Book Milton s Ovidian Eve

Download or read book Milton s Ovidian Eve written by Mandy Green and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-22 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Milton's Ovidian Eve presents a fresh and thorough exploration of the classical allusions central to understanding Paradise Lost and to understanding Eve, one of Milton's most complex characters. Mandy Green demonstrates how Milton appropriates narrative structures, verbal echoes, and literary strategies from the Metamorphoses to create a subtle and evolving portrait of Eve. Each chapter examines a different aspect of Eve's mythological figurations. Green traces Eve's development through multiple critical lenses, influenced by theological, ecocritical, and feminist readings. Her analysis is gracefully situated between existing Milton scholarship and close textual readings, and is supported by learned references to seventeenth-century writing about women, the allegorical tradition of Ovidian commentary, hexameral literature, theological contexts and biblical iconography. This detailed scholarly treatment of Eve simultaneously illuminates our understanding of the character, establishes Milton's reading of Ovid as central to his poetic success, and provides a candid synthesis and reconciliation of earlier interpretations.

Book excerpt: The title poem of The Three Faces of Christ (the book is mostly prose) explores Christ's vulnerability and divinity, his delight in us and care for us, his suffering on our behalf, and the comfort he draws from our love. These concepts, which are both moving and startling, are explored further in other pieces. We begin with the incarnation, the light of Christ coming into the world, move on to Christ's struggle to defeat darkness and restore Eden to us at great cost, and finally to rediscovering Eden for ourselves, as we explore who we truly are in God.

Book Exploring the Professional Identity of Management Consultants

Download or read book Exploring the Professional Identity of Management Consultants written by Anthony F. Buono and published by IAP. This book was released on 2013-03-01 with total page 391 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The volume is based on the presentations and discussions from the Fifth European Conference on Management Consulting sponsored by the Management Consulting Division of the Academy of Management, which took place June, 2011 at Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. The conference theme – Exploring the Professional Identity of Management Consultants – attempted to capture the highly ambiguous social status of this young and emerging profession. Management consulting does not have professional standards or accreditation criteria like those found in medicine or law, there are low barriers to entry, and a broad range of tasks are undertaken in the name of consulting. As a result, a crucial aspect of what constitutes such a loosely defined profession is the identity of its members. The professional identity of management consultants is continuously developing through the interplay of how consultants are seen and valued by clients as well as in the larger society, and how consultancy firms and consultants identify and position themselves. This theme includes a variety of topics, ranging from the interaction between consultants and their clients, consultant rhetoric and self-presentation, and the plethora of books, media and public discourse on consulting, to human resource policies and practices, knowledge development activities of consultancy firms, career and life stories of consultants and consultancies, and consulting associations, accreditation bodies, and education programs. All of these factors contribute, either directly or indirectly, to identity construction in the field of management consulting.

Book excerpt: You've never used a video guide like this before. You loved Chariots of Fire and you want to see something like it. Where do you start? Look up Chariots of Fire in the index, and find it in Drama. There you'll see it listed under White Flannel Films: Welcome to the glory days of the British empire when the ruling class rode horses on large country estates, servants were in plentiful supply, and only an adulterous lover questioned the status quo. As in other costume dramas, the period details are celebrations of all that was brilliant and luxurious, with the camera sweeping over British, Indian, or African countryscapes and exquisite turn-of-the-century interiors. But all this lush upholstery doesn't cover up the intelligent, thoughtful stories -- usually based on Lawrence, Forster, and Waugh novels -- played by stellar British actors. In White Flannel Films there are concise, witty reviews of select movies like A Room with a View A Passage to India Heat and Dust The Shooting Party Out of Africa White Mischief and more There is also a unique ratings system that helps you distinguish the bombs from the sleepers. But the key is that all these films offer the same kind of viewing experience -- if you like one, chances are good you'll like the others, too. Seen That, Now What? is your own personal video genius, who knows everything about movies and exactly what you like to watch.

Download or read book Joyce s Finnegans Wake written by John P. Anderson and published by Universal-Publishers. This book was released on 2014-09-01 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This tenth in a series concludes this ground-breaking word-by-word analysis of Finnegans Wake, the literary monument which records James Joyce's desperate search for spiritual connection. In the chapter covered by this volume, the main connecting links are reincarnation of ALP and reincarnation of the novel itself. For his last weave, Tikkun Master Joyce joins strands of Kabbalah and Hinduism to launch a fully realized ALP. She comes to roost but in a new home on the far shore. ALP realizes independence as she throws off fear of the church, of males, and of death. The pivotal event for this purpose is closure provided by the funeral for Father Michael, ALP's sexmailer. The resulting freedom gives her independence as well as what she already had, her instinctive charitable nature. Given the unity of FW, it will come as no surprise that with this final development ALP shares soul with three of Joyce's examples of godliness: Jesus, Buddha and highest art produced by humans. They all share the weave of independence and charity, Joyce's conditions for the sacred. And these conditions turn on light within. This chapter opens with the arrival of morning light within the Earwicker household and is anchored by a culminating debate between a dogmatic Catholic and a meditating Celt about reflected versus absorbed color [think absorbed light as light within]. Joyce chose light for this purpose because in a manner of speaking light is also a mixture of independence and charity. Independent of the observer and time and space, light shows charity at the subatomic level. Light being absorbed shares vibrational energy with and thus energizes sympathetic electrons of the absorbing material, becoming light within. By contrast, light reflected is not absorbed and does not energize. Energy wise it is wasted. Joyce presents ALP as having absorbed divine energy. She lights up from within with independent voltage. Reflecting her new realization, the final subject in ALP's stream of consciousness is herself in the present in the stream of life. With this focus ALP merges into the novel and they both reincarnate back to the beginning. The novel reincarnates by way of the joinder of the incomplete sentence fragment in the last line with the incomplete sentence fragment in the first line of Chapter 1. Together they make a whole. ALP's spirit reincarnates to a new birth mother so as to assist in Tikkun, which so far is incomplete. Her reincarnated soul is to light up from within as it is absorbed by a newly born infant. So as we finish this reading of FW, we uncover a mother lode of connections in Joyce's light: ALP merges into FW; ALP's soul reincarnates into another; the book joins its ending with its beginning in a reincarnation of rereading and new meanings; and a punning connection from Kabbala holds it all together. Connections: connections: connections.
