rizzoli International Publications. This book was released on 2002 with total page 572 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This catalogue of the major exhibition at the Palazzo Grassi in Venice presents a groundbreaking interpretatioin of the birth of modern art. Serge Lemoine, curator of the exhibition and director of the Musee d'Orsay, proposes that "modern art does not descend, as is commonly thought, from Manet and Impressionism, but from . . . the French painter Pierre Puvis de Chavannes (1824-1898)." The author of monumental mural decorations in such civic buildings as the museums of Amiens, Lyons, Rouen, the Pantheon and the Sorbonne, Puvis de Chavannes had a remarkable influence on his contemporaries in France and abroad, including Seurat, Gauguin and Cezanne, as well as on later generations of artists. Equally indebted to Puvis de Chavannes are the great European symbolist painters, from Munch to Hodler. However, perhaps his most prestigious modern acolytes were Picasso and Matisse, who remained loyal to him all their lives. This volume features detailed scholarly contributions analyzing Puvis de Chavannes's work and all his affiliations, as well as offering rich critical and documentary data on his numerous and notable disciples. Accompanied by over five hundred illustrations, this volume is a superb evocation of a period of great artistic ferment and outstanding creativity. A landmark study, "Toward Modern Art" makes the bold argument that modern art does not descend, as is commonly described, from Manet and Impressionism, but rather from the unlikely figure of French painter Pierre Puvis de Chavannes (1824-1898). This gorgeously illustrated volume with over 500 full color illustrations, was organized by Serge Lemoine, director of Musee d'Orsay in Paris, and includes over 15 essays bydistinguished writers. Lemoine's side-by-side comparisons and expert commentary bear witness to his groundbreaking thesis.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Printmaking exploded with creative energy at the end of the nineteenth century in France. Artists such as Pierre Bonnard, Edouard Vuillard, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Paul Gauguin and Odilon Redon were at the forefront of the avant-garde movement to reinvigorate the applied arts through colour printmaking.Prints Abound probes the phenomenal outpouring of print publications in late nineteenth-century France. Exploring the artistic, technical, economic, commercial and cultural circumstances of 1890s Paris, Prints Abound reaches a fuller understanding of Art Nouveau, which emphasised the fusion of exquisite design with the everyday. The achievements of Bonnard are stressed and his work is represented in depth, with spirited posters, contributions to solo and collective portfolios, designs for music primers and illustrated books, and an outstanding four-panel folding screen of a fashionable street scene in fin-de-siècle Paris.Phillip Dennis Cate, Director of the Zimmerli Art Museum at Rutgers University, has written the introduction and a text on illustrated books; Richard Thomson, Chair of the Art History Department at the University of Edinburgh, discusses single-artist print albums; and Gale B. Murray, Chair of the Art History Department at Colorado College, considers music illustration.Prints Abound will be fascinating reading for print collectors and dealers, art historians and all those with an interest in this important period of French culture.

Book Harald Sohlberg

Download or read book Harald Sohlberg written by Marianne Yvenes and published by Hirmer Verlag GmbH. This book was released on 2018 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Majestic and magical landscapes, the soft beauty of fields of flowers, the raw cold of winter: the works of Harald Sohlberg combine a Romantic perception of nature with a contemporary pictorial language akin to Symbolism. This volume assembles some 60 paintings, in addition to a number of drawings, prints and photographs by the artist and grants insight into his conceptual world through his correspondence.0In particular the mountain world surrounding Rondane National Park provided Harald Sohlberg (1869?1935) with inexhaustible inspiration for countless studies and watercolours which were later incorporated into his landscape pictures. This volume places one of his most famous works, 'Winter Night in the Mountains', in a new context and casts light on less well-known aspects of Sohlberg?s oeuvre, which also includes street scenes, for example. One characteristic of his works that is particularly attractive is the lack of people in them - not least because their traces always appear present. This reveals a critical attitude to the modern age and at the same time allows the viewer to become immersed in his or her own stories.00Exhibition: National Gallery, Oslo, Norway (29.9.2018 - 13.1.2019) / Dulwich Picture Gallery, London, UK (13.2. - 2.6.2019) / Museum Wiesbaden, Germany (12.7. - 27.10.2019).
